hello all,

i recently dropped WoW and was thinking about picking up SWG again but i have a series of questions.  i have read about the CU and im willing to give it a shot, but there are some other things that are bothering me.

1) how messed up is the economy due to sites like ige?  for example, WoW really didnt have any problems but games like L2 were wrecked by it.  should i expect outrageous prices for things?

2) how solo friendly is the game after the CU?

3) i have read a lengthy tutorial about the jedi quest, and while being a jedi is not something that i would buy the game for i would still like to try it.  so about how long, on average, does it take to unlock the slot?

4) i would prefer to start on a lower population server, are there any new ones, or servers with relatively light populations?

these are all i really have for now, pls let me know.

thanks!

I wouldn't say that the economy is skewed due to outside influences, like IGE, but by the relative ease of gaining credits. I would imagine that economies differ from server to server.

    2) how solo friendly is the game after the CU?

For the time that I played post CU, it wasn't that difficult. Having said that I had a MBH/MRM template.

    3) i have read a lengthy tutorial about the jedi quest, and while being a jedi is not something that i would buy the game for i would still like to try it. so about how long, on average, does it take to unlock the slot?

My only advice to this is try out the quests, if you like it you won't mind the time commitment. This may be a somewhat cynical view, but imo Jedi is SOE's scheme to ensure that a certain population of players keep their subscriptions.

    4) i would prefer to start on a lower population server, are there any new ones, or servers with relatively light populations?

I don't think any new servers have been created recently, however I can vouch for Kettemoor being a small tight community.

    Sure :)

Actually prices are pretty good for things. There are some items that are going to be insane but that's because they're hard to get parts for and a pain to make, not because people buy so many on IGE or whatever. Haven't noticed any real problems with the economy.

    2) how solo friendly is the game after the CU?

Very. I solo all the time. Some will try to tell you that you can't solo since the CURB was done but that's just a flat out lie. Unfortunately for me when the CURB hit I was in the process of changing my template so the Respec, while nice, didn't help a lot since I'd already dropped a lot of trained boxes (so I couldn't just MOVE them). So after the CURB I was about CL50 and had to work my way back up to my double-master in my new professions. I solo'd almost all of it. I still solo regularly and even recently re-did my template again after the respec was over (from MSMUG/MPISTOL to TKM/MCM) and had to grind that from scratch. Most of the TKM part was solo.

Now, it IS hard to grind MEDICAL xp solo but regular combat type XP is a breeze. Medical XP CAN be gotten solo but it's MUCH MUCH MUCH faster in a group :)

However, I would say that it's more solo friendly than any game except maybe WOW and GuildWars :)

    3) i have read a lengthy tutorial about the jedi quest, and while being a jedi is not something that i would buy the game for i would still like to try it. so about how long, on average, does it take to unlock the slot?

    Ok Jedi is tricky:
    1) You have to do several things to get force sensiutive:

    • visit various points of interest that pertain to the force.
    • complete several large scale 'content' missions
    • once the above two happen you need to talk to the 'old man' (he shows up automatically between 24-72 hours after you get 'glowy'.
    • fight and defeat 3 SITH that will attack you (Highly recommend being with friends if you're not CL80 when this happens)

    2) Once completing the "Get Force Sensitive" portion you then need to visit the force villiage on Dathomir. There you will have to accomplish many quests (which are pretty cool, some are very tedious though) to unlock various trees of force sensitive abilities. These will give you bonuses to your normal abilities like melee defense, etc.

    3) Once unlocking (and completing) 6 skill trees (24 skill points) in the Force Sensitive trees you will have to begin your Padawan Trials to unlock your Jedi. And once you do that you then unlock the Jedi abilities and can begin to train them. At that time I believe you are also given a 2nd character slot.

    4) i would prefer to start on a lower population server, are there any new ones, or servers with relatively light populations?

    thanks!

None of the servers are overcrowded at this point. They are all 'medium' or lower population (and always have been)... I don't ever remember seeing a server that was at 'heavy' except right at release.

But if you want a fun server with lots of very mature and friendly players: I play on LOWCA and have never encountered a more fun group of people. My name in game is Taram if you decide to start up there. My PA is very new player friendly and composed mostly of adults, many of us have kids so we understand the whole "running afk to get screaming infant" syndrome.

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

    Still in: A couple Betas

--> IMHO IGE has minimal influence on SWG on the servers I know (which is Naritus and the three EURO servers). Jedi sold on e-bay are somewhat more common, and easily spotted, as they are those people without a clue on what to do with their toon :-)  (--> Bantha Poodoo  :-)
--> There was a time when campers, dupers  and farmers liked to work on SWG on certain servers (again not the 4 mentioned above), but it was MUCH MUCH less than in other games like Lineage or UO. And ever since WoW came out that cheater community found a new much larger market.
    2) how solo friendly is the game after the CU?
--> Its harder to solo than before, but its perfectly playable, although slower. In contrast to pre-CU there is now an incentive to group, where before there was none. Some content you wont be able to access without a group.
    3) i have read a lengthy tutorial about the jedi quest, and while being a jedi is not something that i would buy the game for i would still like to try it.  so about how long, on average, does it take to unlock the slot?
--> 2-4 weeks to be force sensitive, 6 times 3 weeks for the quests minimum, another week for the exit quests and final encounter. About 22 weeks to Padawan minimum. Although I recommend you take your time to enjoy the game.
    4) i would prefer to start on a lower population server, are there any new ones, or servers with relatively light populations?
--> No new ones. High population servers = Bria, Ahazi, Europe-Chimaera, Katana, maybe Gorath and Bloodfin.   My own (to which you are very much invited --> Naritus) is a medium population server. When you create your toon check out server load during prime time (e.g. weekend prime time in US) to get an idea about server population.
    --> Have fun,  Erillion
these are all i really have for now, pls let me know.
    thanks!
