I'm sorely tempted to buy this as I loved the Baldurs gate games with a passion... Hoping to buy a flat soon so I may be sensible and wait for the price to come down a bit first..
Or as typically happens, I'll get drunk and say fuck it and buy anyway

Buy it NOW!!! Dont wait until drunk.
Look, I am not one to get on a hype train and I abhor hype. I am anti hype. Its all bullshit. Except this time- Its not.
If you enjoyed baldors gate even a little bit you need to stop whatever you are doing and get this game. Worth every penny. I'm easily 40 hours in and there is a TON of content I know I havent seen. Looks like there is reasonably 100 hours here if you do everything (more if you read everything) and this isnt including the difficulty levels that actually will change the game (supposidly- I havnt messed with Hard yet)
This isnt just filler content but really well thought out, lore heavy, content that was made with care. There is a world here that lives and breathes. Your imagination will get you sucked right in after thefirst few hours and you wont want to leave.
It has flaws- But its a masterpiece.
I've slept a few hours since friday and ended up staying up half the night again. I havnt done this in years. many years. I'm on a nearly 4 day marathon gaming session and not only reminiscing about how complex, deep and created with love that games of the 90s used to be-Im playing one made with that same devotion and care and its evident in everything from the soundtrack, to the sound effects, to the flavor dialogue , the plot and the encyclopedia worth of text about so much that is going on this world concerning the politics, religion, trade, economy...God...Even past lives of NPCs are detailed.
This is the closest to tabletop gaming that a CRPG has ever gotten.
Its fucking amazing...
And I am no fan of RTWP combat preferring the more strategic 'turn based'- However, the combat is even good (although the weakest part of the game imho) and requires tactics and creative thinking- It rewards thinking outside the box and devising unique strategy for many encounters... And its hard. Its normal mode is more akin to most games 'hard'mode- But its rewarding.
I cannot even tell you how excited I am to see the type of games I have loved (and dearly missed) coming back. Wasteland 2 was alright and good for nostalgia. D:OS and Shadowrun were great games- POE has now outdone them all- And even outdone many classics from the past.
Yes..Its that good. And if you see my posts you know ive never came close to this level of excitement about anything.
Now run along and buy this game. Get lost in this fantastic world with the rest of us.. Go to work without sleep like the rest of us...have pissed off wives like the rest of us... Its good times man- Play a classic again.

Good post and I agree to it all. It is very polished (with the exception of a few minor bugs) and has extras it's predecessors didn't have (at least from what I remember!) These games to me are the closest to tabletop rpgs you can get.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Except for the whole play by yourself thing. TTRPG were always social events for me.

Well ya, lol. I guess that is a big part of playing with friends. I guess I can role play while role playing that there are about 5 of my old high school friends here and stacks of empty mountain dew cans and Cheeto stained character sheets.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
It's a bit funny, for some of us playing back then (ok at least me...) my thoughts were: "Wow, I can play a D&D game without having to get together with my friends!"
Not that I didn't enjoy that, I have many great memories of sessions, but having a computer game where I could do it too? WOW!!
The major problem with games like this, you get to the end and want more and there isn't any. MMO's ruined me for any of the rpg games, even though this game seems to be much better than the norm.
I feel the exact same way. Its also rough that I have that need for my progress to be relevant for a longer period of time, so in a single player game, I often wonder if its even worth putting many hours into it.
That said, this game has some amazing features and the story if very enjoyable. Accountability, factions and immersion are a thing again in this one.
The only thing I haven't been totally sold on is the combat and the need to micromanage every single little detail and the lack of an ability give certain orders to my party to do things on their own. Nothing worse than having to pause 50 times in a fight just because one of my party members is standing there doing nothing...

hehe, it's awsome.
We used to pile into a friends basement and huddle around the computer watching while one of us played. Many a game was completed that way including Ultima 3. I remember when the grass started to attack us.. everyone was like "Oh Crap!". I spent countless hours on the phone while playing games like Phantasie on my C-64. Those were some epic games!
But even back then my dream was really to have a CRPG that a group of us could explore together. I am hoping that Sword Coast Legends is as good as POE apparently is... or at least in the same ballpark.

I wish it was multiplayer. I always played infinity engine games with my buddy. With a full party or just two character duo for crazy challenge. The strategy and dying and failing wad part of the fun. Don't need an MMORPG or MMO just solid coop. I hope they add it or its modded into the game.
