Conspiracy Theory - is SWTOR 2 coming? Some say yes the signs point to it

JonBonJawaJonBonJawa Member UncommonPosts: 489

Let´s discuss this based on some facts:

1. Bioware wants everyone to finish up their class stories, if you dump all your old content and go for 12 x XP boosts, there must be some strategy behind, and it´s probably not just ´buy our DLC´ because when you´re done, you´re done with it and the endgame is good but not THAT amazing, like every other endgame in any other MMO it´s mostly a gear grind.

2. There was this guy on Reddit who over 1,5 years ago made a post about an alleged SWTOR 2, he predicted lots of stuff and was initially laughed at, but since big parts of it came true with the Revan expansion, the new race, and with Forged Alliance, and even Lord Vitiate playing a vital role, people start to believe he was right. There was none of this even on the horizon when he made this post so many are scratching their heads if he actually was onto something

spoilers, includes an alleged " ending " of SWTOR and to each class story so don´t read it if you don´t want spoilers

here the original post, look at the date, way before even the Revan expansion announcement

http://www.reddit.com/r/swtor/comments/26jrrf/the_future_of_swtor/

Now what do you think, is SWTOR 2 happening? WIll they actually make a new SWTOR in Frostbite engine with all the cool stuff that is impossible in SWTOR ?

Why would it make sense?

1. With the new movies EA will milk the hell out of the Star Wars license as long as they have it, and that´s perfectly fine.

2. More Star Wars games is always good.

3. There can be more than one Star Wars MMO, there is no universal rule that only one MMO can exist for an IP

4. They wouldn´t shut down SWTOR after the finale and let it even run alongside SWTOR 2 - makes perfect sense. It would be just put into maintenance mode, not receiving new content - why not. It can still make some money until 2020+

It makes sense, with the new movies coming out all they have to do is make a kick starter for it and promise a bunch of stuff and people will start throwing their money at them.

It would have to completely different from SWTOR1 or else you run the risk of alienating your core playerbase.  The ideal is to bring in new faces not split already existing ones up into 2 games.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

The day I see a big publisher like EA doing a Kickstarter, I´m out, lol

And I love Kickstarter, backed dozens of things, games, comic books, etc.

EA making a new Star wars MMO isn't that strange but I doubt that would make a sequal to TOR.

For one thing is TOR actually making more money now than ever besides the first 2 months after launch. They would just spend a lot of money on taking players from themselves.

Now, making a Star Wars MMO set during the rebillion or in the new movies, that have far more potential. Then you could get new players who enjoy Star wars but ain't TOR fans. Of course would a game like that have to be rather different from TOR to attract it's own players.

What's speaking against it is more the fact that EA and other larger Western publisher (besides possibly Microsoft/Undead labs) have zero announced MMOs right now but that would actually be a good thing for a new Western AAA MMO, not much competition besides from indie and kickstarter MMOs today.

But TOR 2? Just don't see that happening for the next 10 years.

I want to see a star wars game similar skyrim or the witcher 3.  An MMO would be fine as long as its more or less open world kinda like ESO.   I would definitely like to be able to be different chars or some sort of skill tree.. My main problem with SWTOR was that is seemed pretty confined.  Some of the worlds you spent your whole time on a ship and had to run back and forth and fight the same mobs over and over.  SWTOR took forever to make so I highly doubt a SWTOR II is in the near future...

The strategy behind the 12x Class XP is a very simple one... get money from those who wouldn't spend any otherwise. Who cares if they leave again afterwards when they've finished the stories? It's still money they wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

When they first ran the promotion as part of the Shadow of Revan pre-order it turned out to be a huge success for them, which brought a lot of people back for the duration.

Heck, just browse through this site and read some of the threads on TOR, there's tons of people who enjoy the game's Class Story content, but who can't be bothered to wade through all the "filler" for the umpteenth time just to progress their Class stories.

The simplest explanation is usually the correct one. And in this case it's that they want more revenue.

