Crafting excluded (though i'm very excited about the crafting), there seems to be a lot of promise in the "games within the game" idea.
Most interesting is the mentioned card game being made up by Jhyrryl... if only because a great card game with lots of strategical depth has near endless replayability in itself. Will it be a MTG type game, where you can collect cards? Or a traditional game based on suits and numbers? Gambling?
I also like the idea of "in character" games... because it gives reasons for the characters to socialize and/or hang out in taverns. In many games, the tavern has simply become another utility; i think games could help make them more lively places, where people want to spend time.

First off, I think the in-game card playing is a GREAT idea. I hope it will be a collectible type game though, so you can improve your chances of winning by buying rare cards or questing for them. Also using the already mentioned crafting weapon upgrade system for cards could have some serious potentional. To find rare cards, then level them up to be even better through play or questing would be sweet. Also for really rare cards it might be interesting to have a number shown of how many cards of its kind exist in the game. This card game could really fit in well with the fluid world that HJ is going to be. New cards could be created as time goes by and such. Good luck with all this Jhyrryl! Can't wait to see what you come up with.
I'm actually sick of all the card games found in games.
No, really. Once Magic came out (which I am rather fond of and still play...with an evil One Land Charbelcher deck), everyone's tried to copy it, and every video game has tried to put some stupid little card game in their game as well. It's just...retarded.
Then there's the games that USE a card system to play the game (Kingdom Hearts II, MGS:A). That's just sickening.
If there's going to be a card game in the game, let it be some sort of game that uses an Elanthian standard deck of cards with multiple games. After all, it doesn't make sense to have a game where the characters in the game probably have better things to do than create cards laced with addictive ink. It makes even less sense to have critters drop the cards. You get new cards from booster packs, dammit! Not from killing things!
Though it would be interesting to have to kill something in real life to get a new Magic card.
Sold on a limited basis in GS4 for an event were a deck of cards that a player could use as thrown weapons. Total charges was 52 (wonder where that came from) and had slashing crits. Been a very long time since I have seen them so I imagine they finally were all used up.
GameMonster Uska
Critters Rule
Now THAT would be cool.
Actually, I don't think a Trading Card Game would be too bad at all. Final Fantasy did a great job of incorporating a TCG into some of its games and people ended up spending more time just playing the card game than they did the actual story game. Something like this could definitely add some change to the monotony that MMORPGs can suffer from at times.
I loved Blitzball!
