I'm lowering my standards by a lot. I don't care much about genre anymore, I'm just looking to try out some MMOs that aren't:
A) Still in alpha/beta/early access
Aren't several years old with a "mature" community
Neither of those scenarios equate to fun in my books. You're either on edge knowing everything you do can change and be wiped so there's no point to playing (beta). Or the learning curve is too steep, with 5 billion updates and DLCs having been added since the game launched; the average player is well beyond any level you can attain or compete with as a "newbie"; and all the starter zones are as dead as a graveyard.
I played DAoC about 3 months after its launch, and that was perfect timing in my books. Nice large, spread out player base still had people experiencing the "newness" of the game while others were already well on their way to being max level and RvRing. I'm looking for a game that's new enough, but not yet old enough, to have that same feel to it.
I tried GW2 when it went on sale once but everyone else in my level zone were few and far between, or were older players with older accounts or had friends power leveling them through the start area. I tried LotR when it was released but decided to wait til some bugs got ironed out. Apparently I waited too long since when I returned I was all alone in the zones without a soul around.
One option I would also consider is an older game that still has an active lower level player base, like many F2P games have these days.