Too bad the internet as we know it cannot handle such a thing.

For one we'd have to have no latency and no flux to that latency. For two you'd probably want a client - host relationship where the host is server side.  How FF XIV did it for instance.  Why?  Error checking would be far more important on a game where all damage is dictated by hit boxes.  Lets look at CoD.  If you lag for even a split second you can end up dying because your character was not where he should have been, combine that with an MMO architecture and you start to have real issues with maintaining synchronicity in game play.

    Maybe in 20 years.

Stupid internet being made piece meal is to blame for all the first world problems.

If they decide to make another one, then I sure hope they'll do one like SWG.

I'd also hope they'd abandon their design for TOR and return to a more free-form, sandboxy world like SWG, but I also realize that's probably not going to happen. Didn't the developers make the claim during release that TOR was going to be KOTOR 3, 4, 5 and onwards? What happened to that commitment?

Well hopefully Bioware learned from their last launch that they better design this on a F2P model from the start.

Ok, let me take my crystal ball then.

Yes, there, I see them. There definately will be more star wars games. People love star wars. There is a lot of money to make with it.

But they more look like a MOBA, oh and even a TCG and lots of little mobile games. Many of those, easy to create, low investment, high profit, next to no risk.

I can't see any Star Wars MMORPG though. There are is already one, even two if you consider SWGemu. Why start a project which costs muliplte hundred millions, takes many many years time with the risk that it will flop and competes with already exisiting MMORPGs for the same IP ?

The movies are coming out now. To use that hype the games must be released this year, next year latest. Not in 5 years.

Hmmm, ok, might be that my crystal ball is not working but it sounds much more plausible to me than your wishful thinking OP.

WTB a diablo-ish "Action" MMORPG in the Star Wars universe. Now that is something that would interest me.

Are you talking about SW2 as EQ2 is to EQ or as ARR is to FFXIV?

I'm very skeptical about the first but the second one could easily happen.

It couldn't possibly be worse than the first one so they should do it. Why anyone would actually stay with SWTOR if there was a replacement is inexplicable to me. It would have be simple fear of change, or not wanting to have wasted all those dollars gambled in SWTOR. EA could just give them stuff in the new game and that would be a good way to kick the old eyesore off the server farm while making money on the influx of players.

Back when SWTOR was still subscription based and tanking hard:

    1) The F2P conversion is still on the way but is more to stop the bleeding, they have no idea at this time how successful the model will be yet.

    2) They've gotten wind of new Star Wars movies in the works which will bring a lot of hype -BUT- a lot of those fans, particularly those who haven't played KOTOR, have no tie into Revan or the SWTOR universe.  They will likely want to play in the current movie setting rather than in some dingy ancient time with characters they have no connection with.

    3) It's becoming clear even after spending tens of millions of dollars on it SWTOR is still hamstrung by it's choice of engine and always will be.

So work begins on new Star Wars MMO... I could see it happening.

Eh... who am I kidding.  This is EA we're talking about.  They'll likely just use the movies to squeeze the the last little bits of life out of SWTOR with new cash shop mounts and costumes.

  • H0urg1assH0urg1ass Member EpicPosts: 2,380

From EA?  Naw.  I don't believe it at all.  If that were true, then the last expansion would have never been released because they'd be too busy coding the new game.  If they were building a new game, then they'd want to drop it by this December.  That's a hell of a tall order considering the development time of most MMO's is five years or more.

As much as I want this game to die and go away, it's one of the strongest MMO's on the market in population and earnings.  We're at a point where the on-rails, hand holding, minimal thinking MMO's are the ones that pull in the most money.  It's really really sad, but true.

I want a skill based open world(s) SW game with a deep and complicated crafting system, true loss PVP to fuel the economy and dozens of worlds to explore including some on the fringes of space that can be conquered and ruled by player guilds.  Essentially EVE Online with human Avatars set in the SW universe.
