[Column] Crowfall: 5 Things that Crowfall's Countdown Could Reveal

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The number one term applied to the development of Crowfall so far seems to be the H-word. Yes, folks, the hype train has left the station and it has a long journey ahead of it, but that's part of the fun of being an MMO fan, right? Many of us enjoy the excitement that comes from seeing a new MMO peek its head up over the horizon, as we hope and pray that it will fill the hole in our heart that was left after the last dozen games promised us the world.

It's amazing that we all want something new and different that we hype things up that are mostly just a few sketches and ideas.

This will be another in a long list of niche games. Nothing really new imho. It's always good to wish though! :)

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Countdown to them buying an actual train to house the Crowfall team as there is that much hype.

All hopes for point 2, but prefer to be skeptical.

    I'm guessing 5 but....

It could be number 1 when I saw this from beginning of hunger week "We can allow the players to fundamentally change the world, without fear of the long term problems this might create."   It seems like this could mean it will be voxel.

The big reveal will be that they have signed Samuel Jackson to voice the God Valkyn.

I am so tired of Massive triple A corporations churning out mediocre ,appeal to the lowest common denominator, mmos.

I welcome any small company that wants to do a game for the niche gamer.

Even if it sucks, I am glad smaller studios and companies are just trying to do something creative and fresh. (or old school  =p  )

The way mmo's were: Community, Exploration, Character Development, Conquest.

The way mmo's are now : Cut-Scenes,Cut-Scenes, solo Questing, Cut-Scenes...

Why isn't closed testing in the list. Quite obvious.

I think when its finished counting down the game will be magically finished and we wont have to wait years for all this hype to explode into nothing hehe ;)

I'm banking on video reveal with a kickstarter.

I'm guessing it will be something vague, because they won't want to risk a hype-train wreck.

    Could Also Be:

A platform announcement >console>mobile or such.

A major talent, like #4 but not from the game industry, rather a well-known author/artist collaboration.  Like R.A. Salvatore did for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

I think #'s 5, 3, and 2 are so likely and would probably be one event - most of the time to kick off a crowd funding campaign you announce a tentative schedule for release and so conceptual or perhaps gameplay footage.

The only #1 type mechanic I could think of that would fit with a MOBA meets MMO style game would be the addition of RL tournaments with RL prizes.  It's not a ground breaking mechanic and one that would be expected of a MOBA but maybe not an MMO.

They have decided to make it a card game instead.
Are you onto something or just on something?

If its buy to play I will probably try it . I wont ever buy another subscription based mmo again until its been released for at least six months and is proven to be a decent game .

There's still quite a few archetypes left to be revealed; quite a few more than the number of business days left on the count down timer.

The thing that disappoints me is the server/world system as well as the various rulesets that go with them. I'm one that really needs a persistent world in my MMO (and one that doesn't involve harsh death penalties). Too bad.

I do wish we could see less of these niche PvP MMO's and more quality games for larger audiences. I love PvP in both the open world and BGs, but not this harsh niche stuff. I also like PvE and everything about MMO's. But so many games lately have been trying to go with one very specific idea or another and I'm just not loving any of them. Even the supposed "big releases" like ESO - I'm not into the ES franchise and everything that goes with it - the dark, gloomy world, lack of nameplates, only WvW PvP and not standard OwPvP or BGs (although the PvE seems fine), etc. So that game was a no for me. Wildstar was so much no for me even in beta in so many ways. I don't need a game to revolutionize the genre, I just need something to be well done without trying so hard to be freaking special.

    Hmm....

My guess is that Artcraft has quietly acquired the assets from Project Copernicus and that Beta and Release is closer than we think.

edit: I definitely see some similarities in the art style.

Wait ! You need a special magic key to unlock that chest !

Visit the Cash Shop now and buy your magic key. Then quickly check to see if YOUR key will be the lucky one that opens this mysterious treasure. The enchantment on your key may not be strong enough though, but don't despair, there's plenty more keys to be had !

Gameplay video.  I need to see nothing else to make up my mind.  Not some cinematic(although they are nice near launch), not some carefully crafted video of some gameplay, but actual tried and true full sound and graphics gameplay with no voiceovers from annoying developers telling me what's happening on screen.  GW2 did it a few years ago at Gamescom, that's what I want from now on from ANY new game.
