Is EQII as good as old school EQ?

Just asking for your opinion on the matter.

They are way different. Apples and Oranges. Nothing well ever be as good as EQ and we all know it. That was "a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away" type stuff. That having been said, EQ2 is a charming game with state of the art graphics, lots and lots of content and strong community. Stop and smell the roses in this one and enjoy your stay in Norrath.image

If you liked old school Eqdead, prior to SOE screwing it up, don't bother with EQ2, as you will be very disappointed.

as anarchyart said they are two very different games. however, i have several people in my guild and i know a lot more who used to play eq1 and like eq2 just as much and a few like it even more.

Schutzbar - Human Warrior - Windrunner Alliance - World of Warcraft
Nihilanth - Kerra Paladin - Blackburrow - EverQuest II

EQ II is much faster paced and a much better solo game than EQ 1.  That may be a good or a bad thing, depending on where you are coming from.  It lacks the depth of EQ 1, but also a lot of the clunkyness. The one exception is crafting, which is deeper than EQ 1 crafting.  There is not nearly as much content in EQ II as in EQ 1, but the content that is there is much more polished and "user friendly."  You really should read some revews of the game before you try it, it's a MMORPG vaugley inspired by EQ rather than a true sequal to EQ, imo.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

    EQ2 isn't as good

    Well I may as well chime in, if not just to say;

EQ2 is a few months old. EQ1 a few years. If you're talking actual content there is no use even comparing them at this point. Or even the mechanics. From what I have heard the Devs have adapted and changed/improved problems and quibbles in EQ2 in a much quicker timeframe compared to that of EQ1.

As for game mechanics, I never played EQ1, so wouldn't have the foggiest as to the comparisons and differences.

I dunno, personally if I'm in two minds about a game I just take the plunge and find out for myself. I mean, a comment like 'EQ2 isn't as good' doesn't really explain much of anything. If you (or anyone) have the spare cash and the time, find out for yourself. Pretty sure you can pick up half price or cheaper copies of EQ2 boxes by now.

EQ2 is the one game I am still playing since it's release. I go back and check out Ryzom, Horizons (to have a laugh), WoW, Guild Wars every now and then, but still find myself spending 90% of my time in EQ2.

    Gets my vote.

The two games have very different mechanics, but the moment I started, it had quite a familiar feel to it. The most obvious similarity is the music, but the player community had an air of sameness.

I am thoroughly enjoying it, and hope to last longer than the 3 years I played EQI.

Both are good games.  In my opinion, no MMORPG will capture the sense of danger and wonder that everquest did. (im talking pre luclin here)

Everquest 2 has some great things in it, though.  Like the voiceovers for some quests.  Character customization.  Heroic Oppourtunities.  and my personal favorite, rediscovering old lands.

Two thumbs up for both games!

PLEASE SOE MAKE A CLASSIC EQ SERVER. Shadow of luclin was a prick in EQs side. PoP Was a gun to the face.

I personally think the original was better, at the time. But nowadays if you are deciding whether to play one or the other then you should go for EQ2 because its got more content and better graphics. I only played the original for a short time on a trial period but I thought it was an ace game back then and now when I think about it, it looks a bit naff and old. So if you're going to play one or the other then EQ2 is good, although it can get boring at parts.

Also can I mention one thing? The community on EQ2 is utter crap, hardly anyone ever talks to anyone and theres never gatherings of people in one area, they're always spread out so thinly that there's never anyone to help you or just to group with.

    Horney!
    I love you!

It actually still gives me butterflies when I think about the excitement and wonder of EQ1.  I played for over 2 years from launch.  I actually took advantage of a free trial they had like half a year ago.  Although I felt like the game play was completely different and didn't feel "right", the music and scenery brought all those emotions flooding back!  It was awesome and disheartening all at the same time.  As someone said already, nothing will ever evoke what EQ1 did.  A lot of that I attribute to it being "first".  But it also just simply had that special something that you can't put a finger on.  That something that makes you think about the game all day and immediately log in when you get home.

EQ2 does NOT have that something.  It has a lot of nice features, landscapes, etc, but it is definitely missing the something.  I tried really hard to like it a lot, but I lasted about 3 months.
