$35/month sub. The next big MMO?

Abuz0rAbuz0r Member UncommonPosts: 550

Every MMO released in 10 years has aimed to be cheaper yet comparable to WoW.  WoW is a $15/ mo game and it's worth every penny of it's $15/mo.  The reason we can't find games we like is because games aren't worth their subs, except for WoW.  The next game that finally is the 'wow killer' isn't going to be cheaper, it's going to be bigger, better and more expensive, and players are going to love paying every penny to be in the experience.

We all whine and moan about f2p, item malls, p2p, b2p... while the fact is a true first class MMO is worth every penny of it's sub.  Not some chinese garbage dressed up to satisfy a western audience, I mean a real MMO that leaves you feeling the way you felt the first time you watched 300 every time you log in.

Can a developer please aim to make a MMO of this calibur and quit giving us less than or equal to WoWs?

Thanks

Almost half are happy with the current quality of games and half would gladly pay extra for superior experience.

Is wow worth $15? What do they give you each month that makes it worth it?

lol .. you think people will pay $35 a month when they can find plenty of fun games for FREE?

And why would you think people still like "real MMO". I think they like the new broadened MMOs like MOBAs, instanced pvp games, and other types of online games. Just look at the numbers.

Yes, I'm looking at the numbers and I see 7 billion people and 0.00001% of them attracted in the products available out there. It's such a great success on all the devs/companies out there. I strongly hope they continue doing the same.

US+Canada = 350 mil population. Europe 740 mil, Japan + South Korea 180 mil, etc, etc, etc. I mean it seems the games are that much fun and addictive, that they are afraid to get involved in them.

The same people who cry about p2w are usually the ones that won't fork over any kind of monthly fee. I hate p2w personally, but getting my friends to play p2p games with me is like pulling teeth. People for the most part are braindead. I know guys who have spent upwards of 700 dollars a month on a f2p game. Then tell me they won't pay 15 bucks plus a box price for a p2p because they feel cheated. F2p does a superior job into tricking people out of their money. Why else would 95% of the games out there be f2p? You have literally no chance to get people to spend more. Maybe if they lessened the cost to 5 dollars a month with a 30-40 dollar box fee. For that kinda money though the game would probably be subpar.

Yea, I sure have benefited a lot out of the whales out there, but I have yet to open my wallet on a P2W game. It's simply not the type of future I want this genre to be headed toward so I'm not supporting that model. It's as simple as that. I'm just a passenger who enjoys the free products while I wait for that X game where I can finally happily spend every cent on.

I also still believe that 50 small fishes => 1 big whale.

and not enough of those 7B people are going to buy chemical film camera to keep Kodak afloat. Or Blackberry.

Just having a lot of people is not enough to have enough of a business. You do know that consumers have many choices for entertainment, right?

In fact, are you willing to bet your own career and money on the assumption that enough people will be willing to pay $35 a month for a SINGLE game? If so, go for it .. and prove me wrong. Otherwise, it is just a bunch of wild guesses that no sane devs will invest even a dime into.

I seriously don't think that product exists for any of us. We just have to find one with as few shortcomings as possible and hope for the best. At this rate I got a better chance of finding the holy grail before I find an mmorpg I can play for years without quitting.

    That is your problem.

I doubt most players want to just play a SINGLE game for years .. i bet they like a variety of shorter games. Hence, devs are not aiming to make very very long game (except may be WoW) just because it is much better to make many shorter games.

Maybe he's onto something though. What if we made the sub like 500 dollars a month instead. I wonder how many people would sub just to say they have or can. It's kinda like that one app on apple where people bought it just to say they're rich.

So the solution to fewer and fewer players paying a sub fee is to raise the sub fee.

    Brilliant!

With the f2p model there is a sizable portion of the user base who pays $50 or more per month. If its the best mmo ever to have existed, I can see people paying the amount of most new steam games every month for it.

I've never really cared much for wow. Played it for a few months during the first expansion. Enjoyed it, but the pull was gone when I cleared BT.

There is no way that a game where you have to pay over 400$ a year to play would be successful. The number of people that would play it would be so low that the people playing it would end up quitting because there is no one around.

Most people say they would pay for a subscription if the game was good enough, but thats just it: good enough is different for everyone. Some people who pay a subscription want to get something every single month they pay, some people want to just have a high quality game. The main issue is that no publisher is going to invest in a game that costs this much to maintain. If you want people to pay more then 15$ a month, they need to get a major content pach the size of an expansion; monthly. You can't just throw more money at a game and expect it to be higher quality all of a sudden. The more developers on a project can actually slow things down rather then speed things up. The game industry is also so volatile, especially in the MMO space, that no developer that is good enough to get paid that kind of money would consider working for a company who is charging their customers that much money.

