Nice game, but too grindy

ElikalElikal Member UncommonPosts: 7,912
Phew. When I bought FF14 for 10 Euro or so, I thought, wth, it won't be good anyway, but let's see. I never had played any Final Fantasy, so it was a bit a jump into cold water. To my surprise, I really liked it. I like the design, the looks, and the storiss.

However, as I reached level 39 with my character (Bard), I just feel like I hit a grind wall, where slowly but surely my patience is sipped away. In the early levels, the main story quest and the area quests kept along. There were the various grind quests, but it was managable. Now, I start to lack behind, and get too many "kill 5 of X" mindless bore.

It is a bit a pity. I really would like to know how the main story continues. But as it is, I must admit that the grind just keeps me off. There is just too much of that mindless "kill x amount of y" without rhyme or reason. :/

    Some like it some don't.

But XIV is one of the least grindy mmos on the market currently. Far less then WoW or any of the other mainstream themeparks. Everything is more or less handed to you in XIV, except vanity gear... that shit is a hellish grind.

There's no such thing as an MMORPG without grind.

Sounds like you just don't like games with questing as the primary form of gaining XP though.

FedEX quests - that's nothing. Google "relic weapon grind steps" to see how the real grind at end game looks like.

Your highest level combat class increased the amount of exp your other classes receive by 50% when you level them. So getting to cap makes it easier to level future classes. As for grind, to agree with what was said earlier, the term grind is subjective. You dont really quest grind in XIV after your first class is up and even before then you dont really have to. There's a few ways to approach leveling in this game such as "FATE Grinding" dungeon grind, leves or a combination of those. It also depends on what class you typically enjoy playing in an mmorpg. If bard feels stagnant you can try another class like rogue(ninja), blm, whm, w/e to change it up. You're not confined to level just one class up on a single character so it might be faster for you to pick a healer to level first so it goes by faster and then try bard again.

No offense Eli but it has far less grind than most MMOs out there, and I know this isn't your first rodeo. The story is far more rewarding too, stick it out and you'll not regret it.  I've never had an MMO story actually move me like this one.

A grind is not subjective, it's just repeating the same action over and over again. What is subjective is the player's threshold to repeating the same action over and over again before he gets bored (aka doesn't find it fun anymore).

FFXIV is all about repeating the same actions over and over again once you are done with the story and side quests.

From what I remember of FFXIV (I played a RRB release), the gameplay was pretty fun. From what I remember of FFXIV, the community was atrocious, that's why I left and never looked back. I'm almost tempted of coming back, but everything I've been reading tells me the community haven't changed.

My buddy just started a few months ago and just hit 50 and is not done with the 2.0 main scenerio yet.

Yes, you ARE doing something wrong.

BTW it's his first mmo ever and does NOT know what grind means nor did he grind at all lmao.

Until I have to dodge 200 lightning bolts in a row that strike every 2-3 minutes without being able to stop or get hit once, I will not be able to consider this game a grind outsie of the relic weapon.

It depends on the player - you can certainly play MMORPGs without grinding.

I mean you can just log in, stay in one place and chat with others - zero grind.

The grind is also highly subjective - some folks are happy killing 10000s of mobs in the same spot, some can't stand killing more than 10 of the same thing.

The grind only exists if you actually do it, and it varies from person to person

I consider bouncing from quest npc to npc extremely grindy because it's absolutely boring as hell to me. Regardless of how quickly you level, I can't stand it. Alas, most games give you very little to no xp for killing NPC's so that's out of the question. Just another example of how other perceive a grind.

I used to feel this way. Then I started reading the quests. I found I had much more fun doing the quests when I knew why I was doing them.

Well you could always do what I did ... buy someone game time in exchange for gil and buy the best gear, thus circumventing the endgame grind. But if its earlier levels then there is no hope. When the game first released I played from sun up to sun down for a month and STILL couldnt hit 50. It was grindy as hell but I didnt notice until I got towards the end. And if you think thats grindy, ho ho ... wait until the relic weapon quest. I havent even started it b/c I refuse to do that much useless grind. As someone else said vanity items are an entirely different beast, not even gonna touch that.

Me too. Which is why I've been playing FF14 off and on by not doing quests except main story quests. I just head out and kill monsters. I like the leves a lot. I just keep doing those.

But quests? Unless they are quests that are full blown story quests I just can't do them anymore. I avoid "!" like the plague in all its guises.

I'm sorry but no. Least grindy? You're talking about a game that let's one character play any class.. it's grindy by nature lol. You hevy to grind out level 30 on a job and then 15 on another and in between,  level up some other classes for cross abilities. I liked the game a lot, but if had to collect one more fucking log or compost thing I was gonna fucking scream. Then you'll run the same dungeon over and over and over and over lol.

I just don't agree the game isn't grindy. Good, but grindy as hell.

  • sagewisdomsagewisdom Member UncommonPosts: 87

I'm really starting to get the feeling that people conider playing a game that requires you to, you know, do stuff as grindy. I had to go to NPC to NPC for a story! Grind! I had to fight monsters in a row! I had to do a dungeon! Grind! I had to level! Grind! I had to make my character walk three steps! God damn it, this game is grindy as hell!

Seriously, what isn't a grind people?

  • ceratop001ceratop001 Member RarePosts: 1,594
I tried it but it felt cold and weird if that makes sense. Didn't inspire or intrigue me to continue. It just felt like an odd game that was well made.

    Maybe Tetris, or Pong.

Then again, moving those blocks and paddle can be tiresome, too.

I never do other quests than story and maybe grand company quests. I tend to level up just by doing dungeons

I'm a casual player who hates grinds. This is my progress in the game: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/character/7984895/

IDK what you're doing wrong. Also you can not get end game gear with gil. I dare say that's laughable.

This was the first "Grind" I experienced early on lol. I HATE IT !!

I stopped playing, but will probably come back for Heavensward.  The only part I found "grindy" was endgame.  That's the same with 99% of MMOs though lol. That's why I'm an altoholic :D

They fail to realize that that "grind" IS the game.  This . is . an . MMORPG!  Go play an FPS or MOBA if you don't want a grind.  These types of threads make me want to scream ... GET THE HELL OUT OF THE GENRE, YOUR GAME IS THATA WAY ---->

You have messed up this genre enough already.  It is a shambles because of your mentality of "too grindy," "too many quests," "no challenge," "no PvP this or that."  Go away and leave it be already!"

I have to disagree with you, games like swtor and tsw avoid the grind by either disguising the fed ex quests or by having less of them, Lotro has many fed ex quests but because of the lore you do not feel them so much. The first 15 lvls of ff14 were filled to the unhappy brim with fed ex quests just a nightmare

Exactly, last time i checked all you do is grind tokens, repeat old content ad nauseam for relics and spirit bond grind for materia.
