I Haven't found another topic covering the latestgame reviews on this site, so I just start one.
So lets talk about the GW review (but the following applies to the WoW review and reviews in general as well)
It's obvious that the author really made a lot of effort to draw a very detailed picture of this game. But what really annoys me is the way marks are given for the different categories.
As I understand it on a scale from 1 to 10 "10" means something like flawless, perfect, outstanding. 1 should therefore mean "sub standard, really bad". As consequence a "5" would mean average, solid.
If we agree on this, the marks given in this review are in part very questionable. Sound for example. He says himself that the sound is solid, at best - nothing special at all. So why "8"? And honestly - the Community - if we can even call it so - is defenitly NOT above average.
This leads us to the question how to define "average". I have played a couple of games (Ryzom, EQ2, WoW, DAoC, SWG) and can only compare GW to those. These are big titles and I think they are a good scale to measure other games.
And using this scale GW wouldnt get a community rating above 5 and no soundrating > 5 as well.
I am not talking about personal "taste" here, just about (more or less) plain facts and the attempt to find a way to use ratings in a reasonable way.
So, what is your opinion? Are the games on this site overrated in terms of a wrong usage of "marks"?

Games review here are...''INTERESTING''.
They are the opinion of 1 person. However, be carefull, if 1 member of the staff have similar tastes to you, it dont mean that all the staff does.
The scores of the mass hardly mean anything, but either the current flows, or which company have more bot account on this site.
On the forums you will find the opinions and reviews of many differents folks, you prolly can find folks of every tastes around here(or lack of tastes *tease Fadeus*).
For the MMORPG world, this site is prolly the equivalent of a bar in Star Wars. Is the site pro-Rebels or pro-Imperial? Well, the Imperial will tell you we are scums and not to be trusted. The Rebels will tell you to carry your guns!

I come here for the game list, the reviews on this site are by far the most immature and lack description as to why the user gave such a high/low score rate for so and so.

However, with immaturity you get a direct link to the emotions of the peoples. A value you have hard troubles to see in some others places.
I am a highschool teacher and I find awesome the site where students rate their teachers anyway they feel, behind anonymous names. Immature maybe, but also a big part of reality and truth that some peoples may not always dare to say openly. If a teacher stink because he dont wash properly, on such a site it is clear and brutal, exactly like the noises who first meet the say teacher. And when I read the official answer from school boards or teachers toward those sites, I laugh, a good time. They are just admitting the site NEED to be there to scream some real stuff that you wont see or hear otherwise. Of course lies or ''biaised'' perceptions are rampants, but it is easy to find for yourself once someone raise an ''interesting'' point and make your own mind.
Do you have to take those ranking for cash? Hehe, I certainly hope nobody does, but it is well worth a check, and even an incomplete review show you something. Someone took the time to write this, no matter how badly.
This site own every other site IMO as far as you want ''real details'' on reviews, they are just crude and need you to dig...and you get every possible side toward any point on this site.
The staff could do more hardwork to detail serious reviews, someone is never perfect anyway. But even if they dont, what they do here, and allow, is worth gold!
Again, I want to congratulate the staff of this site who allow and maintain such great information, it would help if they would commit more on reviews themselves and have better tools and details, but they are doing the best they can and certainly better then I would myself, great job!

I'd guess 'community' isn't just whether there are kids and idiots around (since every game has those), I imagine it also refers to guild arrangements, how easy it is to find a party etc. The Euro servers experience a lot less 'problems' than the US ones from what i've seen, you still get idiots but in general people are a lot less abusive. The fact that you can just switch of local, trade and emote chat and just have your guild chat probably helps it's score.
The sound is ok, for me ok is 7-8 and above average. Fantasy game music is not my thing, it doesn't mean that the orchestral music isn't good just that i prefer to listen to iTunes. The sound effects are pretty good, i think i gave it either 7 or 8.
I think it's an excellent review, gets across the postives and negatives of GW quite well rather than some of the player reviews (omg, i can't jump! why are there no mounts!! omg lvl 20 cap suks!!!). Clever way to defuse the GW vs WoW threads as well by giving them the same score...

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...
This is an interesting topic. Unfortunately it's a masquerade for an attack on the rating of GuildWars. More's the pity.
I forced myself to make it through most of the game so I would see. I wouldn't called my opinion rude or an attack as I don't hate the game, I just really don't think it deserves an 8.7.
Please note that I'm simply complaining about the disparity between the promise of the topic's title and the content of its actual direction. I'd love an objective discussion about reviews and their merits without focusing on a single game.
the MMORPG review gave it an 8.1, less than Eve, DAoC, CoH and AO, same as WoW.

Actually that was my intention when i started this topic. But I think to discuss something you need some point to start at and that review of guild wars is that point i decided to use. Not only because some of the marks given in this review simply make no sense to me but also because it is the latest review on this site which ensures that many people who join this discussion have read it recently.
I just want to remind the community and especially the authors of the reviews what the marks they are giving exactly mean and why - in my opinion - some are not really justified. It has become a tendency on MMORPG.com to hype games more and more leading to ratings which no longer reflect the true quality of a game.
But that again is something we could discuss maybe someone can convience me that i am wrong
