what he just hired total noobs, for real?? this is getting better and better
I can´t even believe it
Erin Roberts has been working in the Video game industry for years. Not sure why you think he is a "noob".
As far as his wife, Sandi Gardiner, it would really depend on what she is doing for the company. I see that she is "vice president of marketing" so it's very possible that she has skills that are pertinent to the job.
If an opera singer friend of mine can win an emmy for casting a popular cable show then I believe it's plausible for one to use similar skills to cross into other jobs that can equally benefit from those skills.
It seems that she also has acting and producing credits.
Whether or not these are the right people to do these jobs remains to be seen.
The idea of family businesses doesn't seem so odd to me. I've seen them both succeed and fail.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I do not care about Star Citizen if it flops or not. It seems like it can become a great game but hiring your own family seems weird to me. I would look for the best person possible to fill those jobs instead of putting my own family members there. Its not true that we should only judge the final product. Basically because I think its morally wrong to waste other peoples money.
Hmm, if your brother is a highly successful veteran of the gaming industry, has proven himself in many projects that became huge hits, and your female friend (wife ?) just broke a world record in crowdfunding marketing success .... naaahhh ... why should you hire them ? Not good enough ! Keep looking ! I am sure some Apple intern/trainee would be a better choice.
Have fun
Oh and let's not forget about accountability and vision. First off, family wants to see you succeed, and the fact that Erin has been there with his brother from the beginning, right through Freelancer and his eventual retirement from games and then resurrection, they'll want to "win" for him.
IDK, I think it's a great story, actually. I am a CR fan. I've played just about everything he's done, but more than that, I think it's a great story about persistence, dreams, and passion. We are always asking for more innovation and then when it comes around, we want to knock the innovators down and tell them what they're doing can't be done. *pfft*
This "game" is awesome for all the wrong reasons. Nepotism. Overblown scope. Missed deadlines. Withdrawn promised features. A fanatical fanbase who have invested not just way too much money (people have literally spent tens of thousands of dollars) but too much of themselves to back out now.
Well, they were not forced to give their money away to rent alpha code. They could also just wait and watch how the development pans out instead of buying into the hype campaign.
Plus like some said: it is his company, he can do whatever he want.
"going into arguments with idiots is a lost cause, it requires you to stoop down to their level and you can't win"
Lol the game is like 50% threw development, get a hold of yourselves children. The naysayers hate on fanboys, but they are little more than anti fanboys, just as illogical and presumptuous as the fanboys they hate on.
Hate on the game once it is gold kids, doing it before just shows how shallow your minds are.
Pretty sure that this is the Roberts intention... because you know... until there... he made a loooooot of more money.
His dream, that everyone did not raise any kind of concern earlier. Probably would sell more ships.
We as consumers of his product can and SHOULD only judge the final product. How he gets there is of no importance for us.
Considering that they should be there already, according with their advertising, people would be entitled at this point even to see how they spent the money (but I saw that they changed their TOS, just adding more 6 months and, mark my words, the clause will change again with more 6 months, and again, and again).
Actually, if she is at ALL responsible for marketing in any way, then I'll give her a hearty golf clap because SC is the largest crowdfunded game ever.
Definitely not her merit. She is more responsible for tons of bait-and-switch, creation of impossible expectations and hype, flawed sales offers that not only already impacted negatively in their reputation, as still will impact the project entirely.
In fact, I am pretty sure that the marketing scheme of this game is the root of all the CIG problems, mainly the impossible ones, that they will ever be able to manage, in the next couple of years (and mainly on release, because all the shit storm that they will get, higher than any other game ever, only will happen because the marketing plan that they follow).
Only an amateur, short-sighted, who never worked in the game industry before, wouldn't see that. And that is exactly her resume.
Originally posted by vgamer I'm glad CIG found good replacements for those who abandoned ship. I truly believe in CR and His holy quest to bring us the best game that will ever grace mankind. Just respect us fans for putting up thousands of dollars in the marvelous vision of this Man. No harm is done when the next ship is rolled out to be sold and we fans are happilly accepting everything this Guy gives to us. The heavens praise CR, he will bring us the best game ever and you nay-sayers will all be amazed. What could possibly go wrong with so much money?
Man. I am worried now. You know.
Erin Roberts actually was the one who finished most of the earlier games of Roberts, that if Roberts was kept in the helm, never would be finished and he never would have them to use as his past credits.
I mean... if this guy is actually more competent than Roberts as the history shown, maybe they would start to set more reasonable feature-set to deliver... would start to approach faster from release and then, oh god... I have even fear to say this:
they would stop to sell those pretty JPEGs for hundreds or thousands of dollars.
Noooooooooooooo!
Hopefully Erin was converted by the glory of our god Chris.
Please guys! Don't rush! I want more JPEGs to buy!

