After 16 years, I have learned how to finally enjoy a MMORPG

We all know the "M" in MMORPG stands for Multiplayer...and you might be surprised, but I used to make fun of a friend of mine who played every MMORPG "solo".

I would say the same exact thing, i.e. "The game was designed for MP, why solo?".

    Because....players ruin games....not all players....but many...they are a very vocal crowd.

Yes, it is VERY sad and LAME that to enjoy a MMORPG these days, you have to eliminate every player other than the ones YOU KNOW in RL or have made friends with and trust over the years.

    But guess what? It works!

How many times must we put up with potty talking WoW kiddies who spread their immaturity across every F2P game as their parents refuse to pay for sub games and whose parents refuse to fund their WoW time?

I am not their baby sitter.

Of course these kiddies grow up and get even worse.

Cheaters, exploiters, trollers, griefers and also those players who get to max level in 2 weeks or less and then troll and spam chat and forums with their "I am bored...." "nothing to do". All of them ruin games.

Re-read my original post about 'Age of Conan".

First off, i am not a baby sitter, I do not want to and nor do any of us have to deal with snot nosed spoiled kiddies and in many cases the annoying grown ups they turn into.

Ok, so you have lag, well I DONT so stop spamming chat with 'llllaaaaggggg".

Instead "Get Broadband and/or upgrade your PC" , as your lag is not my problem.

If you read this thread it gets really funny how some people are so offended that we choose to IGNORE them.

They want attention, and thats why they ruin games and spoil immersion, as they want you to respond.

Thus, I and many chose a long time ago to keep the "RPG" in MMORPG and thus turn off chat channels like General etc, or entirely, no longer PUG.

We do not want anything to ruin how we get immersed in an MMO-RPG.

For those who insist on flooding our ears with grief in game and out; well then dont read our posts or respond to them.

We are not here to entertain you or please you, we voice an opinion and if you dont agree or like it thats fine, just dont troll us  the way you do in game.

The ignore and block functions in games and in forums are a wonderful thing, that increases and maintains immersion.

I don't let their behaviour touch me. I don't shut down chat, because I don't believe in throwing out the baby with the bathwater and there are a lot of good people that use it, and I PUG a lot of the time.

My personal way of finally learning to enjoy these games after years was to stop chasing hype and reappraise what it was that I wanted from them.

I stopped playing every new title that came out, game hopping from one shallow disposable title to the next just because they had a gimmick or two or had pretty graphics. I accepted that the clumsy greedy F2P monetisation of the market would only ever annoy me.

I went back to what I first loved in the genre, because I enjoyed that model of game for very real reasons. Instead of searching for the next big thing I rediscovered what had originally brought me into this type of gaming in the first place.

What i will ask you though is how is your post here any different from those 'kiddies'? I mean, you are complaining about them complaining and sharing your problems with us, even as you complain about them sharing their problems with you? Is the only difference that you choose a different place to post your overwhelmingly negative complaining?

I think the saying, "You're not in traffic, you ARE traffic" might apply here.

Anyone else wish the OP's first line was 'Or "how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb"

    Amen brother! Preach it!

Disabling chat is huge or you'll end up getting 'meta'd' out of your enjoyment. Don't raid, don't group, at least not with random people, far more often then not the experience is bad. Just take in at your own pace and enjoy.

Because the core design and play systems of them are usually pretty crappy, and I have yet to play one of them that does personal story well (according to my personal standard). At best, solo, I find modern mmorpgs bland virtual knitting simulators that just offer bland 'busy work' to those that just want to go through the motions for folks that just want to turn their brain off for a while.

So, would I buy a game such as GW2 or SWTOR if they were sold as solo games..? Lord, no.

For me, it's people that elevates the genre.

What if there is one MMO that is also a good single player game .. would you buy it as a single player game then?

In fact, marvel heroes fit that description for many. You can totally play it as a single player game ... and it is fun for many. Warframe is a bit like that too.

This is a huge problem with our genre atm.  There's thousands of other single player games out there for these folks, instead our genre is slowly being ruined, because they complain they can't solo 100% of the time in ours.

They are ruining "your" genre (please allow me to laugh at this already) because bashing mobs in a group/raid is now optional instead of being forced?

    Please, gimme a break.

    Exactly.

What frightens me is how fast and easy it is for people to invalidate the experience of others when it doesn't fit their own bias.

The OP found a way to have more fun, that's the whole point of gaming. Luckily there are plenty of options for all us.

    As to the OP;

There is a lot to enjoy with LOTRO, not least of which is the mature community. I often turn off general chat in most games I play except for Lotro.

A US Army ('Just Cause') Vet and MMORPG Native formerly of Trinsic, Norath and Dereth. Currently playing LOTRO.

Potentially.... I haven't tried those games. I would have to to judge if they worked in that way. But I also don't enjoy cash shops, so that's an issue as well for me.

Oh, no... Wait I did try Marvel Heroes... I wasn't that into it's Diablo style thing really. I was always a Baldur's Gate guy even when that was at it's peak.

But you cannot deny many are into Diablo style of things .. right?

And you have NOTHING against MMOs that are also good single player game. The fact that you have not found one for yourself does not mean that they don't exist .. or they don't exist for others.

I love Lotro even though I stopped playing it ; years ago before it went free to play. To this day no other mmorpg has captured my imagination like that game has. The landscape and story line are just great.  I have yet to play another mmorpg that I can safely say rivals it. Maybe I will go back too lol ; since every mmorpg on the market totally sucks.

I hated playing Marvel Heroes solo. It bored the arse off me. I am in no position to say if others like it solo, especially if it is their style of game, but saying what others like hasn't been what I have been doing here.

I have yet to play a MMORPG that is also a good solo player game by my standards. That's my only position here. Was Marvel a good solo game for me? No, it was not. Otherwise I would still be playing it, obviously. Might others like playing is solo? Sure... Why not? I thought it was crap though. It pretty much defined the braindead virtual 'busy work' knitting simulator that I was describing earlier, at least to me.

I have not once in this thread dictated what 'exists for others'. I have solely spoken about my preferences.

I think that you're working way too hard to try and catch me out for some reason when all I have done is express what works and doesn't work for me.

Are you feeling threatened or something?

That is not the point though.

The point is ... *if* you find a MMORPG that is also a good solo game by YOUR standard ... will you play it as a single player game?

And certainly you have nothing against others who do so, right?

I am not sure how to keep saying it... I have nothing against what others like. I have been simply stating what I like.

It still seems like you are working very hard to score some points over something...

If I find a MMORPG that, by my standard, is a great single player game, then sure, bring it on. But I have been around a good time and tried more than a few games and none have. So, what do you suggest? Because your Marvel Heroes thing was a bit of a wash out for me.

But i am curious and want to make sure that you will play a good single player game, even if that is in the guise of a MMO ... because if you don't .. something is weird about your logic.

But since you agree .. all is good.

    Good lord...

What's weird with the logic of I have never, in 16 years, played a MMORPG that was a good and fun game to me when playing solo?

This exchange is honestly a bit like playing chess with a pigeon.
