I have very limited time at the moment and I am looking for an mmo that I can jump into just to while away an hour or so an evening.
My stipulations are: -
- I will only play a PVP centric mmo that has a broadly level playing field with out significant gear advantages- i.e. PVP that relies on skill. My preference for PVP playstyle is shooters as well. However, I would prefer a PVE orientated game.
- I don't mind what the monetisation system is, but I dislike nickel and diming and time/ money locks or walls. Preferably the cash shop would only have aesthetic items and boosts.
- What I don't want to be drawn into is an endless treadmill of gear grinding. This is a playstyle I have no interest in.
In fact, the more I think about it the more I realise is that I am after a game like GW1. Any suggestions?

Why not Guild Wars 2? It's very easy to hop in and do a quest or two and then take off again.
Swtor and Tsw are also good choices for that playstyle. (Though the first would be better with a subscription if you hate F2P restrictions)
Plenty of options out there.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

I disliked GW2; it removed all the good design choices in GW1 and replaced them with crap.
SWTOR felt like a single player game in MMO clothing, which doesn't bother me, but I've already played through it and don't see any reason to do so again.
I might check out TSW again, I remember at release that the clunky combat killed it for me, but hopefully they have fixed it?
It's an age-old discussion... I don't have any problem with it, but I can accept it's up to personal taste There was no change in combat since launch, just some minor honing within abilities, and lately an adjustment on mob difficulty and density. Beyond that the combat is the same as it always was (luckily )
If your preference is with shooters, and want a PvE game, why not try Defiance or Firefall? Both are nice, Defiance is better in PvE and story (especially if you like the show too), Firefall is more action-y and closer to a regular shooter.
Good call on Defiance. Its F2P now as well and Trions the publisher (I think?), which means the cash shop won't be a money grasping monstrosity.
Are you sure you know what you want as you contradict yourself within the same bullet points. That aside, there are no MMOs out there right now that meet your criteria. You may want to wait for The Repopulation or The Division. Other options are the ARMA 3 Mods although servers size are small in comparison to MMOs. Another option is GTA V.
Seriously? The first sentence in the first bullet point has multiple clauses; the second half of the sentence qualifies the first. You only read and responded to the first clause... read the rest of the sentence. Likewise, the second bullet point was obviously indicating that I do not mind if the monetisation system is F2P, B2P or subscription and then went on to qualify the specifics of any given monetisation systems that I dislike.
Why am I having to give English lessons on here?
MAGA
It's Trion, and the model is pretty cool, not as "friendly" as Rift's but still good. DLCs are optional (but fun), the shop has mostly convenience and advancement boosts - but a higher player doesn't automatically a better player. I think the only limit of the free play is the limited keycode amount, I'd unlock that first... but former players kept everything from the pre-f2p era.
I'm downloading it now. I'll buy the DLCs, I have no problem paying for my entertainment... I just dislike having the cash shop thrust in my face every five minutes. I played this through back at release and it was only a few days worth of content, but I enjoyed what there was. It'll be interesting to see what's new.
Funnily enough I had little time for the show, I saw a few episodes and it was distinctly average.
Planetside 2 is your game. It's not Pay to win, all weapons can be earned with in game play, it's more pay to skip, and pay only items are cosmetic. Skill matters, new characters can own vets with personal skill, starting weapons are pretty decent, the other weapons are not better, just different and more side grades. The issue for new players is learning how things work, but they've made it a lot better. This a true MMO in ever sense of the word.

Yes, OK.