Chris didn't know about these two? lol
He would rather hire some outside people he knows nothing about over so called qualified family members?
I think there could be a LOT more hidden from us than is let on.One example comes to mind, just maybe he used other people for connections and actually has outside funding, pretending to need the consumers money.
Imo there should be a TON more transparency when comes to taking other people's money on a WHIM.Seriously if some guy walked by you on the street and said lend me 10 i'll turn it into 20,you would ask a lot of questions and want something more in stone than his word.

Let me start by saying that I am a huge Chris Roberts fan. Wing commander is pretty much my all time favorite PC game series. Due to me being such a huge fan, I also know very well what he is capable of, and have an idea what he isn't capable of. One thing he is not capable of, is delivering a game like SC is any time frame that anyone would consider anywhere near remotely reasonable. Chris Roberts had to essentially beg Microsoft to buy digital anvil so they could get money to "finish" freelancer. Even then, he pretty much had to leave the company for that game to even get released. If it wasn't for Microsoft, Freelancer almost certainly wouldnt have seen the light of day...
All that said, there are plenty of reasons to be sceptical of SC, but him hiring his brother Erin is not one of them. Erin has worked on pretty much every game Chris has done, and certainly all of his best.
I'm not at all a Roberts fan. Didn't have much opinion about him until Star Citizen started cooking, and I talked with all my ex-Origin friends about him. It was not pretty. He's #2 on the Most Disliked list (behind Robert Garriott, who would apparently slit your throat for a dime).
No one said anything particularly pointed about Erin though, and he has worked extensively in the field. Might be a really good hire, as they've worked together smoothly before. Don't know anything about Sandi at all.
Yeah, that 'finish Freelancer' thing. No one ever seems to look closely at how Roberts squandered all the money Microsoft invested in that game before the sellout. And with the success of the Cash Shop in Advance model they've used so far on Star Citizen, I'm sure Roberts won't be bringing it up any time soon.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Chris didn't know about these two? lol
He would rather hire some outside people he knows nothing about over so called qualified family members?
Here are some reasons:
1, he liked what the former people did and thought they brought something fresh to the table.
2, His brother was doing something else and wasn't available. Possibly the same with his wife.
3, At the time his brother might not have been interested in the position, maybe because it seemed like a much smaller project at the time.
4, He was hoping that the people he did bring in would then using their own networking and bring in other people who were also very qualified to help the project grow.
5, His wife probably wanted to concentrate on her own career but having become involved with this project and seeing that there was an opening that needed to be filled was offered the job.
6, Maybe because this project is so time consuming this is a way that he can still see/work with his wife in a meaningful way. I actually know a few couples like this.
7, Maybe he felt his past experiences working with his brother put a strain on the relationship so he didn't want to bring that type of drama back into the family. Now, because there is a need, he sat down with his brother and ironed out a way where they could both work together that worked for both of them.
I mean, you could just keep going. none of this stuff is new and has been played out more times than we have generations.

Maybe they were busy with another job? Maybe not.
Didnt realized the kickstarter of SC was a invesment where I could of doubled my money.
Ofc he has investors, who in their right mind would not. How much, who knows.
I am sure he is tearing his ears off from the few hundred up to a million he got from his investors and gave up many % of his company for. When they now have raised so much.
Hiring family does not mean its your grandma, or your nephew that is a drug addict.
Most successful families has more than one talented member. Be it from good education, or from feeding on a silver spoon from birth.
There is a reason why many companies are family based.
Are they qualified? I have no idea, and I do not care. I dont play flight simulators.

Erin is. Sandi isn't.
Shes in marketing and her past career has been in same position.
Not really. She was an actress/model. Never worked in the position or if had some trainee experience that I never heard about, it was far of the game industry. Probably she has a degree in the matter at least.
I am going to research how many multi-millionary companies that trade globally and survived in the long term, puts as the VP of Marketing fully responsible for all the plans and actions, sales, communication, PR, etc., someone with a degree that never worked before not even as a trainee...

That was quick: Zero. CIG won't survive in the long term due their marketing mistakes due the short-sighted, unprofessional and inexperienced view in how to make money without burning your customer retention in the process. Last that I heard... they are dealing with a niche inside a niche (Space Sim fans who loves to upgrade machines). Maybe they are trying to find replacements in the "Racing" genre, to fill this situation that don't care how many people they burn, only care with money? Its curious that Braben and his company that is in so many years in the niche market refused to sell ships, while he could perfectly do that too. Or refused to make a low-entry price for the earlier phases of the project, avoiding bringing too much people earlier. Making the opposite of Roberts, ignoring such "gold mine" scheme. I wonder why.