Making a game like this would also require developers to finish months of content prior to the release of the game, not knowing how successful it is. This amount of content would be comparable to multiple expansions worth of content. So the initial investment would be astronomical.

EQ released their premium server, Stormhammer, where you paid like 50 dollars a month and there was constant GM support always on.  It was one of the most popular servers too.  Of course, this was 15 years ago and there were not that many games.

Make a great game, and plenty of people will gladly pay 15 dollars a month.  Make a bad game, and very few people will pay that price when they can get the same type of game free from at least 100 different developers.

Monthly fees don't bother me at all, I prefer them that way, but I'm cool with the other ways if done right, ESO's recent transition to b2p was done fantastically for example. But there are a ton of cheap a$$es out there, I always laugh when they complain about p2p then drop 10 times as much on a "f2p" game. The key is just finding the right model, I read an awesome post on a site one time that had probably the perfect payment model, and I don't understand why it hasn't been implemented anywhere. Basically people hate paying monthly because if for some reason they can't play for any period, their game time just drains away. Just have a model where you buy game time that is ACTUALLY game time, like every time you log in on a new day, you lose a day of the game time you bought. I read a commenter with this idea once and I thought it was genius, I think it would make both p2p and f2p fans happy, and it would provide the consistent money needed to keep updating the game without an annoying cash shop.

Why did you spell that like it was Japanese pretend English rather than the correct spelling?

'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.

If a game had the following I would pay up to $50/month for a sub

    • Solid PvE
    • Solid PvP
    • Guild Focused Endgame
    • Strong Economy
    • Horizontal Progress in terms of gear
    • Indept Stat System
    • Involves more to combat then button mashing to get maximum dps. (Crowd control, hate control, mob positing ect)
    • Good Crafting and Gathering
    • Large Meaningful Openworld (Not just for leveling)
    • Solid Mix of Instance and Non-instance endgame
    • Long Lasting Content (aka content that  has a purpose for more then 1 expansion/patch)
    • More content then is possible to complete before a new expansion comes (Endless content). THis mean have enough content in the game in 1 expansion to keep someone playing 40+hrs a week busy, not counting PvP and Alt leveling
    • There is no cash shop period. Not even a vanity only cashshop.

To say the least.... no themepark mmo has ever came close to the above, so in my opinion most mmos that are subs are not worth subs. The older mmos that were have been dumbed down to the point of not being worth subs.

WoW in my opinion does not have enough relevant content to be worth $15/month, XIV is in the same boat. Polish wise and such they are easily worth it.

I do not see any themepark mmo being able to release enough content to be worth a sub. They will either need a development staff of 600 ppl or they will have to risk pissing off the casuals and make content that takes more then a few hours to do night. Both of these situations I do not see happening.

This also goes both ways. The game has to be so much better then it's competition due to the price point. Most people would be willing to pay 15$ for a game that is good vs a game that is 35$ that is great.

One of the main reasons the subscription model is not nearly as prevalent is due to the sheer number of titles that are free and offer similar content. So the game would have to beat other games that people don't even pay monthly in terms of value. Free is hard to beat. It doesn't really matter how high quality the game is at a certain point. If the game is solid and it is free; it is going to be a huge competitor to a game that costs money monthly.

I know personally I would gladly play a free game over a subscription based game that is slightly lower quality if it means I don't have to pay for a subscription.

Also "More content then is possible to complete before a new expansion comes (Endless content)"

This does not exist and never has really. I am sorry, but the vast majority of people who play games have full times jobs/school. For a lot of those people, there are plenty of games out there that at least feel like they get endless content. If you want a game with a hardcore stat grind those do exist and will continue to exist; but they will also be very niche and chances are, not very successful.

I don't get why people think that more people means that more content comes out faster either. That is just not the case at all. Blizzard is a massive company with thousands of people and they put out content slower then other games without subscriptions and with subscriptions a like.

The irony is, someone claiming they would pay 50$ a month for a game without a cash shop would probably end up paying far more then any game with a cash shop in just a couple of months.

This wasn't meant to be some kind of troll post.  I'm saying I want a $35/mo quality game.  I'm bored with the 10s and 15s.  WoW is old and worn out for me, I want something new and fun and unique.  I want to start an adventure that can't be finished, I want a real rpg experience again where I feel immersed.

If that was the sub I would never consider playing it. Regardless of what it is.
