So whats the point of mmorpg.com....

....if many games listed on this website aren't even MMORPGs? Hell, some of the games on here don't even support Multiplayer! I used to visit this website to check out the latest MMO games but lately I have been seeing tons of games that don't belong here at all. For example:

* Sleeping Dogs Triad Wars: doesn't support Multiplayer, it just lets you have a turf war with other people, but the game still takes place in a PvE environment. It just informs you about what other people are doing in their game.

* Pillars of Eternity: is a SIngleplayer-only game, nothing in the game even hints at Multiplayer. Why is this game on here?

* Dying Light: Supports a co-op mode for up to 4 people, but otherwise is just a Single-player game.

* The Crew: only supports up to 8 players in a session, the only thing it has got going for itself is the fact that it is able to transfer you to a new session as you are driving, but still theres absolutely no MMO features to be found in the game

* Divinity: Original Sin: are you kidding me, its co-op mode only supports a maximum of 2 players.

I could probably go on for an eternity if I would check every single game on this website, I just listed these ones from the top of my head. Why are these games listed on a website called mmorpg.com? Are they bribing them to be listed? Is nobody at mmorpg.com actually checking whether the games they list are even MMOs?

This used to be a nice website for me to visit to stay up to date but I dont see the purpose of it anymore when maybe 25% of everything here isn't even an MMO, and there's even Singleplayer-only games.

As I see it, not very many MMOs fit the RPG part of the site's title. So they expanded by adding in other RPGs, not just MMORPGs. They also threw in some of the more "popular games" so that they can be talked about here, rather then elsewhere.

Traffic control is how I see it. I visit the areas with the games I am interested in (not many at all here) and just hang out in the general discussion area. No biggie to me :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

MMORPG development came to a rapid halt many years ago, in order to remain relevant they had to branch out to other genres, and start redefining what a MMO was/is to things such as MOBAs, (MMO-like some editors use).

Games we get today are pale imitations of what the genre could be, but you'll be told we have to change with the times.

    Nice first post.....

Why not have them here? Why NOT discuss them? Got something better to do?

The majority of what is posted/discussed here ARE MMORPGs....but a few titles are just multi player....so what? Should they divert traffic away? Make this site limited? Why?

I agree and wish they'd weed out some of the non-mmorpg stuff.  It serves as nothing but clutter to me.  Often these days I end up reading about more games that are not only irrelevant to the genre, but irrelevant to me altogether.

Yes, I do have something better to do.  Discuss mmorpgs.  If I wanted to discuss mobas or online games in general, I'd go somewhere else.

The point is to discuss games.  This site has forums to discuss games, has articles and ads to showcase games.  It has an emphasis, but is in no way limited only to, MMORPG games.

    This isn't a difficult concept.

The point of mmorpg, com is to give mmo players a place to whine about everything. Sometimes it's about mmorpgs but during slow times it can be about wtf the point of mmorpg.com is.

    nope.

    that's PCGAMER. This is MMORPG.

    Yes.

    PCgamer is a competitor.

They discuss games, same as this one.  Again this site has an emphasis, but again is not limited to MMORPG games.  PCgamers has no such emphasis.

Basically, because of the name of this site, some people think we are supposed to talk only about MMORPGs. Nevermind that someone who's playing MMORPGs might be interested in some other type of game. THE PEAS AND THE CARROTS MUST NOT TOUCH.

Ha Ha.. I agree with both and others..  MMORPG is doing the same thing the actual games are doing.. They are redefining and expanding the genre so they can include and acquire a bigger market = MORE MONEY $$$..   It is just that simple..  It's why we have games all over the map anymore so they can appease and attract RPG, PvP, FPS and MOBA type players..  I"m waiting for Blizzard to come out with their new "mmorpg" and call it World of Farmville, that can be played on any mobile device..  lol   And it will all be covered here..

I think his point was, it'd be kinda like if PCgamer started discussing console games. And i'm obviously talking about console-only games not PC ports from console.

This site isn't exactly a spring chicken. Just look at the join dates of some people who posted in the thread.

The markets and audiences (and thus the things they are interested in) have changed considerably in all this time, the site adapted. So yes, the name is a bit off now. Who cares.

I just ignore the things/subforums I am not interested in, works fine.

The point of MMORPG.COM is to give you an outlet to voice whatever pops into your head at the time whilst being spammed by advertisements for games you have no intention of ever playing.  In a nutshell, you're on the internet's equivalent of the National Enquirer for games.

Because the only thing this website has going for itself is the fact that it targets a niche-market (MMORPGs) Now I can understand that the definition of an 'MMORPG' is not fixed so it can be applied to a wide variety of games, but I really struggle to think of a way how a Single-player only game can be considered an MMORPG. If I want to check Singleplayer RPG games there's dozens of other sites that do a better job at it than mmorpg.com

What really annoys me is that I go here to find new MMORPG games, and some limited offers or posts attract my attention, then later on I find ound out the games don't even have Multiplayer........ like c'mon.

  • madazzmadazz Member RarePosts: 2,115

There is nothing wrong with this website covering non MMORPG games. The problem is when they have staff that don't know what Massively Multiplayer Online means and they mislabel games in their articles/editorials/writing. Its one thing for various members of the community to think a 5-16 player game is an MMO, but its another when the site that these people rely upon to teach them, teaches them wrong. Just look at the current crop of users that have sprung up here in the last 5-7 years. They are becoming increasingly less knowledgeable about what an MMORPG is. We would have NEVER had a fight over LoL or Dota being an MMO. This all changed when Guildwars launched and people got super confused. Even the developers tried to step in to correct them, but it was no good.

If you were here many years ago as a regular, you would have seen many of the same topics, but amongst those topics were many interesting posts. People used to share ideas, they used to talk about features in a new found game they loved, or maybe they just discovered a new game. Some used to show their roster of characters and people would get together in game and play. Now you have all these people who want to masturbate their own ego, refer to themselves as "vets" and put down newbies. Like seriously "Musings of an MMORPG Veteran"? Get over yourself.

So basically whats wrong with MMORPG isn't the fact that they cover non MMO or MMORPG games. Its that they don't guide their community, and they employ people just as confused as many of their readers. It results in endless discussions/arguments and bannings because so many members of this community really don't have a place to say anything as they have no idea what they are talking about.

The main drawing power of this site used to be the community. I have hopes itll get better. Heck, todays first page of threads is MUCH better than usual. The main offending thread is the "musings" thread.

Not much point left.  Mmorpg.com is way past it's prime.   Site that does not have focus and forum that does not really provide much relevant disussion.

I visit here mostly for entertainment value.  I just wonder how long that will last.

Have to agree, coverage of other genres isn't an issue for me.  It's that they label games such as WoT and LoL as MMOs when they're just multiplayer games.  Nothing about the multiplayer systems in these games is any different from a CoD or a Gears of War multiplayer system.  Why, all of a sudden, they're not sharing their genre with those games and, instead, folks want to lump them into the genre of MMORPGs eludes me.

It's one of the few times that I will earnestly and, without anger, label something "stupid".
