You don't have to hear anything, you can see it with your eyes. All you have to do is make a seconds long search on youtube and you'll be flooded with alpha version game play videos regarding almost every aspect of the game, various developers explaing their part in SC with visual presentations, you can even have a tour of their newly acquired offices in Frankfurt Germany.  Because that's exactly what money grabbers do, they spend cash adding overseas development teams to a already very big core team.

For the first time ever a creator shows and explains to the public and hence to his backers every step off the development process by doing weekly updates. Because that's exactly what money grabbers do.

Depends on your definition of "money grabbing".

Charging for every single playable asset in the game for years on end ("until the game is released and then we'll see") is a pretty sound definition of "money grabbing".

I don't think I've ever seen another game charge real money for pretty much EVERYTHING in the game before.

And yet... What does Chris Roberts have to show for it? (put down the kool-aid: are you saying Arena Commander is the Alpha version of Star Citizen? I always thought it was "simulator" mini-game: something to keep the fans occupied while the real game is being worked on.)

It's a bit of an impossible situation to me; one of those things I'll probably never fully understand.

A couple other things in this thread I wanted to respond to:

Something that seems to have gone largely unaddressed is what brought the OP here to begin with: someone showing up in his stream chat advertising the campaign. I can imagine this would be incredibly distracting and annoying - doubly so for a game that's not even out yet. I've had similar things happen, where evangelists show up in places not affiliated with this project and begin saying things like "man, I can't wait for Star Citizen!". I pretty much just ignore them, as it's important for me to recognize my own bias against this project in its current state. However, I would be interested in learning more about the incident the OP mentions: a link to the stream if it was recorded, perhaps.

Second, there was a flash game mentioned in this thread, which Erillion wrote was no closer to AC than Galaga. I don't think that's really fair; Galaga is a 2d top scrolling shooter. The flash game linked to is a 3d wireframe space arena with upgradable guns and collectable missiles that also has some contemporary tropes associated with it (the splash tips, etc.)

Arena Commander is more or less a 3d multiplayer space arena shooter. That really is what fans have dropped 80 million on so far, unless you count the Murray Cup.

    This is pure 100% BULLSHIT

The game is a) not in BETA

    b) You can´t "win" an "invite"

this is 100% made up bullshit like many other astroturf hate threads and 4 pages of replies based on a nonsensical made up "user experience", created for the sole purpose we all know all too well by now.

    @op...

I believe you were mislead a bit on the 60 bucks because if i remember right,i thought something similar but no money was actually needed.

It is the sneaky way they presented that free alpha beta whatever they called it ,i don't remember.I was pissed just the same but then kept looking and eventually i found how  to actually get in game free.

You din't miss anything at all,imo it was actually a bad decision to allow a free look at basically nothing. You got to load into a hangar,a decent looking hangar but nothing elaborate. Then outside the space and movement of your ship was lol,if i remember right, most of the stuff had no textures yet.I thought how can you spend 4-6 months and want to show off what you have accomplished to potential future players and be missing textures? You SHOULD especially with the kind of money they have,a TEAM that means various people all working on various aspects of the game.

Even the landing pads or whatever they are were copy/pasted so they only made one and it was a VERY simple pad that would take 1 person at most one day to make, likely only 2 hours.SO  imo the hangar took the most work ,overall it looked like a small group of people prepared that Alpha and with less than 1 month of work.

So again imo these guys are milking money from naive gamer's.They have spent 90+% of their resources making PICTURES of ships,NOT completed ships, just pictures and selling them.Space can EASILY be auto generated, the few assets to put into space are again easy work, not much investment there,so yes they are just running a cash shop more than making a game.Expect them to milk the picture sales for a very long time. You also need to realize that these ships are instanced loaded,so yes you are still buying pictures and then an instance cockpit/hull.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Folks you can argue all you want.  But the fact is Star Citizen is happening and beta will go live sometime next year.  Also take a look at the YouTube trailer video I posted on the game and I can tell you from first hand experience that 90% of it is actual in game footage since I am a backer there and I am currently testing it.

here you can see some steps about the process of making one of the pictures you're refering to.

here you can se one of these pictures. It's not quite ready yet as it requires a tad more photoshopping.

and one more. There is quite more of these.

Note: pay attention when various ship door or hatches open. See the loading screens? They raised instancing to a whole new level.

Since so many are determined to prove I am wrong why don't you refer them to these videos on YouTube which will tell them more about how the game is going since they are posted weekly on YouTube and their website.  Unless you all are afraid that  they might learn the actual truth you all are trying to hide from them.

Please spare me the hand-wavium in action.  "The actual truth" is that this game was initially promised out in November 2014, 6 months ago...

"The actual truth" is not at all what I'm "afraid" of learning from the Around the 'Verse webcast (do you really believe the things you are typing?*).  That strikes me as a convenient party line, though.

My relationship to this project can be succinctly caricatured by the following:

    Enough said.

Since when is an ESTIMATED delivery posted while the project was still in the early crowdfunding stages a promise for release in a given date ?

The game displayed on the kickstarter page you linked is nowhere near in scope compared to the game in development today as the project due to the phenomenal fund income has grown exponentialy.

Chris Roberts made it quite clear that one of the main resons for the public funding was the fact that he wouldn't be bound by a publishers strict time table regarding release dates. He spoke about how Microsoft forced him to release Freelancer and although it was an excellent game it was not what he had envisioned. I won't go through this process again, he stated in an interview.

Also, adding "enough said" to a post doesn't really add vilidity to ones arguments.

    *Sigh*

People never stop finding reasons to be outraged over something. I genuinely feel bad for companies today with consumers like the OP that can't be bothered to actually investigate things before they take action.

That's really all I have to say.

Don't get it twisted. They should pay us to test the game and find the bugs etc etc. Just because this pay to play seems to be the going method doesn't make it right. Fanbois are cool but a lot of you are failing to recognize when somebody is using you.

Don't know the others, but I "pledged" (Or preordered if that word applies) for a game in development paying $40 when the final price would be nearly $60. While I wait to the Gold version, I can test the alpha (Or play it as it's not too bugged). Not a bad deal.

Yeah, you can spend more, but that's not mandatory. The minimum for get the full game (when it's ready) was $20. Maybe for Gamescom or the Anniversary they put a similar price again. That's not a bad price :-)
