I think this is an interesting suggestion, that males play females because they get treated better in the game as a female than as a male, so I was wondering if there is some truth to that.

I play male and female characters. None of my reasons why have to do with how my characters are treated at all.
I play games to play characters. I don't try to recreate myself other than usually making a male character that resembles my looks to some degree. I would be a pretty boring character in most games.
I just like to make up characters and then bring them to life within the game world is the best reason I can think of.
when it comes to making a character in a game, I treat gender the same as all the other choices I make. I usually have an idea in mind for my ideal version of whatever race/class combination I'm making, sometimes some original character I thought up or sometimes influenced by a favorite from books. I never expected peoples characters to match them in reality so I guess I never expected others to treat my any different because of my characters gender, and that's been true in every game I've played except for SWG (maybe because people only had 1 or 2 characters? only game I ever got creepy /tells assuming I was female because of a character)
You can't pigeonhole MY gender, OP! THIS IS 'MERICA! Land of the free! And home of the... Free! ... -Er!

I think now most are aware of this and don't automatically assume a female character is played by a female.
The only times I will play a female character is if I have no option of a male character. I don't have any issues with people playing the opposite sex. Truthfully, I could care less what other people do in game. I also always prefer alien and beast races (GW2's Charr for example) over humans. Humans are so boring to me. Plus, I already play a human in real life.
If I was to add a suggestion to the OP. Could you please possibly put in an option like "Always play a male character" or something along those lines. Because right now I cant choose any of the options. None of them apply to me :-) .
i play female characters because i like the character models better. If i like how the male (any race) model looks then i will also play a male (for example, Trolls and Tauren in WoW). With that said, when i play an mmo i talk to people so i make sure in some way they know they are talking with a dude behind a female character before they start flirting.
Outside of the two examples i gave i have no reason to play male characters in other mmos because i find them ugly and not appealing, unless its something like Trove then yeah ill role a male character since theres no visual difference lol.
My character will stay with me for as long as im playing the game so i must like my character.
I don't notice any different treatment if play a male or female character. My reason for playing a female character is because I find it more fun to create one and generally I like their animations better. I think Aion is what really got me to play a female character due to the males run like they have a stick up their rear, while the females run a bit more normal.
EDIT: Also I agree with rojoArcueid.

I question the premise that female characters get treated 'better'...they get treated 'differently'.
Let's take the main observation...that females get 'free stuff'...that's not entirely true. The free stuff is never free. It's paid for by /tell hells, beggings to get on TeamSpeak or Skype, OOC convos about whatever the giver wants to talk about, and having to hear about how bad you are if you don't do what the giver wants you to do.
So I try to avoid the free stuff and the better treatment when I play as a female. Because the price for the better treatment is too high in most cases.

I thing everyone know just because is a female char doenst mean its a female player and just because is a male char doesnt means its a male player, so i never notice any diferent treatment related to the char gender in my years of mmos, i play both.
But some guys change their actitude when they ear on TS that some char is really a girl
Who is saying females are treated better and what is considered "better" exactly?
Never noticed any difference in treatment even back in the old MUD days when online gaming was pretty new.
I play it because staring at just male models gets boring after a time and because sometimes I like to name my characters after my wife or daughters. I make about 50/50 Male and Female.
Typically, I roll a male all things being equal. That said, I will create a concept for a character and then a name that attempts to fit that character. If the name and concept is female and that is the best fit, then that is what I go with. Secondarily, I look at the game itself. Currently I am playing FFXIV. And TBH, if as a caster, the male outfits are not flattering. AT ALL. Same for low level anything. In fact, I still remember rolling a Marauder. To say, "Watch out for the guy running around with a huge axe in a pink dress." Sounds a little redundant.
So yeah, should I roll any alts in XIV, they will be females.
You should add an option for girls and guys who don't ever play female characters so that we can see the results.
I don't play many male characters myself. It's not a conscious decision usually, it's just an automatic response. I did have a male tauren in WoW, mainly because of the voice....it has all the sexy. I have more than a few friends who picked blood elf guys for the same reason.
I only play female if its gender locked.
nowadays my personal experience is that it doesn't matter what your gender is, allis nearly equal in treatment.
