First time I played an MMO on Xbox one.

I'm a seasoned game player (that's a another way of saying I'm getting old).  :)

Anyway, I've played so many games over the years but all MMOs I've played were on my PC.  Keyboard and mouse for me.

Then I decided to try Neverwinter on the xbox one and I must say, it was extremely difficult to become comfortable with the controller after using keyb and mouse for so many years.  I've played single player games on the xbox one, but that's different, they are designed for the controller.  But MMO's, just trying to type something in chat is a chore and a half.   Must be why nobody types in chat and why some use xbox one mic to talk.

So after a while, I got use to the controller and was actually having some fun, but then being a 'seasoned' player, sigh, I began to feel rather quickly, that I was playing a solo game, not an MMO.  Oh sure, it has the MMO components found in other MMOs, leveling, gear upgrades, crafting (although the worst I've seen) and others, but there is little to no interaction with other players.

Now I'm sure this aspect of the game has nothing to do with the Xbox One version and is just part of the game design, but for some reason, it just felt magnified by using the xbox one version.

The real interesting part is that it actually advertises in game that you can solo all content (with the help of an NPC companion) but the dungeons and  skirmishes must be done with 5 live players.  And that's where I was disappointed the most with regard to playing this as an MMO.  You see when you join this 5 player group no one talks to each other, its rush through the dungeon and done.  I decided to open my chat and say 'hello all' and got no reply.  Did it again, and someone yelled through their xbox headphones, 'shut up dude!'.   And that was my rude awakening.  Is the future of interaction in games, especially this one, a thing of the past?   For this old timer, that's sad because most of the fun and laughs I had in MMOs was the interaction and friends I made.

So if you play it like a solo game, you'll have fun, but don't expect social interaction in this game, you'll get a rude awakening for sure.

Only played it the traditional way, so can't comment on any XBox issues, but while most people where not exactly leaping at the chance to finally speak with anoher human being, i never encounted anything like "shut up" while playing. It was more or less the same as everywhere - some say "hi", some you can talk with, some insist on speaking in their own language (French, German, Russian, whatever, doesn't matter) despite clearly being capable of English (e.g. when you link an item, it uses the language of the client, so you can infer some things), some are rude, some are really nice.

IMHO, Neverwinter has it's own not so small share of problems, but i don't think the community is one of it, at least not more so than in any other game.

Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde
And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore

I kinda experienced the same thing with both Defiance and DC Universe online. I played them both for quite some time on the PC and then left them. Recently I bought a PS3 and downloaded both games as well. With these 2 games having their own servers set apart from the PC players, I found both games to be more a single-player game than the already kinda solo experience I had on with the PC versions of the game. That while I also have a keyboard for the PS3 which clearly not many others have or use...

I don't know if Neverwinter has it's own console servers or that they mix with the PC gamers (I hope the latter), but I can imagine that the experience indeed can be that of a solo game. Somehow consoles really don't seem to be overly social when it comes to MMO gameplay. Not sure how it is with co-op gaming (just started on Destiny), but I guess that'll be somewhat better?

I actually like the game and dont even mind the lack of communication so much.

But the performance issues on the XB1 are hard to deal with. Trying to Tank effectively when you are getting 10fps and stutters on a boss fight make it interesting indeed.

There are times when I will freeze for 4-5 seconds ( or more).

If the performance were better I would likely play the hell out of this game. As of now it will be something to delve into a few hours a week until the Witcher comes out next month.

That'd mean that the XBOX1 will get an update pretty soon. Stuff like this are real game breakers (and real bad to be released as well) and will be fixed pretty fast. And I gotta give it to PWI/Cryptic, they do stand up for their games...

I plug a usb keyboard into my xbox one to use chat. I did find the controls in Neverwinter to bit a bit weird. I'm looking forward to ESO on console I just paid the £12.99 for it to be copied over. I did read somewhere that ESO on the console will have comms as soon as you join a group/raid so should overcome the chat problem.

Speaking about comms... I remember that Neverwinter on the PC has comms turned on by default. Is it also implemented on the XBOX1 version of the game?

I wouldn't get my hopes high about any fast patch, and from my experience, it's better if they don't patch anyways. Every patch broke more things than it fixed, and totally unrelated stuff on top of it.

Like, the fix some skill not properly triggering, and suddenly the doors in a random dungeon don't work anymore. Then they fix that door like three weeks later, and suddenly whenever you speak to a certain NPC the game crashes.

*THATS* the quality of the patches provided by PW/Cryptic.

And no, it wasn't just me. The forums where full of it each time.

Still a nice game for a while, but it could have been so much more.
