Indeed. Things get very much more interesting, complex, and overall better every 2 - 3 week's patches.

Just get some guidance from a friendly player in game, a playstyle matching Venture Company, or the Path Finder University.  The last one there is set up specifically to help new players. I hear that they are doing a great job.

 

You will save a great deal of time with a little advice and help.
