Update on the Progression Server... Slow Progression wins by a mile

VesaviusVesavius Member RarePosts: 7,908

It's a shame, I would have preferred locked progression, but that was never going to appeal to the current in game player base that had control of the vote. The result was always going to be skewed to the existing jaded vet, rather than the lapsed player eager to give DBG new money.

So, ok, fine. Slower progression is the next best thing. I guess the folks that want locked still have other options to play that style, though it's a shame that they can't give DBG their money even if they want to.

Maybe they went that way because they don't see much more of an audience for it outside of their existing players. If that's the case, focusing on retention and catering to the 'jaded vet' might be the best way to not only keep existing players but attract the other seemingly disenfranchised jaded vets in MMO circles.

After watching the 16th anniversary video it was mildly interesting and exciting to hear that we are getting another progression server. This will be the 3rd installment since 2006. I mentioned mildly because I'm not sure how receptive this will be among "old school" players who have moved on (since previous progressions) and even existing "old school players" (none-hardcore).

A close friend of mine finally came back to play EQ last year after trying to get him to return since 2006. Yep, he's a bit of a procrastinator and seemed content to play on my account when he was visiting than fire up his account. I'm now wresting with mix feelings.

As far as what Vesavius was commenting on its going to be interesting to see what happens. Will the hard core, like they did in the first and partly in the second progression server, dominate and rally their base to plow through content. In reality it may not matter. Old School types may return to reminisce, but will they have staying power?

In the next few months I suppose we'll see what Daybreak has to offer and we'll see how much appeal the new progression server will generate.

Well, what 'they see' has always been a core issue with SOE and now DBGs I guess... They have always been tunnel visioned.

I'll definitely return. Played the last progression for a year or so. Only stopped because I went on vacation, then got busy, distracted and just never went back heh. I was reading the link, it seems it will launch some time in the summer.

Thanks for the post OP. I rarely check the EQ sites anymore.

Sounds interesting. But with those reduced times between expansions it would be a constant hassle for me to keep up with the content. Unfortunately I don't have the amount of time to spend on gaming any more like I had 15 years ago. And the vets will try to speed run as fast as possible through the content.

If you've got data to the contrary then hook them up! image

I quit EQ back in 2004. I voted for the slower progression and am looking forward to the server opening and coming back.  I am not a hardcore player and never got to do any endgame. I just enjoyed the social aspects.

I've convinced a few friends to come back (or start) to EQ this summer, so we'll see how it goes.

How will they monetize the progression server? Surely it wont have the cash shop as that would screw up the old school feel.

Do we have a date yet or just the standard SOE (DBG) "soon"?

From what I recall all the progression servers are only accessible to subscribers so there is no need to monetize it.
