Its weird, I disagree with nearly every column Christina writes, haha. In this case, I prefer to have the non-gender locked option, but its not even on my list of what makes or breaks a game.
Always so melodramatic "the game will fall short of even games that are many years older", expectations that "independent MMORPGs are going to 'save' the genre" are "sure tempered" because some classes are gender locked.
Come on this is pretty much a non-issue, and even if its something you feel strongly about making it the basis of judging the unreleased game against other games, or whether a game will "save the genre" surely is making a mountain out of a molehill.
I don't know, it just makes me feel sad to see journalists start the negativity train about mmos that haven't even entered beta, especially about something so relatively trivial. Couldn't we just say "Crowfall and genderlocked classes": Message of article: "Some classes are gender locked, some community members would like all classes gender unlocked ArtCraft considering it as a stretch goal". And leave out all the heavy handed "disappointing move" and suggestions that the game will be crap because of it?
Well i have been saying for a long time that games are trying to get away with using the same models.I am pretty sure it is near impossible to make a female and male counterpart of each class using the same model,so i can see how it pertains to budget.
It could be MUCH worse, you can have H1Z1 that only has 1 model period, not even a female model in the game.
IMO it is not the end of all of a game ,i can point to MANY more issues that bother me a lot more.Sure i would want both sexes on every model but budget is going to be a factor in EVERY game,so we better get used to some corner cutting.Like i said IF this was my biggest peeve,i would happy to play this game but it is not even close to a major factor in the game being good or bad based on my opinion, which is the game looks rather weak anyhow.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
So basically it isn't politically correct or gender neutral so it is bad? PC > Game Lore.
What about all those that don't fall into the male/female groups? Should games make 10 different types of "sex" for each race? Or put it on a sliding scale?
For those that don't know there are currently 12 archetypes with a 13th character on the way.
Of those gender locked:
Elk - Lore, but could easily be made "female" with some slight customizing.
Guinea Pig - Lore, but could easily be made "female" with some slight customizing.
Stone Dwarf - Lore and makes no sense to have females.
Succubus - Lore and makes no sense to have males.
Minotaur - Assuming on this one, but again, lose the horns and add some udders, tada female...
As a few pointed out, does anyone complain that Amazons are only female? These are video games, it's not that serious.
Don't mind genderlock as long as there is a variant class for each sex, they wouldn't even need the same skill set...just a variant of the base class. I think most people would find that agreeable.
It's 2015 how can people still defend gender locked classes? I'd love to read the reactions from the "it's not an issue" crowd, if they made popular choices like warrior a female only class.
it's not a big deal having to play different genders. the character itself being interesting to you should be the priority, and if you only like characters of one gender...then I don't know what to tell you

There is nothing to defend this is a GIANT yawn. If they made the warrior class female only, I'd name mine Xena and proceed to play with a kick ass female warrior.

Well every Archetypes are available as male but the Stoneborn (genderless) and the Fae.
I can't imagine they can't find it in their budget to not have any gender locked classes. I don't really care, but for many female gamers I've know it would gamebreaking. Lol at people calling the article too opinionated...what do you care if she writes her opinion in her article. Perplexing reactions to this article, for sure.
Genderlocked classes generally don't bother me, as long as they're done properly, like Zewks said above. For example, if you're dealing with classes based on amazons or buddhist monks, it actually makes sense to an extent for them to be genderlocked.
As long as they mesh well and most of the classes aren't genderlocked, it doesn't bother me.
This is the approach I take for it.
I have no problem with gender locked classes, or race locked for that matter. It isn't lazy, it is lore/story.
Heck, I played an Elf Huntress in Shadowbane because I liked the story and concept of the Huntress. I could care less that it was a female character (that being said, my main character is typically female anyways, it just works out that it was a gender locked class with a good lore/story behind it)
Agreed If the lore is there it doesn't matter just as long as it's a good one.

People still think this is an mmorpg and are approaching their design as such. Gender locked classes is just another example of how much it isn't.
And before someone rises up to defend Crowfall from my statement, know that my statement isn't meant to be critical, just a statement of fact based on the features and gameplay they have announced. Its not traditional, and thats fine. I'm not saying there is anything wrong one way or another, just that people must look at Crowfall differently because its different. Trying to put it in your MMORPG box is only going to lead to all kinds of problems.
also, inb4 people redefine what an mmorpg is for the 15935th time to exonerate Crowfall, as if it needs defending.
it might be something as simple as trying to save some money on art assets. I could live with it if that were the case- non gender locked would be better ofc but it's not a breaker for me if they're doing it to stretch a buck. they aren't a huge corporation.

Thank you, Crowfall, for not wasting budget on meaningless cosmetics! When choosing an animal class I couldn't care less if that animal is a male or female animal. Having both gender options available for humanoid classes/avatars when the game gets released should be more than enough.
Gender-locking is the 'huge disappointment'? How about, 'This article is a huge disappointment'.
I am having a problem discerning what the complaint is. Is there a problem with the Crowfall community regarding perceived sexism, or is this 'merely' disappointment with lack of game choices. I don't think either argument is valid.
If it's within the lore of the game that certain species are neuter gender, what is the problem with that? Also if it's the game lore that the female or male portion of a species doesn't participate in battles, is that a crime? I don't recall anyone complaining about the lack of female dwarves in Lord of The Rings canon. (On a side note, as a male, I would totally dig and play a character from some sort of matriarchal society.)
As for the lack of options, there are plenty of choices for rolling female and male characters in Crowfall. If some are being excluded to save on production costs and time, how can people complain? This is a game with limited funding and we'll be lucky to actually play the released version.
The TL;DR is that I don't believe gender-locking complaints are valid. There are bigger fish to fry than this minor issue. Also I could give a shit less what some politically correct minority perceives as social injustice. Get a life already.

That's fine if they choose to gender and/or race lock classes but that is a big turn off for me. Pity, the game looked interesting.
Playing: varies every day it seems.

Gender lock in Crowfall makes a lot of sense :
- Guinecean : how would you recognize a male Guinea Pig from the female? Breast?
- Fae : in the lore, Faes are systematically eliminating males. No male faes!
- Elken : male and female deers are pretty similar
- Stoneborn : genderless stone golems, fulfilling the Great Work

Mardukk most of the gender locked races are not humanoid.
I don't want female Guinea Pigs, Deers or Minotaurs. XD
The druid can be played as male or female, just like almost every other humanoid archetypes.
