General: Harry Potter Themed Wizarding World Online Announced

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Nearly two years ago, we reported that a Harry Potter MMO was in the works. According to a new report from Bio-hazard Entertainment, Wizarding World Online will indeed become a reality. A team of over thirty has been working on the earliest systems to get things lined up to meet today's start of a Kickstarter initiative.

Bio-Hazard's modest goal for the initial round of funding is $100,000 and will get things underway.

Wizarding World Online takes players to Hogwarts between the first and second Wizarding Wars with iconic locations included from the J.K. Rowling novels. The story is set when Harry Potter is only two years old and will be expanded through the questing system. In addition, player factions will face off in PvP Quidditch matches.

  • Join the Hogwarts House that fits you best

  • Put yourself in Hogwarts with a robust character-creation system

  • Discover a new approach to MMORPG play made for all-wizard parties

  • Chat and trade in your House’s Common Room and the magical bazaar that is Diagon Alley

  • Decorate your private room with Chocolate Frog Cards, posters, chests, flags, crafting tables, and more!

  • Learn more than 200 spells in the classrooms and halls of Hogwarts

  • Join a party for daily and epic quests  to explore the Forbidden Forest, Azkaban and other perilous places

  • Face off against other players at the Hogwarts Dueling Club and the Hogwarts Quidditch Pitch

  • Discover iconic creatures from the monster compendium as well as plenty more to categorize

  • Learn crafting disciplines such as Herbology and Broomology to bring galleons into your personal Gringotts Bank vault

Interested? You can learn much, much more on the Wizarding World Online KickStarter page.

The inevitably inevitable inevitability is happening :)

Do not promote this unholy abomination. J.K. Rowling did enough damage to it in the later books. I don't need a corporate business to get their greedy hands on it and fuck it up even worse like the Star Wars franchise.

We have LOTRO why not Harry Potter?  Surprised this hasn't happened earlier.  New generation of kids and maybe Harry Potter will resonate more than hobbits and elves.

Why do I get the impression that your HP books are in a climate controlled display cabinet?

I'm curious. I would love to play a well done Harry Potter MMO. Will have to wait and see how it develops.

This sounds very interesting. But 100K is very small amount to build such a intricate world.

    Best of luck to them.

    Are you fucking kidding me?

JK Rowling is worth A BILLION DOLLARS!

Let her finance her own shit.

Sorry but this this is complete BS. The fuck is this trend nowadays where game companies feel they should put their hands directly into our pockets first.

You're under the presumption J.K. Rowling wants anything to do with this. At best, they just broke a deal with her and her lawyers asking for permission to use the IP for their game in exchange for paying Rowling some royalties. This doesn't mean Rowling would ever give them money for the game.

To her, it's a possible source of extra source of income which requires absolutely no investment from her. And if it happens to be doing well, all she has to do is give 1 public endorsement about it and boom, instant awareness of hundreds of thousands, even millions of people will know about it. But as far as financial investment? Why would she?

The last time this company was in the news research showed they were a very inexperienced studio with little chance of pulling this off.   The chances of them getting a playable game out there are extremely slim.

This looks like one big scam.

    I realize that.

She obviously must have sold the rights to this company and made even more off it. What I'm saying is, if this company is going to ask for the dollars of fans, why aren't they turning to a real publisher or the well-fortuned author first?

just for the record, even tho i don't like mr potter at all... a creator has FULL controll over his/her creation.

That live action bit was sooooo bad.

Before watching the video I was expecting an isometric dungeon crawler type game the way the bullet points read out.

You never know it just might be good in the end... If they listen to the fans and keep to the HP lore they might have a fun game here, but it's way to early to even begin to speculate about the final product.

Actually a creator doesn't always have full control over his/her work. It depends on the deals that the creators made.

One might think J.K. Rowling has full control because her work became immensely popular but again, I don't think anyone knows what deals were made and what she can say no to. Or yes to.

As far as the statement above about her ruining her later books ... well, they were her books to ruin. It was her creation. She may or may not have made amazing decisions but they were hers to make and good on her for doing so.

Another kickstarter game you can just throw your money away on. I would caution anyone not to do it. Just the first 2 minutes of that film they made was so bad they could only make the game just as bad. :-)

Sounds like a roundabout way of saying, "we don't have the rights to do this."

That just not possible. You can't make use of copyrighted material (for commercial purposes or otherwise) without explicit permission/ agreement from the owner. Otherwise lawyers would be up the wazoo on this.

I've seen nothing to indicate she was heavily persuaded to make Dumbledore gay.

I have seen articles where she thought the Hermione/Ron relationship was a mistake.
