What does an old box Key provide?

I've been playing Defiance now for the last week and really enjoy it  (it's a nice change of pace from some of the other Mmorpgs I've played).  Anyway, I'm thinking about picking up an old (but new) box edition for the 30 day key for $9.  

What would the key provide in the now f2p environment and would it be worth the $9?
