Hi all, I need a bit of help looking for a new mmorpg to buy.
I have been playing Ultima Online for huge ammount of time, and for me it is probably the best game ever. What I love from it is the huge ammount of different things you can do. It is a never ending lovely experience.
But UO is quite old fashioned from the graphics point of view, so I decided to move to a new game.
I have tried world of warcraft up to lvl 60, but I did not like it at all. It has nice graphics (that's true), but it is so simple compared to UO that it became boring to me. You spend most of the time moving from one point to another to make a new quest wich is always the same, killing mobs once and again. So I am unsubscribing it to stop wasting money and I am looking for a real online Roll game.
I have been looking other games web pages, but the information i found about professions and so, is really simple in most of the cases.
So, The question is:
Does anybody know a game as good and COMPLETE as Ultima Online but with a modern engine (graphics, and so) ?
thanks a lot for the help

first, i hope you ment role, not roll :P
second, depends if you mean comeplete as in "polished game" or complete as in "its got everything you could want to do"
but to be quite honest, i dont know, i couldnt get into UO myself, tried twice, about 3 years appart, mebies it was the people i was with, or perhaps it just could imerse myself into the graphics (if my memory serves me, its an isometric viewing system, a little grany like diabo's), but it did seem fun, just not for me.
I can't really suggesting anything without fear of being abused on moral grounds to say such things, but for divercity in your gaming experience, SWG can offer it, with the right guild and right people, but its far from being a polished product... lol. but other than UO, i dont really know of any other games that let you build your own city almost anywere in the game world you want.
personaly im curently playing EQ2, SWG (yeh two sony games, i sold my soul to the devel there didn't I) and trying desporatly to get into Ryzom. as you didnt like WoW, you probably wont like EQ2, but quite similar really, more down to preferance, EQ2 is just a bit more serious, and from what i hear, slower to play, but i aint put more than about 3 hours into bouncy castle land, as i just couldnt accept the graphics, not my style by far. so mebies you could do what im doing, and try ryzom out, i've heard good things, and there are no contenders comming out in the next few months, so wahts to loose?
The total amount of content in EverQuest vastly dwarfs even Ultima Online, although character development is far more linear than UO is. If you have the time to devote to the high-end, endgame raiding content you will find no other game as complete as EverQuest.
yes I meant role ) (sorry for it)
About "complete" I mean "its got everything you could want to do"
and thanks for your info. I will try Ryzom.
I have seen some interesting info about Roma victor and it looks to be pretty complete. It's a pity it's not fantasy oriented.
Ultima Online is the greatest MMORPG you will ever play. However, it's dead now. I highly suggest you wait for the next Ultima Online endeavor or play World of Warcraft (Lots of content, just not as much as UO).
Also, I tried Everquest 1 and 2 (I actually discovered they were alot better than I expected), and both werent nearly as good as Ultima Online.
Oh, and by Ultima Online endeavor I don't mean the next expansion pack. I mean, the next game they are releasing such as Ultima Online 2 or Ultima X: Odyssey. Maybe they will make it 3d and keep it.
UO > EQ > WOW > Guildwars > etc etc
in terms of content/gameplay. UO might be dying (has been for over what, 4-5 years now?) but thats not because the game doesnt have content and awsome gameplay - its because of EA's lack of vision for UO, and the outdated client.
*edit* as you can see form my xfire, the only game that ever came remotely close to uos gameplay/freedom is SWG
oh, and you will find a very long, heated rivalry between EQ-type players and UO-type players
Yes, UO:X Odyssey was canned along with UO2. However, it doesnt mean they wont try another attempt at a 3d UO.
I haven't played UO so remember that but I have read these boards a lot and I think you should check out Anarchy Online, Saga of Ryzom or maybe Eve-online. Sorry I don't really have time to go into much detail about these games but hopefully i can give you a place to start looking.
Anarchy online is sort of half level- half skill based pretty big game lots of items and and moderate chances for individuality, futuristic sci-fi world. I dont know if you can call this complete because there are still some bugs in the game from launch which is kind of sad.
Saga of Ryzom is also a futuristic scifi world but kind of it's own fantasy world in a way, hard to explain but it has a 100 percent skill based system and you can develop your character however you want to. I dont know if you can call this game complete cause they are still missing sound in a lot of places.
Eve online is ships in space if you can go for that and it has a skill based system.
Thats a big call... Id like to see some substantiation
I played UO for 6 years and EQ1 for just over 2 years. I got sick of EQ1 a LOT faster than UO because I found it had significantly LESS overall content.

