Steam's problem lies in the decision to load up on a large portion of junk games.  It has nothing to do with rpg or any other game theme.   You just have to be discerning.

It's not that we don't want *good* modders to make a little money on their hobby, it's that Valve and Bethesda are taking 75% of that money.

Add to that their hands off approach, the nature of Skyrim modding itself (sort order anyone?), asset reuse, etc.  Valve isn't going about this the right way... at all.

Never had a problem with RPGs, as the filtering system, user tags and reviews usually makes it easy to sort things out.

Now, trying to find a damn TCG in the sea of countless MtG DLCs, now THAT is a project and a half.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Click on "game" in the filter field and all of the DLC go away.

I think that your issue is more that Steam is the best there is out there today, and there's no better alternative.  If someone can do better, they will.  If Valve can do better, then I'm sure they'd be more than happy to listen.  After all, one of the products they are selling is Steam itself.  But writing an article on a third-party website is like ranting about your boss in the shower.

It would certainly make things easier if you could filter out all those games made with rpgmaker from the RPG games, some of them are probably okay, but mostly they are just crudimage

Steam is pretty good, but it definitely needs more options when it comes to the 'filters' image

A bigger problem (though relatively harmless on Steam) is what people call coop. No, Civlization or Starcraft or Battlefield do not have coop. Thats multiplayer. Coop is when you play through a story together, not when you just happen to be on the same map.

I absolutely love playing coop, but you have to sift through so many multiplayer games...

Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde
And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore

My son and I play Civ 5 co-op all the time. Just set both players to the same team number.

Steam has the tools in place to filter out anything you don't want easy enough.. of course if a person is to lazy or does'nt have two brain cells to rub together , they may be challenged.........

I do believe that I have never been really satisfied with anything I have bought off of Steam, although I must admit that list is fairly short, since I simply do not use Steam anymore.

Mayhaps I have been unlucky, but every one of the games (several of them "rpg's") I purchased through it was either buggy, misadvertised, or had me frustrated with one issue or another.  So again I just don't spend any more money there.

Agree completely though, their RPG category is a hot mess.  Allowing users to "tag" or categorize anything is an idiot move, imho.

The first time I fired up Steam I was definitely overwhelmed with the long list of games in the RPG and MMO categories, many of which seem out of place, far too amateurish or unworthy of commercial release.

On a positive side I have also come across a few fun (and cheap) games I might not otherwise have played if not for rifling through a hundred plus pages of "rpg" games on a slow Sunday.

On a negative side, good lord there is a lot of questionable games. How do these games even make it onto Steam? I get that Steam would like to grind out every penny they can from even the smallest potential audience but I can't help but feel it cheapens their brand and makes it harder for me to find games I might actually consider buying.

    Meh.

I wish I could auto-ignore indies, greenlight titles and early access. That way I would have to manually ignore over 3000 titles (so far).

Almost everything is called RPGs on Steam - I wonder how that's not an issue for you?

Right. Co-op is just co-operative multiplayer as opposed to PvP, so games like Civ 5 qualify.

I used to 100% despise what Steam stands for, they basically claim and hold rights to software YOU OWN,but you really don't own it,more like renting at near ownership costs. However over time i accept it and use it a lot,i guess since i pretty much only bug bargains,i won't feel a real hit if Steam ever tries to pull a fast one and go bankrupt under some government number, then starts up again under another business #.

You kinda own the games. When you rent something you only have it for a certan period of time. Also there would be no reason for steam go bankrupt and then start again. That sounds like some farfetched conspiracy theory. FInally, steam have said that if they ever were to go under, they would make available your entire librabry to you for download.

I mean, wow. Pot calling the kettle black eh?

I don't particularly care that this site reviews all sorts of games, more power to you guys, but el oh el. The things that get called MMO's and even RPG's on this site is hilarious, but then you say that about Steam. Pardon me while I go die of laughter.

11/10. This is so true. They call games like LoL and Hearthstone RPGs on this website and they make a column critising steam of the same thing.

We all love to complain about things, don't we ? With very little effort, most people could find half-a-dozen things they're unhappy with and would like to complain about.

Somehow it just doesn't feel satisfying (or socially acceptable) to praise the half-a-dozen things we do like, not when there's something "wrong" that needs to be fixed. And complained about...

When there is a problem, it should be fine to talk about it without getting this kind of reply.

We're not making up problems, the problems ARE there. Personally I spend much less money on steam games nowadays simply because browsing by genre is a nightmare now, and I don't do it anymore.
