I did not notice this post, probably the best post ive read in a long time possibly the best post about mmorpgs, Also have you tried ryzom? I hear its similar to swg.
No it's not really, it's an interesting game, with some of the best mob AI in the business, yet it's nothing like SWG.
Ahhh I only briefly tried it and have not logged back in yet.
I didn't read any of the comments, i don't have to. They are all just copies of the same comments I've read on this topic 10 + years ago.
There will not ever be another old school MMO because the people who play MMO's are not the same as they use to be. Old school MMO's sucked. They were basic boring and dumb games but what made the so great was the community and the people who played these games. Sadly that community is now dead and it died with WOW, the MMO killer as i like to call it.
The majority of gamers now are ignorant little halfwits hell bent on cheating and or pretending their E penis some how makes them better then every one else. Today's typical gamer, just like today's typical youth, are self absorbed lazy do nothings who want every thing handed to them as well as 3 hour work day's that pay $20 an hour for making french fries. This is the new culture my generation has unfortunetly created and it's our brain dead little morons who our wives farted out that wont ever allow any of us to have a real MMO RPG ever again. The best we can ever hope for is GTA Online because that is the future of gaming and the future of the gaming community...

Don't get me wrong, it's a good game, as well as I have heard those comparisons myself between the two. It's a shame the game never really got much of a real chance in it's prime.

So permit me to say that it's possibly you and the nostalgia club who are... "full of it" (your words).
Have to agree the things you mentioned can still be done in most of today's MMORPG's.
But...
Those aren't the thing I would be looking for in a MMORPG as in a old school experiance. The thing for me is and I have noticed especially on this forum that I truly have a different kind of playstyle when it comes to MMORPG's. I want a community game, guild are just but part of a community but doesn't make up for the whole. A community game one can go sole and still be social. Speaking from a love of full crafting professions.
The vision I thought this genre would be headed was due to SWG where I thought since we had plenty of multiplayer games that provide that experiance you noted that it had to deliver a more virtual world within a well known universe, where so many different play style's have been brought together. Things felt organic and not forced at all.
And to me it's that organic way of connecting with the world and it's community that has shifted into pure game and little world or community connection.
If you're trying to say that you wish crafting was more important in games, then I totally agree, I actually think killing mobs, be it in the wilds, in dungeons or in raids, should be one of the beginnings of the crafting process, and not the end of it, and that everything equipped in the game should be crafted by another player (or yourself). In UO, top crafters were famous, and there was no need for forced grouping to encourage socialization in that specific game. UO had other problems though which were fixed over the years (grind, macroing, some boring and tedious mechanics).
Seems like we share a similar vision of MMORPGs, which is NOT the old school forced "grouping to grind" EQ1 model. I think you're the first one who points on the true problem of more modern MMORPGs, which is that crafting basically means little to nothing because everything drops already manufactured from mobs and bosses.
But sadly, those "old schoolers" mostly seem to think that "please devs, force people to go bash mobs with 20 others like me again" will encourage "socialization"... which is, and always has been total nonsense. All it encourages is asshats abusing others in order to achieve their own goals because there's no other choice.
Not that many classes in eq1 where forced grouping, classes in eq that where good soloers where necromancers, beastmasters, shamans, druids, and mages, medicore soloers where wizards, rangers, shadow knights, and paladins, almost pure support classes like the enchanter or cleric where always invited into groups same goes for bards. You where saying?
City of heroes was almost the same way and it wasnt that old, you had classes that could solo amazing some where just slower and not once did I see people complain about it in the forums not once, same goes for eq, why? Because they knew what kind of game it was and they did not having problems finding groups in a game where grouping is a key element into the game, the community was aware of this key element and having no issues with enjoying the group content.
This is only your opinion and a few others you dont speak for the majority of gamers, you dont speak for the majority of mmorpg players, and you certainly do not speak for us in this forum like your some kind of mmorpg.com god so please knock it off and stop pretending your opinion is superior then ours, we just want an mmorpg like this get over it please.
You just seriously failed by adding in beastmasters. I was talking about the classic old school mmorpgs.... back before they were made candy mode. Back in EQ1 classic and even the first couple expacs druid could solo but took a skilled twitch gamer which at that time wasn't to common.... necro's were great soloer's although a bit slower then a good solo druid. However Necro's had little endgame or even lategame use for many other then 1 or 2 on a raid as mana batteries and necro's were usually avoided for grouping with unless you were friends and a known group necro which was a handful at most on any server (group necro's took a LOT of skill to be worth it and were similiar to enchanters but weaker with more of other suppport). Try soloing past 30 with any other class back then unless you were a twink wearing things like a fbss or other high end items on a lower level. Magician pets didn't do much after 20 far as soloing as well and to solo up a magician while possible took ages and a LOT of prep work.
But again, call it bashing on mobs but old school real gamers (not you obviously as your not old school by your lack of knowledge) miss the social aspect and group play. I don't mean we want to go sit at a cent camp for hours farming belts to turn in but having a bit more active of a dungeon that requires a group and promotes friends. This means bring back difficultty, dump dungeon finders, bring back more then 3 roles that allow a lot more potential. Then bring back useful crafting. In old EQ1 the only way to get jewelry was through a crafter (generally an enchanter). While there should be some rare sweet drops crafting should be the way to go and should be time consuming and highly rewarding for those willing to put in the time and investment.
Everyone shouldn't have access to everything in a single character and choices should be made. A single character at top level should be a self accomplishment and have some meaning and as such should take time. An MMORPG doesn't have to be a boring grind fest just because its slow but it will to those who just want to sit in one spot killing the same mob 100000 times just to level. Think of the old days of all the classics.... EQ1 for instance and seeing a gnome magician in nek forest.... or even qeynos. WoW seeing a low level dwarf hunter in night elf lands, EQ2 seeing a goodie on the evil side..... back when it was the classics those things were rare and got attention and as such felt great. People weren't all bent on getting to max level and enjoyed the ride.
I don't think gamers have suddenly become lazy and want instant travel everywhere. There is a massive audience out there for an MMO with a big world, open PVP like what WoW had, no instant travel etc etc. There have been lots of hardcore games out there that have sold millions in recent times, it proves this fact; these forums being full of thousands of posts about how MMOs suck proves this.
I just think there has been this shift where everyone expected to get 10 million subs like WoW. Thinking that players want all this stuff because WoW is doing it and treating players like idiots. Well 10 millions people don't player Dota 2 each month because it is easy, Dayz didn't sell 2+ million cause it was easy, Dark Souls isn't a massive hit because it's easy.
There is space for a hardcore MMO like what EverQuest was, only with update mechanics and not playing exactly the same, which is what this thread was all about. Just a shame SOE are making the crap they're making today with EQN, you go play Project 1999, it's brutal and it has so much atmosphere.