Depends heavily on when you played EQ, and if you were engaged in raiding content. Please remember, my advise was hinged on whether there was time to devote to raiding. Without raiding there is about 45-65% of the game's content more or less unavailable.
When you consider the non-linear character development and crafting in UO, and make a side-by-side comparison to EQ you will fall heavily in favor of UO. But for raw content, meaning significant encounters in static dungeons, EQ takes the cake easily.
ive played EQ1 most of my life but a bit of UO here and there. i owuld say it is a great game and such but i like EQ better and soon once i get my computer fixed up after burning out my chipset ima get EQ2. but currently i suggest SWG o-o i know alot of people hate it but the game is very deep the only thing i dont like is the fact you only have a certain amount of skill points as you can only master like 2 professions if your going the force tree.
I specifically mean EQ1. "Too late to join" is incredibly relative to whether or not you can find a guild to raid with. If you cannot raid, EQ1 may simply be too intimidating an environment for a newbie. But if you can devote the time to raid (we're talking 4+ hours per day) then it's not at all hard to get inline with the game.
Well thats a point ...
I played EQ1 from release so I must agree it was pretty sparse for the first 12 - 18 months
I guess Im thinking more of the play style options, where EQ is based very heavily around combat, UO had a multitude of other things to do that always made it seem "bigger" than it really was.
I think I may have left the Rose coloured glasses on too long

i miss ultima online.
Im sorry but the only reason EQ got the subscription totals it got was because it came out after UO, and with 3d graphics.
people looked at EQ, then looked at UO's graphics, and bought EQ. People always choose graphics over content - kinda the way it is now still *cough* points to GW/WoW *cough*
Heck im guilty of that too - playing swg instead of UO - im sorry but we all need shiny graphics at some point
Someone find the new UO please :P with this new Expansion comming out Uo will die
Hello Ferthala and welcome to MMORPG.com!
The game you are looking for is Star Wars Galaxies. It is unofficially UO2. Every single game DEV who worked on UO, worked on SWG. (Except for Lord British who went somewhere else. Nowadays he is working on his own MMORPG.... which will not be out anytime soon.)
The lead game DEV of UO was Designer Dragon, he became the lead game DEV of SWG, and is now known as Holocron on the SWG forums. SWG also has a modern game engine. One UO game DEV left UO, worked on SWG, then went back to UO LOLOL!!

Gunz the Duel is my bet..Damn, this game is really awesome!!! For sure everybody will like and love this game so much..Lots of fun!!
Well,
UX:O was a game I was looking forward with great hopes. SWG post CU is even worser then SWG prior CU. They may have hire the devs from UX:O, but they look chained and unable to let their great creativity to work.
EQ was great, and it was improving with every expension up to LDoN(with the exception of Velious, but that exception is clearly what lead to SoE and Vanguard rather then Verant and peoples will be feeling quite strong emotions toward this, so I will leave it there, just after my opinion as a fan). After LDoN, EQ become definitely geared, focused, determined, to enhance raiding, after many hesitations(yes, it was always geared toward raiding, but they where honestly hesitating toward group uberness concepts, which is prolly what make me stay so long, pretty hard to clearly explain why I was there despite been a raid hater). If you dont want to RAID and have this as the center of your gaming experience, any other MMORPG will be a better choice.
EQ2 from start tell you that if you dont belong to a guild, you are trash and should recycle into a guild or exist as trash. Communities lovers should stick there, we will all be happier, they in EQ2, me anywhere else.
CoH is the best combat mechanic for groups lovers and is as good a MMORPG can be toward soloers(comparing to existing MMORPGs, not to what a good MMORPG should offer to soloers). It is to fast IMO. Customisation is GREAT! IMO Hamidon is an awfull mistake and hopefully they will change that mistake to make the game more appealing and logical to groupers and soloers.
WoW, read EQ, place yourself at the Kunark era. Twist the game so it become ''noob friendly'', reduce content, tediousness & grind. Add a somewhat nice PvP system(arguable) and decent gaphics made by artists rather then by polygones count. Someone that have a blast in WoW and want to do MORE should consider EQ or EQ2 as long as it was not the PvP that was interesting them. Look toward DAoC if you really like the PvP.
DAoC is to a MMORPGs in general a different(PvP) flavor of what existing EQ was. So if EQ is icecream to you, DAoC is still icecream, but different flavor. Not for me, but definitely bring a few nice concepts.

I want to thank you all for the help and feedback.
I have finally dedided to go for GW wich seems to be a nice option.
thanks again!!!
You can find a lot of the features that made UO such a great game in the upcoming Roma Victor, take a look at the trade skills and features list and I think you'll be very impressed if UO was your greatest mmorpg!

UO Experience, Beta till...well today since I still play freeshards.
EQ Experience, Beta then 5 years, most of which spent in the top tier guilds raiding the end content of every expansion through LDoN.
From a PVE perspective EQ has far more content for the group mentality. If you are looking for PVE and lots to do with guilds as far as PVE Raid encounters, yes EQ has the most content in this area.
However if you are like me and View UO as the complete package that it is, Non linear character progression, Crafting, Unrestricted PVP, Character customization, Player housing, Playwer mount diversity, The ability to Harvest crafting materials out of things that make sense..ala I mine for ore not Slay 5,000 vampires. Then UO has and Continues to have vastly more overall content then any game on the current market.
Check out project entropia , it has unlimited things to do , coloniztion of the planet calypso far far way,
the game has improved a lot , and it has a real economy so u can get back your money into real
