Well I guess it all depends on how you play. Also it depends on what you consider to be an mmorpg. To me if you play with a Massive amount of people on the same title, and the game allows you to assume and progress a character through playing a role, than you are playing an mmorpg. I don't know of any titles currently that are listed as an mmorpg that don't allow you to do this.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Clever. Another veiled "no real MMORPG has been made in the last decade" thread. /slowclap

Really? If you truly followed MMORPGs you'd know that Tree of Savior is due soon. If that isn't an MMORPG then I don't know what is.

Why would AAA devs invest into something that has zero return? As long as there is no money to justify the cost it won't be made - rudimentary, no?

I didn't say they will. I said "there is little AAA development". Isn't that exactly what you said?

Hmm, I sort of agree with you but I understand where the OP is coming from.  So I decided to do a little list I looked at the "Game List" on this forum and decided to look at games released since the 1st of June 2014.

After deleting games with a generic release date like "2014" you have 64 games listed.

    But these are:

    • RPG 22
    • MOBA 3
    • MMORTS 3
    • CORPG 1
    • MMOFPS 1
    • Action RPG 19
Leaving 15 listed as "MMORPG" only two of which have any rating at all: Wildstar and ArcheAge. On further checking three had not been released, one had failed, one was an ARPG, one was for Android and four were clearly not MMORPGs.

This leaves a total of four in the last year.

PS Oh and WIldstar and ArcheAge both seem headed towards server merges and declining populations and the other two are obscure with very small populations.

The face of gaming can change, look at how Kickstarter and Steam have changed gaming. But will we see a MMO that will put RPG back into the title? I doubt that will be anytime soon.

That hope seems a little forlorn.  Not to say it cannot happen but at the moment I understand the state of play is to produce a good internal alpha and then seek funding.  If they do not find a big backer it may well fold.

    Forlorn Hope:

In the days of muzzle-loading muskets, the term was most frequently used to refer to the first wave of soldiers attacking a breach in defences during a siege. It was likely that most members of the forlorn hope would be killed or wounded. The intention was that some would survive long enough to seize a foothold that could be reinforced, or at least that a second wave with better prospects could be sent in while the defenders were reloading or engaged in mopping up the remnants of the first wave.

In French this was called Les Enfants Perdus or The Lost Children, and in Dutch verloren hoop, literally "lost troop".  The Dutch is probably the original.

Strangely all three seem to apply to the happy campers at Visionary Realms, Inc.

I translate that title as "when will someone make a game just like {x}"?

You've already played {x}. The genre only moves on or improves by asking for {y}.

OP probably meant that there is lack (in his opinion) of role-playing games.

Well....there is as much RP as one wishes to create, there are communities with role play.

And no, mmorpg genre is not dying, decaying, rolling to its doom, mmorpg genre does not need to re-emerge.

There has only been one good one in the last 15 years,FFXI and even that game went south.Tons and tons of linear questing games we definitely don't need another game of chasing yellow markers and every player following the same path.

An online mmorpg is meant to accomplish two things,to present an online world that interacts with ALL players,NOT instances. It is also designed to create YOUR OWN role playing path, not one laid out by following yellow markers over npc heads. That nonsense becomes a game of unlocking yellow markers and NOT Role playing, quest driven xp games are imo the ANTI mmorpg.

So we see tons of hand holding, tons of mechanics togain levels EASILY ,making them meaningless.SO the whole focus of this genre has been pvp and end game, neither of which have anything to do with MMO or RPG,sad lazy ass noob designs. We have so many of these, they might as well all be made in Asian on a printing press, just add in a different title name.

How long to wait?Wow a VERY long time since Square has proven it no longer wants to follow the path of vanilla FFXI.You might think ok,it's been 15 years, maybe someone is DUE to pop out with a solid in depth non linear game,i highly doubt as all i see  is cheaper and cheaper games ,like Moba's,card games, cheap browser games, early access, zombie susrvival,Kerbal Space program type projects, just a lot of crap,NOBODY is aiming for Triple A development.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Actually... "verloren hoop*" in Dutch literally translates to "lost (aka forlorn) hope" in English, it's why "forlorn hope" sounds so similar to it. So you're likely correct that the Dutch version is the original one. (or at least the version that inspired the English term) image

I don't think that'll be Pantheon though. We're likely going to see a lot of Asian ports making the transition overseas now that Western developers have deemed MMORPGs too expensive to make and seem determined to focus on MOBAs instead.

ArcheAge, Blade and Soul, Black Desert... and more will likely follow in the coming years.

    * It can also translate to "lost bunch/heap", where you probably got "lost troop" from, but the first seems more likely to me given the English version.

Because most players just don't care to RP. Modern MMOs (even old ones like EQ) are multiple player hack-n-slash & progression games, not real RP games.

If you want story driven RP games, there are plenty of good single-players ones .. just because devs can script RPing into the game. I suppose MMOs can do that do if there is enough scripting or the dev treat them like single player game enough.

Many people are fed up with current games but fortunately some western developers are fed up with them too and are genuinely attempting to make new and very different triple AAA games as we speak. The MMORPG genre will re-emerge in 2017-2020.

Fortunately, the Steam Summer Sale will be here within a week, so there will be plenty of things to make up for the fact that the MMORPG space is currently dead.

There have been many, many more good-great single player and co-op games to come out in the last several years, which makes the crap MMOs that developers have been shoveling out for years only look worse.

On the single player PC side we have had Wasteland 2 and Pillars of Eternity, on the MMORPG side, there has been nothing to come close to the quality, creativity or fun of either of those games in some years.

So, the MMORPG industry can burn for all I care, if they want to continue to put out garbage. (Or import garbage.)

Yeah, the best course of action for now is to enjoy games like Pillars of Eternity, while keeping track of innovative MMORPG projects like Revival.

Actually while "hoop" in Dutch can be translated as hope,  "Verloren hoop" translates as "lost troop", the word  'hoop' is a homograph. It is a question of context and in a military context the translation is clear and well documented in that context.

The transition from the Dutch 'verloren hoop' to the English 'forlorn hope' is also well documented as an example of folk etymology.

To get back to the folks at Visionary Realms, a good many have already fallen, and been replaced.  The current team works on in the hope of making an enticing alpha and finding a backer with deep pockets. As you say Western developers seem to think MMORPGs are too expensive to make so the prospect of that backer seems to be a desperate hope, that (in my eyes at least) makes the members of the team part of a 'forlorn hope', of course if they succeed they will prosper (as did the surviving members of a 'forlorn hope').

You mean MOBAs, card games and shooter like what Blizz is developing?

Or like the Japanese companies all going to mobile (even Nintendo is talking about that)?

In fact, i don't even mind people putting their hard earned cash into KS .. what i view as buying wishful thinking. Not only there is a slim chance that some day i may have actual games to look at, it make good fun calling them out too.

Reemerging implies that it actually emerged at some point.

Since it didnt, your question is nonsense, and only VALID one is:

    When will mmoRPG FINALLY EMERGE.
