What Game Should I Back Now? If Anything?

TheStryderHDTheStryderHD Member UncommonPosts: 41

So I am just watching the State of The Game Video on Camelot Unchained and it looks promising, the problem is there are a lot  of games that look "promising" including my much anticipated favorite franchise of the past "Everquest" with "EQN", even with the recent buyout by Daybreak Studios. So what game should I back now? Crowfall looks interesting, Camelot Unchained, Star Citizen,  Skyforge, Pathfinder Online, Shards.. I don't know which one to really back? I love open-world, persistent, old-school raiding and a great community. Give me your opinions on that because I'd love to hear what you guys have backed and why!

Also, what's out there now to Alpha test or back and get access to some new testing? I have been Alpha Testing Gloria Victis and been thinking about "The Repopulation" and been playing H1Z1, but the whole zombie thing is running kind of dry for me, pretty much done with that, I am an old school sword and board type guy, but Sci-Fi is intriguing too.

So what do you guys think? Thanks in advance!

Sorry, I'm trying to be serious here, there's a lot out there.

I just backed Crowfall, because I enjoyed seeing some of the names on the project. For a similar reason, I also backed Shroud of the Avatar - Richard Garriot to me is a person who really came with the whole idea of playing RPGs in large groups of people. Me backing is saying "thank you" for the games he made in the past.

The one game that I am really looking forward to though, is Star Citizen. I am not sure people realise this, but Star Citizen has some of the most in-depth systems that were ever developed. They are simulating each spaceship down to the electric circuits and heat pipes. If there is a game that is going to push the limit a couple of levels further, it will be Star Citizen. The downside of the level of fidelity is that is will take a couple of years to develop (but I suppose that is true about every early pledge game).

Sounds interesting, and yeah you are basically backing up their past work before a new game is released or even mostly finished at the time, most likely anyway. I mean I never really played Ultima Online, but some of my friends rave about it. I was always a big EQ guy, even played EQOA on the PS2 system and loved it. I was thinking of buying SotA through Steam but it's $45 right now and they say it's not worth it at the time being, also was looking at The Repopulation too but not sure about that one yet.

Coming from a background of really enjoying games like Age of Conan, EQ, and more recent ones like Guild Wars, and SWToR, I'd imagine I'd like Camelot Unchained, EQN, SoTA and stuff like that more. It's hard to pick, and I don't just have money to throw at multiple companies.

Well there's no need to spend the money right now. A lot of these "promising" games are still being made, it might be better to just wait.

Let the early adopters pay for it, and then if it's good, you can join in. If it's bad (which has historically been the case), then you just saved money and whatever emotional investment you may have put in. I mean look at some of these people who are already madly in love with what amounts to feature lists. They're so sure and so certain that they're making the right choice that they have emotionally and mentally back the project as well - otherwise it means they just threw away their money.

We won't know until these games are out of beta and released. I can only say, if you just look at the numbers, there haven't been many great games released in the last 5-10 years. You might have a few good ones out there, but how many have fallen flat? If you're going to gamble, you might be better off going to Vegas and dropping that money on a blackjack table or something. Probably have better odds.

I'd like to recommend backing already released games that more or less do what you want.
  • TheStryderHDTheStryderHD Member UncommonPosts: 41

Yeah, honestly, I've backed enough games in early to mid-Alpha and been pretty upset with results in a bunch of cases. So I'd say maybe I'll wait for an Open-Beta or something like that to try the game(s) out.

    Thanks!

KickStarter is the fake it until you can make project website.

Only game I have considered kick starting is Pantheon as it is trying to bring back the magic of EQ1 with modern systems and graphics. The lead developer is what stopped me from dropping $200 bucks this weeks to get access to beta for my wife and I. Long and short he spent developer money on weekend habits. Skyforge has a good founders pack for look like a very fun game and best part is if you do, you can start playing March 11th.

I read a report that only 30% of crowd funded games get released, what % of them are good? I am loving Banner Saga but thats the only KS game I like so far. No KS MMO has launched yet so we dont know the % factor on them releasing yet. Thats gona take a few years to figure out. Just remember if you KS something, you have to look at it like throwing away money that has a slim chance of paying out. Even if the game releases dose not mean you will like it.

Why do you HAVE to back anything?
  • ThwaiteThwaite Member UncommonPosts: 83
So far I have backed Skyforge, Star Citizen, and Eternal Crusade. No regrets with any of them, yet.... I am fairly disheartened Miguel is no longer on the EC team because he was a huge life force behind the game and PR. Oh well, it happens in this industry quite often enough. I am looking forward to Skyforge the most however!
  • TheStryderHDTheStryderHD Member UncommonPosts: 41

Yeah, Pantheon also is another one I was looking at because I was a huge EQ player. A lot of choices, but yeah, gonna probably wait for some Open Betas.

And to respond to the dude saying, why do you have to back anything? I DON'T lol, and I wanted to see what people thought, which is why this post even exists lol

  • TheStryderHDTheStryderHD Member UncommonPosts: 41
There's a lot of good ones coming out, Warhammer 40K: Eternal Crusade looks fun too, does anyone know when some of these games will have some actual game testing from backers or pre-orders or anything?
  • NomadMorlockNomadMorlock Member UncommonPosts: 815

My recommendation would be Star Citizen.  I wish I could say I was basing this on the type of game and features you want in a game (which ultimately should be the deciding factor), but i'm not in this case.

I'm basing this on proving that the concept of crowd funding a game which you want to see made is very viable and that the game can be just as much (or more) AAA than one made by a big publisher.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very much looking forward to playing Star Citizen.  I also support the project and the community because I believe that this may be the only way to push the bounds of what has been done before.  Not only has the development been more transparent than any game prior, but it is setting the standards for how a game can be shaped by it's future player base and not by corporate risk.

I do believe that Star Citizen is exceptional not only because of the game and features which are in development, but because of what it can teach the industry.  You're welcome to join us and be a part of it.

I have backed a few games already, and everyone of them has let me down. I now swear never to back a game again. I miss the days of being accepted into Alphas and Beta because the company liked your application not because you spent $150 to get into early alpha and to get a few bonus items.
  • TheStryderHDTheStryderHD Member UncommonPosts: 41

Star Citizen seems to be the best choice overrall, but not the best choice for me pretty much. Not my typical MMORPG type of game, and not a fan of EVE.

What's coming out soonest, and/or playable testing now or soon?

  • ZombieCatZombieCat Member UncommonPosts: 55

I cant say what or why you should back anything but for me it is because I believe in what a certain game is trying to do. Have I been burned? On yeah. Do I regret it? No. I want to help support those companies that are trying to bring about games I actually want to play even when it doesn't work out.

For me I never back more than $100 bucks (mostly $30 - $60) so if something goes bust, I lost a night out having pints with some friends. If you do not have a lot of disposable income, do NOT back anything just wait for it to hit open beta.

  • TheStryderHDTheStryderHD Member UncommonPosts: 41

Yeah, thanks for that Zombie, I don't put a lot into early backing, especially not anymore.

Does anyone know anything, like I said, about which of these new games is having early testing right now and playable? Other betas coming out soon or game releases?

I like the "vision" of Pantheon.  Then again, I liked Brad's vision for Vanguard as well.  I can't bring myself to financially support someone who has demonstrated that they are not able to deliver when fully funded.

  • TheStryderHDTheStryderHD Member UncommonPosts: 41

You can say that about all of these games on Kickstarter, they are all "Visions".

You are really just going off of their work they have completed in the past, the creators and really liking their past work, and hopefully this new product will be good, based on some details about it.
