Massive updates?

I'll admit it's been about 6+ months since I've played this game but when I update it, the patches and downloads are MASSIVE! I've had this game update for over an hour with barely a crack in the overall download. The thing is, it is doing something. I don't have slow DL speeds, I have lot's of RAM and I see it updating. It's almost as if the entire game is being downloaded again. This is actually the second time I've noticed this with Marvel Heroes. If I don't play it for a few months, updating the game takes hours, I'm talking 2+ hours.
What is going on here? Anyone else experience this? No other game comes remotely close to needing this much time to update, let alone install.

I run it through Steam, and Steam keeps it patched automatically while I'm at work/asleep, I got really sick of the basic launcher needing manual updates every other week
