Neither. It gets in the way of hearing enemies coming.

I pretty much listen to this at all times set to repeat on my Zune. Eating, sleeping, gaming, whatever. It's always there. Like a comforting whisper from an angel, it's the ipioid that soothes my savage heart & mind.
Depends on the game really. Some games have a really good soundtrack while others are forgettable. When I play FFXIV I tend to play with the music on when a new patch comes out for a bit so I can hear all of the new music, but after a while I'll want to listen to something else.
I listen to music whenever I'm on my computer, unless I'm being really nerdy and trying to get into a game randomly, or playing CoD. I'm always listening to music lol.
Here's the best playlist you can find on the internet. For real.
When all is said and done, more is always said than done.
I loved Eve's jukebox. It sucked when they took it out. Wish more games had that system. Generally, I would never play with music unless grinding. In WoW you could hear the swoosh sound of stealthy types moving.

I am all about in-game music. I honestly believe it enhances the experience when it's not generic or too low-budget. Sometimes when I am engaged in an endlessly monotonous task I will turn on my own music for a bit, however I always go back to the in-game stuff.

Here's a mind-expanding series from Stanford that helped me in ineffable ways. It's not music, but it falls into the category of 'learning while gaming'. It touches on everything from neurobiology to the philosophy of science. Wildebeest trying to cross an alligator infested river to signing apes. Schizophrenia to language. Game theory to chaos and complexity.
Here are a couple playlists I made:
Route I is instrumental with very occasional vocalizations and almost no lyrics. It goes from downtempo to psydub to semi-acoustic. It includes masterpieces such as Aes Dana's Memory Shell, Ott's Skylon, and Tycho's Past Is Prologue.
Route II is mostly lyrically driven. It includes ten albums from recent times that are electronic in nature with some jazz, funk, trip-hop, industrial, prog rock, and other misc psychedelia. I tried to go with a coherent vibe to this, but may have met with mixed results.

If the game has an epic soundtrack like WoW then i listen to the games music. Otherwise i play other music in the background.
If the game has voice overs then i dont put my own music in the background because i want to hear what they say in the quests without interrupting my music.
It depends. Usually the in game music but if there are annoying tracks I just turn it off.
For lord of the rings online, when I played, I used to listen to the in game music but then it just started getting horrible. Especially the bad synthesizer stuff.
I would then put in the music from the movies and that made it better.

P.S. That's right, I said Zune.
Wow thanks for the link!

I can't listen to music while gaming. I feel it takes away from the hard work people did matching scores to certain zones or the feel of paying against people
Really depends on what game it is and what music it offers. I usually go with my own music though and in some games no music at all since I need to hear the in-game sounds.

Need a poll option for "Combination of Both".

Only one game (serie) makes me listen to some of my own liked music and that's GTA.
Love listening to many of the radio stations but like in rl I often want to switch to my own music when driving.
Apart from the GTA series it's all ingame music for me with every other game I play.
For the most part ingame music contributes to the immersion factor when playing a game...atleast for me it does.
CNN repeats itself more frequently than the music in most MMO

Most of the time it depends on the region.
The west often opts for a slow ambience for many of it's outdoor areas, a large bombastic brass/strings piece for captial cities.
Actually as I was writing this out I realized how fruitless it would be actually go into analysis over it all, so with that being said. . .
Long story short:
West = Live Orchestral Recordings(Rob Brower, Matt Uelmen, etc)
East = Electronic(3rd party such as Studio EIM, or in house IE: HappyOZ)
I generally prefer the East, they can offer immersion and amusement.
