Ok so the title isnt entirely descriptive.
I just got a new monitor thats 1440p. For some reason whenever i exit a game, turn the monitor off and back on, etc. It rearranges my icons slightly. Basically creates a 1 icon space in the middle of the rows.
Anyone know of a workaround or solution to fix this? Its getting rather annoying.

Lol... that's a weird one for a new resolution to cause.
But sorry, can't help you. I long ago got rid of my desktop icons and use the taskbar desktop toolbar instaed. I like a clean desktop

Yep, no icons.

Are you using Full Screen Mode? Even at the same resolution that can switch video modes on a monitor sometimes, and that causes issues.
Also, are you using nVidia's DSR? That can definitely have an impact on desktop icons.
I use fullscreen in all games. No i do not use DSR

That's probably it then - Fullscreen when Gsync does it's adaptive thing Windows sees it as a different resolution and rescales your desktop around.
I don't think Gsync works in Windowed mode now just to test that. But you could try a title in Borderless Windowed (or Fullscreen Windowed) and see if the icons jump after quitting that - I would be surprised if they did though since the desktop resolution isn't changing at all - but if they did then you know it's something apart from a resolution mode switch that I think is the cause. You might also be able to play around with the DPI settings -- if the icons scale just a bit higher or lower you may get them to stop juggling on the mode switch. Or try turning off "Align to Grid" for the desktop - but that could get messy in other ways.
I guess icon hijinks is worth a good mocking.
Check your display's desktop refresh rate and do the same in game. Altering refresh rates can have the same effects as changing resolutions. Your in game refresh rate should match your desktop settings to avoid video mode switching.
Running games in borderless windowed mode should not touch the display mode. Unfortunately some games don't have the option to use borderless windowed mode though. Some even don't let you pick a custom refresh rate while they force you to use some default value that doesn't match your desktop refresh rate.
I suppose your games still use your old display's refresh rates or Windows does it for some weird reasons.
Only issue is that his monitor is a GSync model - so the entire point of that is to alter the refresh rate, and that doesn't work in Windowed mode.
So i think i have it mostly figured out. So far, it seems to be related to turning the monitor on and off. So, i set my screen to shut off after 5 mnutes, and now even when i enter and exit games it doesnt seem to be doing it. Which is weird, it would make sense that it would do it when you turn it on and off, but not entering and exiting games, but so far ive been in and out of dota 2 and BF4 several times and no rearranging.
Gotta love windows sometimes.
