+1 It's truly excessive.
As for the price point, I am 'meh' about it. So far, even with all the new guild hall customization being shown, I feel this is going to be a light expansion. I would have been happier with say $29.99 but I will pay it regardless. I have gotten enough hours of enjoyment out of the base game that I will be trying the expansion as long as the price isn't absurdly high. I understand most of the complaints though.
Maybe the should have charged a bit less for people who already owned the game, that is true but Arenanet is hardly robbing anyone.
I never played a MMO for so long before paying so little. So if you don't like it don't buy the expansion, it will be on sale sooner or later.
I will order it this weekend myself, I would now but I am sitting in a motel room on a crappy unreliable wifi...
If someone played GW2 for "years" there is something wrong with them. There is a few months of content at best. I mean, how many world completions, zerker only dungeons and Mystic Toilet RNG dice throws can you do?

I have never stood by and accepted all these gimmicks on f2p gaming,i was and still am perfectly happy with subscription gaming.That is why i continue to play FFXI,no gimmicks,no cash shop,everyone on the same playing field.
I should also point out that even with a different model,you are NEVER going to see new players pay the same price as you did when the game was brand spanking new.You have to expect some sort of deal going forward,the same thing will happen with the newest expansion a few months after release.
I simply laugh at those that always need to be FIRST,can't wait,imagine those that pay extra to get into early beta testing in games.I bet they realize months later that it was foolish.
Bottom line is quit supporting cheesy gimmicks like f2p gaming,if they can't give you a solid triple A game that looks worthy of a subscription,then don't support them.

In other news, SWTORs new expansion will cost you as much money as you pay subscriptions, 3 months sub and youre already at the cost of HOT. If you DONT pay sub....bye bye expansion.

Anet can price the Xpac how they want, however players that already own GW SHOULD get a character slot with all versions of the Xpac.
I had fun once, it was terrible.
And ill buy FO4 GOTY edition on Steam for 10$.

As well as pay for a subscription fee after box price + tax. ANet does not have a steady stream of monthly revenue from subscriptions like WoW. Did Blizzard give out extra character slots when they added Blood Elves and Draenei to the mix? Did they expand character slots when Death Knights hit the scene? Worgens? Goblins? WoW has gone through multiple expansions and is over ten years old, GW2 is going through their first. If you were new to Cata, you had to buy the base game of WoW and each expac after that as a new player, talk about bleeding your customers!
The sad truth for the OP is - if your character slots are filled up at this point pay the "one time fee" to expand it, you can pay 800 gems so in actuality you don't have to use real life cash.
I don't feel like buying the expansion pack anymore. It is not even the price. It is the middle finger i feel in my face as a ''veteran'' player (of 1.5 years *cough*).
If they give the core game away to new players to make it easier for them to get into the game,good for them. But i expect them to give the players that have been playing for years something as well. Like a character slot so people can try out the new class at least without having to buy a new slot.
Giving away free stuff to a minor group of the playerbase and ignoring the majority isn't very clever.
And logic fails, since he talked about the Pipboy edition. I'd love to see how you download it through that steamy bloated client
(since it's physical, with poster, metal case, etc.)
On this news, I am going to wait. Too many options coming this fall (SWTOR expansion, Wildstar F2P) that even if I did buy it at full price, chances are I would not play it initially.
ANET makes good games but the internet seems to overhype their releases.

Why is it that every time a person vents a frustration about a price someone turns it around as an "entitlement" issue?
I would guess that it is the way the OP presents his frustration. He complains about getting nothing for $50, and that only newer players are getting bonus stuff. He then calls it a "debacle." His views are very subjective, and anyone who doesn't see it that way is going to debate his arguments. Since price point, content, and lack of veteran perks are his main concern, many will take the stance that he feels entitled.
It basically comes down to being on the internet. Online debates are usually carried out by people with extreme views. Those with more mild views don't really pop off as much. For example:
Person with view #1: The expansion is $50, which I can afford. I already like the game, so I guess I will buy it.
Person with view #2: The game is ok, but I don't think paying $50 for an expansion with possibly limited content is in my budget.
Their conversation would be something like:
P1: I am pretty excited about the expansion coming out. I can't wait to play it.
P2: Yeah, the game is ok, but I don't want to fork out $50 right now.
P1: Really? Man, I just can't wait to play!
P2: That's cool. I will see what happens after it's out, and I may buy it then.
So pretty mundane. Compare that to what we have going on in this thread:

Anet clearly said you need to own Gw2 in order to play HoT - so people made use of the discount event.
Now they are giving it away for free - liars much?
What vets are getting so far are 3 new pve maps with some new features inside them such as gliding and speed boosts.
50$ for that - another 10$ if you want to use the new class because you need to buy a new character slot.
60$ for 3 maps and a new class.. the price is that of a full AAA expansion but the amount of content seems to be lacking.
Debating the value of an Xpac is a completely different thing. Your point's have nothing in common with a sense of entitlement.
Is the discount event you speak of, the $10 weekend event from the end of last January? If so I think your comments regarding it are little harsh and unfair.
Personally I think $50-$60 is too expensive for an Xpac period.

I'm longtime Gw2 fan, being playing it since headstart to day. I agree with you completely.
They could've priced it 60$ but add the character slot (which is the same money they end up getting, even more, because they people would be unable to trade gold for char slots) and they wouldn't have had to do so much damage control as they have to do now.
As a Gw1 player, I can't count the times i was asked whether or not someone should by extra slot and I was like "Nahh .. in Gw1 we didn't buy slots because expacks came with free ones".
Not to mention the way they cowardly edited their FAQ, which btw is class action lawsuit in the making. Saw some guys on reddit actually considering it because this is classic bait and switch gimmicks, which is illegal almost everywhere in the sane world.
EDIT: @laserit - The last discount was 1-2 months back. They had another one after the January one *AND* another one at select retailers few weeks back.
