I understand the 50$ mark for the expansion - a fair price after 3 years.
At the same time I told friends and online acquantainces when Gw2 was up for 10$ and they bought the game.
Now all of them could have gotten the game for free just by buying the expansion.
I hope they will improve this because right now I feel slapped in the face.
I advertised their game to my community being convinced that it's the best deal they will ever offer.
"Haha thanks fucker for convincing your friends to toss money at us for something they could have gotten for free soon!"
When was last sale on GW2? Remind us.
There were many recently but apparently you prefer to act like you don't know that.
Malabooga, seriously..
You are whiteknighting in such an extreme manner that it's making us - the Gw2 community - look really bad.
+1 It's truly excessive.
As for the price point, I am 'meh' about it. So far, even with all the new guild hall customization being shown, I feel this is going to be a light expansion. I would have been happier with say $29.99 but I will pay it regardless. I have gotten enough hours of enjoyment out of the base game that I will be trying the expansion as long as the price isn't absurdly high. I understand most of the complaints though.
For some reason this shocked me when it shouldn't have. Just greed from another mmo company. I'M saving my money for Fallout 4 PIPBOY Edition. I swear when Fallout 4 comes out i won't be thinking about mmo's.A lot of good single player games coming out like Rebel Galaxy. Can't wait to be playing both of those games.
So, the expansion is up for preorder, but if you already own the game and have been playing for years you get nothing for $50. No extra character slots, nothing but a game we have no real info on other than a few small details. The forums are a flame in anger, people are vowing not to buy it…while others feel the need to pay even more ($100 for the ultimate edition)....oh and if you are new, you get the base game.....lucky you......I was looking forward to it, now it’s like someone handed me a deflated balloon …What did they offer up to remedy this? if you bought the base game recently you can get an upgrade for less, but if you have owned the game, screw you xD.....What a debacle.
If you recently bought it you are offered a offer which saves you money..
If you already PLAY THE GAME FOR YEARS you dont get a offer, what is wrong with that? you spend YEARS playing the game without having to pay anything else and you think you should be granted a offer, while you play the game FOR YEARS on which you paid YEARS ago 2 mc donalds meals worth of money...
The mmorpg community is ridicilous.
If someone played GW2 for "years" there is something wrong with them. There is a few months of content at best. I mean, how many world completions, zerker only dungeons and Mystic Toilet RNG dice throws can you do?

I should also point out that even with a different model, you are NEVER going to see new players pay the same price as you did when the game was brand spanking new.You have to expect some sort of deal going forward, the same thing will happen with the newest expansion a few months after release.
I simply laugh at those that always need to be FIRST,can't wait, imagine those that pay extra to get into early beta testing in games.I bet they realize months later that it was foolish.

The wife and I will not be buying the xpac at that price point.
People keep saying that because the game doesn't have a sub the price point is warranted, but I counter that buy saying this game doesn't have enough content to justify a sub in the first place.
In other news, SWTOR's new expansion will be FREE to subscribers. Sounds like EA is learning from their mistakes while ANet keeps making new ones.
No game i ever played warranted a sub. GW2 just prooves that.
In other news, SWTORs new expansion will cost you as much money as you pay subscriptions, 3 months sub and youre already at the cost of HOT. If you DONT pay sub....bye bye expansion.
OP, be realistic. You have people here who defend cash shops for non-existing games. You have people here who defend doing work for a company while paying them box-fees and subscriptions.
Do you really expect them to see how shitty a deal Arenanet is doing? Especially A'net's part where they had flash sales of $10, now slap you in the face by saying it will be free if you wait a little bit longer. We have to wait to see about their statement they will correct it for 'recent' sales. How recent are we talking. Also, I agree that they are shitting loyal long time customers (who have probably spent some serious money on their cash shops) by giving them less value than new customers.
You should be realistic and see that some people dont do antyhing else but troll.
If you played game 2+ months for 10$ and youre complaining NOW, you really have some issues.
Shitting on loyal customers?
Loyal customers played game for free for 3 years, have ton of completely free content and spent cash on gems at their leisure and are not complaining that after 3 years comes out an expansion and that "instead 40$ it costs 50$" or soemething retarded as that.
Trolls =/ loyal customer, you got some things backwards.
Man, quit the namecalling. You are as much as a 'shill' as OP is a 'troll'. We both know the truth though. I don't see why people keep defending companies with their lives as if it is their own mother. Are you denying that Arenanet provides less value to the veterans than people who are completely new? Look at it objectively. If you are new, you get core game + expansion for $50.
If you already own the core game, you get expansion for $50. Who gets the most bang for his buck?
And don't come with this shit about playing the game for free for 3 years. Arenanet's wages for those years were also dependent on those loyal customers. It's not as if Arenanet was a charity, giving everything for free. I dare you, go ahead and work for a company, PR position, and call your loyal customers names. You won't stay there for long. The loyal customers are what's keeping them alive. The new customers is just extra profit.
I got many GOTY editions....on steam sale <10$, does that make you furious beyond measure?
Yes, look at it objectively, they youll see how ridiculous you sound.
ANet have every piece of content for FREE, WTF are you going on about, get yourself informed rofl.