Depend on gameplay , for most of new generation MMORPG , i prefer fast travel because there aren't point to slow travel.
Even run around instances many time make me want instant boss fight. It pointless to slow travel in those games.
Slow travel only work on explore or adventure MMORPG where traveling use as part of challenge (combine with mob and trap)
What i like about old school MMORPG is casual group focus .
Group in the old day wasn't serious business like nowadays . It's easier to create small group while large group raid is true challenge .
Large group (raid party) in old school require social ability , to create large group , you need strong bond between members.
And about the RPG element , i ready like how they make avatar important .
Because the low level progress rate , high level PC have it own fame and infame . It raise the role playing element between players.
The chose is matter , you are a paladin , and it can't change .
I agree that its not the old games I want but the spirit or type of old school games to continue into modern realities. No point in rehashing the points.
Tbh any 'old school' player moaning about modern games should spend some time on private servers. It's fun to play old games for a bit, and absolutely nothing wrong with reminiscing and nostalgia. You also get that reality check when you see the old problems again and gfx and playability issues and realise that (good) new games are far better.
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
Because that's what nostalgia is: remembering and wanting those same feels again. Ultimately you won't get that, you can't get that.
As much as oldschoolers talk about oldschool and proclaim that modern MMO's suck, like the OP once again did in this thread, you yourselves have changed as well.
There have been so many MMO's that have emulated old games in the past years and they've failed. Just look at all the underpopulated sandboxes like Mortal Online, Wurm Online, Salem, Fallen Earth, etc.
Not to mention all the games that have closed down already.
Ultimately even the oldschool crowd doesn't want the same games as before anymore. Even they can't deal with the bullshit they bring with them.
You have changed, the community has changed, gaming has changed. Stop complaining and nagging and making a hundred threads like this, and look for new and fresh experiences that might rival your old ones instead.

Hi Tixylix,
It's simply amazing how very few understand your point. Both your original post and this had spelled out a great topic :
OLD SCHOOL STYLE, BUT DONE NEWER
It's a mindset that people can't seem to get out of there heads. Using the words " old school " makes people instantly think of stick figures, flat floating blocky environments along with fetch 10 monkey tails.....This is not your point.
Your asking for a open world player driven community game......With the exception of EVE, we no longer have any mmos such as this.
There have been so many MMO's that have emulated old games in the past years and they've failed. Just look at all the underpopulated sandboxes like Mortal Online, Wurm Online, Salem, Fallen Earth, etc.

