LF Well Populated/Sustainable Gear Grind MMO

FuryVFuryV Member UncommonPosts: 515

Been playing GW2, got alts, got all ascended armor etc. I'm looking to go back to a WoW style gear grind game where I can continually increase my character's power and improve their gear/weapons once at max level.  I installed ESO but then realised there isn't really a 'gear grind' as such.  You get to VR14, get your max gear and then there's no other way to improve your character except for the champion system.

I don't really know what's popular out there at the moment which fits this criteria apart from WoW, but I don't wanna go back there really.  I'd like the game to have a sustainable future as I don't wanna start a new character, begin improving them etc only to find there is nobody playing in a few months.

Also, F2P or Buy to Play is much preferred for me at the moment.

Many thanks guys.

You might give Wildstar a try.  You can pick it up for $20 currently and in the fall its going F2P.  If you sub from now to F2P you get 4 months of premium free when it converts.  Its like paying for 4 months and getting 8.

Tera is another option but the questing is boring.

I have Wildstar already but unsubbed several months back.  I reinstalled it a few weeks ago using my 10 day free trial and it seemed there was hardly anybody around at all.  Considering all the population issues I've been reading about recently as well, it doesn't really fit my 'sustainable' option.  Possibly will in the future though, we'll see.

You mentioned TERA.  Is it F2P or will I have to buy the game?  If F2P, how are the restrictions?  And finally, how is the population at this point, as it came out several years ago.  I hope you can understand my population concerns when it comes to choosing an MMO, as I'd love to be able to play with other players a lot.

You can always try Tera.  It's f2p, and you have access to everything.  The combat system is very different than GW2 or tab-target though, and it's make-or-break for a lot of people.  Right now the population is booming because of their recent promotion on steam.  They are actually opening a new server in several days.  It's got end-game raids for gear grind also.

You can also try Tera until Wildstar becomes f2p this fall.  If not Tera, there's always Rift, or older MMOs that came out before ESO, GW2, or TSW.

New server opening soon in TERA, so good time to start.

Tera is F2P like ^ said, it is arguably currently one of the top 3 most played asian MMOs, with the Steam launch even more people are playing. HOWEVER as for gear grinding, why not try out Path of Exile?

    That's great, thank you guys.

I'll give TERA a shot!  Just a couple final questions, how are the F2P restrictions, is it generally worth subbing if you enjoy the game and are there expansions included in the F2P or will I need to buy them separately?

From what i know so far, there are no restrictions to access things.  The expansions are free.  Their cash shop sells costumes, account services, etc.  You might want to watch some youtube videos to get a better idea before downloading.

Yeah, just looked at the F2P restrictions. They're not too bad to be honest.

The only thing is, I'm gonna be playing on an EU server as I live in the UK.  So I'll be going with Gameforge instead of EnMasse.  Any difference?

Big difference.  A good many of EU/Gameforge players have already transferred to NA/EnMasse, and many more are eager to do so but they are hesitant because they fear their FPS will suffer.  I'm not big on end game gear grinds but I wish I was because I really like Tera.  Tera end game players are pretty hard core with  the end game gear grind.  If you like gear grind, you will love Tera.
