Confused....hardcore DDO experts please shed some light

From what I read online and small posts here and there I still have major issues with DDO - Maybe some of you know the answers?

Will this game be a true MMO ? like professiona; crafters, never ending world around us with merchants and other NPC's so players can freely walk town to town? or will it be a pure log in, find group and join a campain ? Those details im still foggy on. As you can see Im trying to imagine the game world, will it be like all the others? WoW? or will it be like true Pen and Paper - log on, small world and go directly into an instance. Your thoughts and imagintion will be welcomed :)

I don't think the devs really care about making this game just like the other MMO's. No crafting, No PvP, etc. I think what they are really trying to do is make it like D&D. They have a hardcore pen and paper rpg community they have to get playing this game. A lot of those folks have never played an MMO before, hence they wouldn't be as put-out as the rest of us becasue the game will be lacking the more familair features of a standard MMO.

BUT, the instances/dungeons are going to be amazing. Finally, we will have very interactive environments and smarter monsters. I'm sure eventually DDO will implement things like PvP/Crafting, but right now I hope they conentrate on making the quests as fun and different as possible.

The intentions are to make it just like PnP games. Which means most of the tedious MMO features (like taking a 15 min walk across baren fields to get to your dungeon) will be removed. Instead, when you are ready to go to your dungeon, you automatically arrive there via a overview map (think of Indiana Jones, where you have a map and the red dotted line that maps across the area). Of course, you might get ambushed on the way, but at least its not 15 minutes of running to get somewhere.

There is also no crafting, yet. Crafting in DnD is used in PnP, but the problem occurs when you have lv 20 wizards that can craft a ton of magical items. If they figure out how to prevent the high-end wizards from mass producing everything and destroy the economy, then they might add it in later. But I wouldn't hold my breath for it.

There will be only 1 big city (Stormreach) that is not instanced. This city will have multiple zones, but it will be the primary area for the tavern/group meet ups and dungeon starting points (NPCs). Almost all maps/dungeons will be instanced for just you or your group. However, there will be a few "open" maps where anyone can enter, similiar to how MMORPGs (wow, eq, etc.).

The game is set in the Eberron campaign and on the island continent of Xen'drik. Think of Xen'drik as an uncharted, unknown, huge, jungle, ancient island. There is only 1 city on the island which is used as a port to return to the mainland of Khoravaire continent. Xen'drik is wide open, so there are no limits on what the devs can use for dungeons.

Also, another really interesting feature is that you don't get XP for kills. You get XP for finishing your quest. So 1 quest could be to get the golden cup from the dungeon without letting the evil guild see you. So as a rogue, you can actually sneak through missions and steal the treasure and get the same (or more) XP as a bunch of bloodthirsty warriors. There will also be bonus XP (like if you didn't get noticed by anyone vs you kill half of the mobs).

Well...for crafting...the solution would be to use a ''EVE approach''.

If it take 1 week of REAL TIME to do a longsword +1, it would not be flooding the market...and peoples will still take the feat to craft.  Should still cost GP and XP, but the answer, if in REAL TIME, would work.

I also dont like the idea to do all the tedious combine, so a result icon with an amount of times and cash and ressources is plenty for my tradeskilling side.  And yes, I would most likely create items...as much as possible, since the rarity would mean it have a high value!

Of course adventuring is MUCH more profitable, but crafting is mostly done...offline in a such a system.

Quite easy to add.  Prolly not at start, but I see no reason to not add it after a time.  You may also be required some extra ''mark'' in order to make a ''NO TRADE'' items into a ''TRADABLE'' item.

Another solution would be to completely forbid all trades between characters and make a system similar to Living Grehawk.

There is no crafting. Says it on the faq on the ddo page.

They are trying to mimic a pnp D&D session minus the booze and bull....'in.  The city will be the world where you meet up with people then start your adventure.  It's different from the standard mmo build and probably won't be for everyone.

So does this mean the rules will be based on the PNP version too? If so that would be cool.

please if your a DnD noob with no interest in PNP then please do us all a favour and stay away from this game, its not for you

btw you dont want crafting in DDO...if its anything like PNP it would take you days or weeks of real time to enchant a weapon

hmm are you calling me a noob? That is a bit premature don't ya think.  I asked a simple question. I wanted to know how close this game would be to PNP version. AS I have been playing it for years. To me it would be nice if the game was as close to the PNP version as possible. It is something I have been looking forward to for some time.

Who are you to tell some one not to play this game just because they are new or have no interset in the PNP version. Seems like that is what the creators would want the new blood and the hardcore PNP gamers to mix it up and make an awesome game.  The only way I will stay away from this game is to avoid people like you.  Get a grip and stop trying to discourage people from playing a game. Maybe you are the one that should stay away sounds like you are one of the many jerks that play pnp and make things difficult for the party.

i don't think there will be stuff like crafting,,only because why would u want to craft what u can get from merch,,,nothin u could make would ever be better then the artifacts u could possibly come acrossed,,as for PvP,,i would rather see that space ingame go for something more construtive then give'in ppl ways to disrupt game play,,so many ppl leave the MMOs out now because of the ways they got PvP in their game,,all i can say,,,,i so hope that the makers of this is seeing that PvP drives away just as many players as it will bring and without it somethings just will run so much smoother then if it's here,,i also hope they r goin to have perma-death to,,maybe that will also keep some of the ppl that will be more of a negative to the game stay away