This is what those posters are (conveniently for the sake of posting the same threads over and over again?) ignoring. Old school MMORPGs with new tech have already been made, many of them. All have failed or are on life support with a ghost population.
Isn't that a major hint?
All that means is, is that they have not been made correctly. That is all...
"Old school MMORPGs with new tech have already been made, many of them"
^^ Yes they were made but with no care or feeling, was just a blatant oh lets who some high end gfx on it they will love it type of attitude. Then fall down at the gameplay.
If those "old new" games failed because they weren't made perfectly like the "real old" games, why then doesn't the oldschool community flock to the servers of the still existent old games or the private servers of those old games that perfectly emulate the oldschool games?
EQ just tried to pull the oldschool server trick (heck I even support that), but look how that turned out. SWGEMU has been around for ages.
As for launching with lots of crap present. Again, it's a matter of forgetting how many bugs and issues were around in the old games themselves.
Fond memories of past hardships are not always fun to relive. I love the fact that I got through horrible grinds in SWG pre-CU, I like thinking about the group grinding in EQ2 at launch, I love pondering about the times when we did the AQ entry rep grind in vanilla WoW etc.
But that doesn't mean for a second that I'd like to do all that once again in a new game.
Evolution has happened and you can't stop it. New people are playing these games and expect different things. Not only that, but we veterans also expect different things. That's perfectly fine.
For the genre to go in the right direction we should stop frakking asking for developers to do the old stuff anew or to cater to a community that really doesn't exist any longer. We should be having high expectations for exciting ideas to drive and grow the genre in different directions instead.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
Majority want it fast and spoonfed ezmode old gamers and new generations want DUMB DOWN FAST. Only few maybe max 5% still want it like in Asherons call first year or Darkfall 1 first 3 months after launch to name a few examples. But gamers have ruined those games not devs.
This also go for newly released MMO'S who try old school it's GAMERS WHO RUINED it not the devs who tried but whatever they do GAMERS want dumb down no matter what.
Experience the corrupted player base of today FIRST HAND in relaunch Asheron's call 2 old and new WHINE WHINE WHINE wanted easy solo and fast handfull played like old days but majority FUCKED THIS GAME AGAIN 99% i widness this first hand it was dusgusting how old AC2 Fans where totally corrupted with spoonfed and solo mentality plus time sink arguement and whine about to long grind and many just played boxed with many alts solo and destroyed AC2 again.
I play ARK: Survival Evolved on HARDCORE PVP SERVER(still pure and very old school) its sandbox no guide in game, map ZERO MARKERS you have to look at surroundings and remember LANDMARKS you see a river or mountain to navigate THATS FOR ME OLD SCHOOL no fucking icons arrows or whatever on the map thats for losers, no hold hands if you die you lose all and have to start over i don't visit wiki's or any guide out there on the internet, i just bought game jumped in and learn on the way SOLO.
Pure Sandbox OLD STYLE devs so far don't compromise and make it easy they stick to there vision. Awesome game ARK one of best in last 15 years.
There rare but they still out there.
I keep playing ARK dunno how long it stay pure but i have little faith it stay this way seeing the topics on steam disgusting how they whine.
On site note i see people react here about old school they eather have lost memory's or never played in old days but they have no clue what there talking about, not all but many i see here.

This has nothing to do with nostalgia and everything to do with the removal of depth and complexity.
SWG for example... What other game out there can come close to SWG's economic aspect, e.g., world housing, world stores, infinite apparel options, infinite weapon and armor stats, player cities, an insanely unique expansion, etc?
None. What we have now are "Go here and go there" Theme Park games that make any old player feel mildly idiotic.
The closest thing we've got so far is ArcheAge, however, even that game is a bit too hand holding. Besides, it's been completely raped by Trion and their P2W system.
Sad, but I've been playing the hell out of the Korean MMO Tree of Life. The sad part? It feels WAY more like a MMORPG than any of the ones I've played in the past 5 or so years.
No global chat, no global trade shops, any players can put up boards outside their bases to post recruitment messages, or even make their own quests.

No global chat, no global trade shops, any players can put up boards outside their bases to post recruitment messages, or even make their own quests.
That's not on the game, though. That's on the players. So it's not that devs aen't doing old school right. Even if they do, what is being sought after won't be there.
