If you want to return, now the time. They have a 'Return to Vana'diel' thing going on for those who let their accounts lapse. I just retrieved two of my three accounts, both of which had been dead for over a year. All you need is your playonline ID, your password, and registation codes. If you don't have the codes, I don't really know what you can do. I lost my codes for my third character, and thats the reason he's still in limbo.
If you lost your POL id as long as you know the billing info you can always retreive it.

New player here...will get my copy in the mail tomorrow. Ive been looking around some FFXI forums and there seem to be new players joining all the time.
I just started up my account again during the 1st "Return To Vana'Diel Campaign" and can point out a few things for people to realize before they start their accounts up again or for the first time, but before I do let me say for the most part the game is still one of the best on the market right now;
1.) Inflamation of prices; Before I left about a little over a year ago, prices were decent and AH was the best place to buy things, as of now that is not the case (on MOST servers). As for instance, I have played on the Alexander, Midgardsormr, Shiva, Ifrit, and am recently playing the Bahamut server. Now since there are a lot of different types of people that play these games let me narrow down the servers to what I KNOW form personal experience.
Alexander: My original and favorite server thus far; Many nice people that are willing to help out new players, BUT prices are the worst on this server from what I have compared prices on servers through.
Midgardsormr: I personally thought this was the most useless server; Not very many friendly people let alone talkitive, and if they are they act like dumbasses 90% of the time. Prices are RIDICULOUS, and it just seems that whenever I'm on my character on this server that I lag all to hell.
Shiva: This is a VERY good server to start off on since there are a lot of friendly people, and prices are average, as they were when I left. Only bad thing is that most people that I know don't stay on this server due to bad parties and not that many high levels to party with after 50cap.
Ifrit: Good old Ifrit; If your in the mood to talk shit and have some good stupid humorous times, this is the BEST server for this. I go on this server usually when I tend to drink a bit and am in the mood to yell at people. Prices aren't that great as well.
Bahamut: Server I play on the most; First of all, the comparison to how many people play as a melee or mage is simple (Melee < Mage) which can be good in certain aspects.
1.) If you're going for a Melee Profession to max or start off with it will be more easily done since once you hit Lv11, you can lvl at dunes, than Qufim @ 22 and have a very good chance on finding a party with a lot of WHM, RDM, and/or BLM. Down side is Melee armor can tend to be a bit inflamed.
2.) If you're going to be a mage, prices for items are going to be nice until you hit your lvl 25 armor, than it's going to be hell from there. As I have said there are a lot of mages on Bahamut server and it tends to be very tedious to find a party in the earlier levels.
All in all, Bahamut out of all the servers I have played on is my favorite, even though the prices seem to be moderatly inflamed on it.
I know this was a discussion about if people will start again once *360 comes out, and my answer to this is simple, not as many as we hope. Granted there will be a dramatic increase in numbers once it is officially released, but a few months down the road we should only have an 8-15% increase maximum on population.
This has been Grim's 2 cents.

FFXI is to harsh and unforgiving and not newbie friendly at all.
the ecomony is shot, deleveling sucks and the downtime(to regen hp/mp) is horrible unless you are rich.
Final Fantasy XI had beautiful graphics and coloring. I think it tops Everquest 2. The theme was great in it.
wen all the xbox people come on the ps2ers and computer people gonna be pissed off
its gonna be a shit load of noobs.......as if valkurm wasnt crowded enough
jus be ready to deal with high ass prices for the items
be ready to get flamed by many people.......
