I think almost no one will play MMO at 4k resolution.

A lot of it is going to come down to price. Is 4k a fad like plasma turned out to be, or is it going to truly take over the market? Additionally, is there truly a benefit to being an early adopter? If 4k turns out to be the next best thing, the prices will come down dramatically as the market becomes flooded.

Actually I think MMOs are perfect for 4k, as they tend to be CPU bound. I play MMOs at 4k.

No amount of pixels will make a bad game good...

i think the no of pixels are irrelevant, no-one will play a bad mmo just because it has 4k, and no-one will avoid a mmorpg if it does not have 4k.  If its a great game then 4k would be a bonus if it doesn't hit performance.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

I feel impoverished am still playing on a 19 inch screen at 1600 x 1200
    Garrus Signature

The game does not need to support 4K. You just select the resolution. No support needed whatsoever. I have yet to find a game that does not offer me 4K resolution.

What's the problem? I play all games in 4K, that includes all MMO's. FF14 looks pretty amazing in 4K, so did AA, ESO and Wildstar. They are all mediocre to absolute garbage games but they run fine in 4K.

Why would i not play in 4K? I don't get the OP at all.

The charts he posted are garbage too, get a 970 or 980 and you can play in 4K with good FPS. Get SLI and you are rocking 60FPS. Just because old AMD cards suck does not make 4K invalid.

So for gaming i dont see why its needed yet since pc screens are much smaller than like 50 inch tv so the difference is even harder to spot their.

Its not about the size of the TV. Its about your viewing distance. With a 4k TV you can sit closer and see more definiton. If you sit too far back you may as well have a standard 1080p TV. Also, I doubt you are even viewing 4k content on your 4k TV. Do you even have the proper HDMI cable?

There are optimal viewing distances for all resolutions. A 28" 4K monitor reaches fovea resolution (the human eye) at around 25"-27" viewing distance. You get what is called "Retina". There is a formula, google it and find your optimal viewing distance for your 50".

You don't want to use HDMI. Use display port and you get 4K/60Hz with 30Bit Color instead of 24bit.

For me the problem is not frames, it's UI scaling. Some games just don't work well with 4K, the resolution throws everything off and makes the text super small.

Now, which one of you will adorn me today?

You would be incorrect. the difference between 60 fps and 30 fps is very VERY noticeable. Anything above that though and you probably wont notice much of a difference. Its why consoles nowadays are working as hard as possible to get their games at 60 fps stable.

4k will be a standard, just as 16:9 widescreens did for televisions.  It just takes a lot of time.  Prices need to come down and technology will get better by then.  Devs will be forced to support it when more people start getting 4k resolution monitors.  How many people still use 800x600 for gaming?  lol.

A few months ago I upgraded from 1080p to 1440p. On those rare occasions when I switch back, the difference is very noticeable. It doesn't affect MMOs so much, because they mostly tend not to take much advantage of higher resolutions when available. With some other games it makes a huge difference. Games like The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Metro Last Light,  Star Citizen (an exception to the MMO rule), etc. are stunningly beautiful at 1440p, and would be mind blowing at 4K. I seriously pity anyone who can't see the difference, although I'm sure it's genuine - just as some people can't tell the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps. One of the great things about being a PC gamer is that you can decide what is most important to you (in this case, resolution vs fps), and choose accordingly.

many play mmos at 4k. but compared to the total population of mmo gamers sure we have still a few more years before 4k becomes mainstream on PC.

also 30 fps and 60 fps are totally different. at 60 fps you can easily feel the game is more smooth and it feels "faster" it is not even about visuals. doubt you need Eagle Eyes to spot it. don't believe the lies told to you by previous gen. look how it's all about 1080/60 fps now that console hardwares are updated. if 30 fps was good enough why are they bothering then? i am not saying everyone can see the difference but imo most that played in both 30 and 60 can tell the difference. now above 60 probably doesn't make much difference but i don't know about that.

    my top MMOs: UO,DAOC,WoW,GW2

most of my posts are just my opinions they are not facts,it is the same for you too.

    4k is only viable in mmo's at decent fps if you have 290x x2 / 970 x2 / 980 x2 or 1 295x

I think 4k might become more mainstream when you can play it at 60fps with 1 card.

So maybe at the end of next year or the year behind it might see those cards for prices what the average gamer can afford.

MMO also tends to be heavy on the CPU and perhaps with DX12 and mmo's designed from the ground up for it can have a great boost for performance.

I believe DX12 will give gamers a flat 20% extra performance without changing any hardware, so who knows where this ends.

I believe the graph shows that performance scales linearly with resolution, No matter the GPU in that list, they all suffer from a 3x to 4x drop when going to 4k.

The graph is 1920 x 1200 instead of 1920 by 1080, but close enough.

280x cost  around 200 euro and dollars it would be even cheaper.

Didnt knew  3840x2160 is 4k I dont got a 4k screen but geforce exp always recommend that resolution with dsr or something. And fps is around  40-60

Cant say about games, but videos that have fast movements and are shot at 30 Hz without motion blurr, i.e. shutter speeds far above 1/60sec and each single frame is sharp without blurr, well that actually looks highly irritating and not natural at all.

In MMOs I find 30Hz usually tolerable. Not great, sure. But tolerable. At 15 Hz it starts getting really irritating.

If my PC was capable of playing an MMO at 4K and maintaining at least 60 fps, then hell yes i would definitely use it.. sadly the hardware is just not up to it, but i think its fairly safe to say that 1080 at 60 fps can safely be considered entry level graphic level of quality/performance for even a mid range PC, i don't think anyone would be satisified with less that at least that level of detail & responsiveness from an MMO, and definitely not from a single player game.image

It seems pretty unanimous that while it would be good, MMOs and hardware aren't ready yet. MMOs have always had to make sacrifices in terms of presentation to support the more demanding networking requirements. It'll likely trickle down though, like any technological advances.