Anet can price the Xpac how they want, however players that already own GW SHOULD get a character slot with all versions of the Xpac.

ehh.. WoW upgraded their character per server slots when MoP released and they added in the monk class, that was free for everyone, so apparently you haven't been through many expansions with games at all.
as far as i know you had to buy MOP
As well as pay for a subscription fee after box price + tax. ANet does not have a steady stream of monthly revenue from subscriptions like WoW. Did Blizzard give out extra character slots when they added Blood Elves and Draenei to the mix? Did they expand character slots when Death Knights hit the scene? Worgens? Goblins? WoW has gone through multiple expansions and is over ten years old, GW2 is going through their first. If you were new to Cata, you had to buy the base game of WoW and each expac after that as a new player, talk about bleeding your customers!
The sad truth for the OP is - if your character slots are filled up at this point pay the "one time fee" to expand it, you can pay 800 gems so in actuality you don't have to use real life cash.
I don't feel like buying the expansion pack anymore. It is not even the price. It is the middle finger i feel in my face as a ''veteran'' player (of 1.5 years *cough*).
If they give the core game away to new players to make it easier for them to get into the game, good for them. But i expect them to give the players that have been playing for years something as well. Like a character slot so people can try out the new class at least without having to buy a new slot.
Giving away free stuff to a minor group of the playerbase and ignoring the majority isn't very clever.

And ill buy FO4 GOTY edition on Steam for 10$.
MAN is Bethesda GREEDY company.
Logic.
And logic fails, since he talked about the Pipboy edition. I'd love to see how you download it through that steamy bloated client (since it's physical, with poster, metal case, etc.)
On this news, I am going to wait. Too many options coming this fall (SWTOR expansion, Wildstar F2P) that even if I did buy it at full price, chances are I would not play it initially.
ANET makes good games but the internet seems to overhype their releases.

Not to mention paid mods debacle, and they still didnt comment on will mods be free or paid this time around...

Why is it that every time a person vents a frustration about a price someone turns it around as an "entitlement" issue?
I would guess that it is the way the OP presents his frustration. He complains about getting nothing for $50, and that only newer players are getting bonus stuff. He then calls it a "debacle." His views are very subjective, and anyone who doesn't see it that way is going to debate his arguments. Since price point, content, and lack of veteran perks are his main concern, many will take the stance that he feels entitled.
It basically comes down to being on the internet. Online debates are usually carried out by people with extreme views. Those with more mild views don't really pop off as much. For example:
Person with view #1: The expansion is $50, which I can afford. I already like the game, so I guess I will buy it.
Person with view #2: The game is ok, but I don't think paying $50 for an expansion with possibly limited content is in my budget.
Their conversation would be something like:
P1: I am pretty excited about the expansion coming out. I can't wait to play it.
P2: Yeah, the game is ok, but I don't want to fork out $50 right now.
P1: Really? Man, I just can't wait to play!
P2: That's cool. I will see what happens after it's out, and I may buy it then.
So pretty mundane. Compare that to what we have going on in this thread:
OP: This is stupid! I am mad.
Next poster (NP): This game is AWESOME! You are crazy! You are so entitled!
OP: Screw you! It's stupid! I have been playing forever and they are screwing me! You are such a fanboi!
NP: All you noobz are sooooo entitled! Rant Rant Rant!

--- Being upset that you're not getting something for free because you think you deserve it ---
Personally I define that as a sense of entitlement.
Entitlement is that magical counter word to greed.
Anet clearly said you need to own Gw2 in order to play HoT - so people made use of the discount event.
Now they are giving it away for free - liars much?
What vets are getting so far are 3 new pve maps with some new features inside them such as gliding and speed boosts.
50$ for that - another 10$ if you want to use the new class because you need to buy a new character slot.
60$ for 3 maps and a new class.. the price is that of a full AAA expansion but the amount of content seems to be lacking.
Debating the value of an Xpac is a completely different thing. Your point's have nothing in common with a sense of entitlement.
Is the discount event you speak of, the $10 weekend event from the end of last January? If so I think your comments regarding it are little harsh and unfair.
Personally I think $50-$60 is too expensive for an Xpac period.

I'm longtime Gw2 fan, being playing it since headstart to day. I agree with you completely.
They could've priced it 60$ but add the character slot (which is the same money they end up getting, even more, because they people would be unable to trade gold for char slots) and they wouldn't have had to do so much damage control as they have to do now.
As a Gw1 player, I can't count the times i was asked whether or not someone should by extra slot and I was like "Nahh .. in Gw1 we didn't buy slots because expacks came with free ones".
Not to mention the way they cowardly edited their FAQ, which btw is class action lawsuit in the making. Saw some guys on reddit actually considering it because this is classic bait and switch gimmicks, which is illegal almost everywhere in the sane world.
EDIT: @laserit - The last discount was 1-2 months back. They had another one after the January one *AND* another one at select retailers few weeks back.

Maybe the should have charged a bit less for people who already owned the game, that is true but Arenanet is hardly robbing anyone.
I never played a MMO for so long before paying so little. So if you don't like it don't buy the expansion, it will be on sale sooner or later.
I will order it this weekend myself, I would now but I am sitting in a motel room on a crappy unreliable wifi...
