So my lovely lady is getting a new laptop.... I obv jumped and said i can help, dont really have a clue about the laptop scene, some seem to heat up more,or breakdown sooner.

The budget is 400-550$ MAX!!

Just need a long term laptop with at least 500GB,nice speakers.good enough graphic card to run videos on hd smoothly and not heat up,stable battery at least 6 hours long.

Also preferbly its freeOS or just windows 7

So yeah just the best stable long term laptop for 400-550$   Thanks in advance!!!  :)

If she is ok with a chromebook, the Toshiba Chromebook 2 is a great laptop, well made, good screen, and cheap too.  Only issue is the hard drive.  You'd need to buy an external 500gb drive since its not internal.  Not a big deal though, you can get cheap/fast USB 3.0 ones that are about the size of a half a stack of playing cards.

For windows.  I'd look heavily at the Dell's.  They can be had under $500, are well made, and generally are a good value for the price.

honestly, just keep an eye out for deals on fry's, office max, office depot, Walmart, newegg, hell even kmart and target.  Eventually you will find like a 700 dollar laptop priced at 400-500.  Keep an eye out on Holidays too.  So take one of the Laptop recommendations here THEN wait for it to be on sale on one of the sites I mentioned above, set up an alert for it, and just wait for it to price drop.  So if people are giving you a specific laptop recommendation and its priced at 400-500, wait a bit for a bit for one of those places to do a big sale, then it will go lower.

Side Note:  I'm shocked your first replies are people giving you recommendations about a laptop.  All of my laptop posts have always had nothing but replies trying to convince me why laptops suck and do I really need a laptop and why I should instead get a PC! haha

IMPORTANT:  Please keep all replies to my posts about GAMING.  Please no negative or backhanded comments directed at me personally.  If you are going to post a reply that includes how you feel about me, please don't bother replying & just ignore my post instead.  I'm on this forum to talk about GAMING.  Thank you.

You were probably looking for a laptop to game on is my guess.

His girlfriend wants something to probably do pinterest and youtube and that kind of crap.  You don't need powerful hardware for that and laptops fit the bill for a normal use computer for the vast majority of people.

I would just about never reccomend a desktop to anyone that wasn't a gamer looking for a PC, there's just no point in something that large without the need for the extra capabilities a desktop affords you.

Not as easy to find Win7 hardware (but can be done), but for security reasons, driver support and accessory options, might be easier to go Win8 (don't be discouraged by the nay sayers and haters, its solid and efficient).

I typically like Toshibas, but BB has this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-inspiron-17-3-laptop-intel-core-i3-4gb-memory-500gb-hard-drive-longitude-silver/3510927.p?id=1219583828946&skuId=3510927

Reputable company, good hardware for general purpose use and video. Has latest cpu, larger screen (this is a catch 22, easy to view, larger desktop area to work, but consumes more power. Otherwise, look at one with a 15.6" screen... you decide!)

    Good luck!
