The Dark Tower series perhaps.  Clive Barker. Greg Bear' or Peter Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy.

None of the above, and indeed no book series or movie at all.

    Why?

Because the developer has to pay a license fee for the IP and the copyright owner gets a degree of control over the design of the game to protect their intellectual rights.  Both compromise the production of the game to an unacceptable degree.

I concur.  Still waiting for the "next" one to come along, some good ones out there but none quite as deep and rich as Wheel of Time.

    Yes. Yes. Yes.

Just started reading these books again a few weeks ago while on vacation in the Caribbean; cannot stop wishing Peter Jackson would take a peek and consider making some more movies in the vein of Tolkien.

Legend of the Seeker was a passably decent TV show. Look it up. :)

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Stormlight Archive. It's a masterpiece.

Not a bad choice but defently not the best fantasy book since Tolkien. He lost his way towards the end, perhaps his illness played a big part. Anyway I would say Raymond E Feist vast world's and races would be the number choice for me as far as an mmo goes.http://www.crydee.com/

The same could be said of Tolkien, dying before the return of the king was finished, you also could tell the difference.

You really should do some fact checking before posting nonsense.

    J. R.R. Tolkein died 2 September 1973 (aged 81)

"The Return of the King"  was first published 20 October 1955, nearly 18 years before his death.

Dragon Hunter (the French cartoon/TV series/movie/videogame/Nintendo DS thingie): http://dragonhunters.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon_Hunters_Wiki

Awesome story, creative, quirky, very interesting ideas involving combat and crafting and such.

Runelords could work nicely too if done in a manner close to the book (ambiguity of accepting the power through runes by taking the sources power/sense): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Runelords

Played: Pretty much any fantasy MMO, some did not even make it to release ...
Favorites: UO, EQ2, Vanguard, Wurm Online, Salem, ESO, Creativerse
Playing: ESO, Creativerse, Guild Wars 2
Anticipating: (sigh) ... maybe Ashes of Creation

I was going to say this and decided most wouldn't even know the series. I could list a few I would like to see.

Sword of Shannara - Lots of lore

The Similarion - I would love to see this.

Harry Potter - If done right I think this could be fun.

Mistborn - This has a great setting for an MMO.

Others I have seen listed I would like :

    Dune

    Wheel of Time

I have two world setting from books that I would love to see made into both movies and MMORPG's.

    The Black Company

The Malazan Book of the Fallen

The Sword of Truth trilogy is another favorite.

Another series equally well written: The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever

    OP

I think you are looking down the wrong end of the telescope with your question.

IMO you heed to decide what hind if game/ game play you want ....................then find   the book series that would support it.

Top 3 in no particular order.

Brandon Sanderson, stormlight archive. The books I give to literary friends to show them that my favourite genre has great writers putting out highly original stuff.

Robert jordan, wheel of time. Reasons stated throughout the thread by others so eloquently. Staggering depth, screams mmorpg.

And my sleeper. KJ parke4, engineer trilogy. Because we NEED a high quality steampunk setting for an mmo and parker's work is bloody brilliant, stepping out of the cliche while still remaining steampunk as all hell.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

    Currently Playing EVE, ESO

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed.

    Dwight D Eisenhower

My optimism wears heavy boots and is loud.

Some good choices out there already.

    The Passage by Justin Cronin

Definitely some possibilities, it'll be interesting how he ends it, but I think there is plenty of room to build a world, and not be tied to too much lore, or too closely to the books.

    No love for Zelazny?

The Chronicles of Amber, you could make each level/area a entirely different theme. You could go from fantasy to steampunk to scifi to a more contemporary setting all in one.

The Demon Cycle series by Peter Brett

Death Stalker series by Simon Green

Theres no name for the series of books, but the first one is titled There Will be Dragons by John Ringo

and of course, the previously mentioned Wheel of Time by Jordan and Riftwar series by Feist

A very heart-wrenching series indeed, to do it any justice though It'd most likely need a perma-death system or at the very least a heavy penalty for dieing.

Hardcore reading deserves a hardcore mmo for these novels.

As so many people have said, Wheel of time would make a great game.  I know a lot of people are fans of RA Salvatore (never enjoyed his book myself though).

But one much lesser known author who's books would make a decent game Patrick Rothfuss "Kingkiller Chronicle" serries.  It's dark, gritty, and not as "high" fantasy as others.   While still having magic and mystery in the world.
