I know that you have only asked for MMO suggestions but you have tried some of the gigantic single-player rpgs out there, right? Like Oblivion and Skyrim, Fallout III (soon IV too) and Fallout New Vegas, and Witcher III? They offer almost everything you might want (except of course other players). I personally play these kinds of games now since I find today's MMORPGs to be lacking.

I would recommend trying Ryzom. It is not very well known, but appears to fit many of the things you find important.
  • vonryan123vonryan123 Member UncommonPosts: 516

Might sound lame and the graphics are dated but EQ2 is a good content game. Some one suggested Darkfall I urge against that as its mainly a pvp game (more like high prowless/lvl ganking lowbies) and the crafting is a pain in the butt to put it nice. I suffer from medical issues that stop me from being good or even playing some mmo's and have taken to eve and other armchair RPGS like the following:

    Fable I-III

Ascent the space game (mmo but 99% pve based tons of crafting mining and research)

    Grim Dawn

One under rated game I play and love is Kingdoms of Amalur

    Planet Explorers

    Tourchlight I-II

Elite Dangerous: I play this with Voice Attack and its out right good fun, no real crafting atm but its coming and the game is huge!

Either way best of luck with FFI and hope you like it more then I did.

I'm very glad to hear your enjoying the game.  It's the only mmo I play now.  I don't know what server your on or if you have joined a Free Company (guild), but if your on Ultros and are looking for a mature, enjoyable, and helpful FC< then give MAGIC a try.  Send me a PM on here and I will give you the info.

Again, glad your enjoying the game!

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

Honestly i recomend FFXIV or ESO. I have been with ESO since launch and a lot has changed, from the addition of guild stores to fixes with combat and pesky mom pop-in. Now if you are looking for a global auction house and such (aka the lazy mans vender) then FFXIV would be a good fit. the community can be a bit rash at times but that is mmo norm. The grind is a pain and makes eso and other mmos seem simple, and the lack of voice acting bothers me. But the game is fun, and you do not need to make multiple characters in order to play all of the classes.

Late to the thread, sorry.  But would have said FF14 like so many did.  Had Fallen Earth come to mind because of the crafting and all but it has the third person aiming style like ESO.  Also Fallen Earth's community went from unbelievably great at release to a downward spiral.  Still it may be worth a peek if nothing else.

For socializing I would say Second Life but SL lacks combat/goals and so many things typical to an MMO since it isn't really an MMO.  The crafting is technically make ANYTHING you can imagine however and you can make money for doing so.  I used to cash out hundreds of dollars a month there and wasn't anywhere near a major name.

Anyways good luck and hoping FF14 or some game works out as near to perfect as possible.

This post is mainly for those who have relatives (or are themselves) challenged in some physical way when playing MMOs.

For pure enjoyment's sake, FFXIV is already one of my favorite games. I really enjoy the graphics and animation. I'm currently a level-26 Arcanist; though, I'm 4-5 levels above the main story line and by doing every available dungeon repeatedly and tons of side quests, I've managed to keep my character well geared. The Main Story quests and side quests have not been difficult; however, for several of the Class quests (which must be done solo) I've generally had to make two or three tries to get them done -- more a matter of adjusting tactics than physical ineptitude. Some games stress me out with too much combat or being at too much constant risk. I haven't felt that with FFXIV. Also, my lack of confidence often has me skipping a good deal of group combat; again, not so with this game. The group finder mechanic is the best I've experienced, and the fact I've done many of the dungeons multiple times stands as testament.

Those who recommended FFXIV to me were spot on. I love it.

Here's what I'm doing to make the game easier:

    1. Razer Naga mouse with hotbar icons assigned to mouse buttons (no macros yet).

    2. Razer Blackwidow keyboard with hotbar icons assigned (mainly for potions, mount, and pet summons).

    3. Voice recognition software (Tazti) -- so far using this for heals and mana regeneration spell.

    4. Game running at highest monitor resolution -- all customizable text at largest size.

    5. Ensuring that I stay 4-5 levels above mob/boss levels in quests (character geared to level). I'm doing this by taking most available side quests, leves, guildleves, dungeon opportunities, and FATEs. While this approach may not be for everybody, it helps me play more confidently, with less stress. For me, it's just more enjoyable when I'm not always on the verge of dying.

    6. Arcanist has battle pets. The first is a dps pet that holds aggro at lower levels. The second pet (at level-15) is a tanking pet. Because I can be somewhat slow in reacting, these pets give me another margin of comfort. I use the dps pet in dungeons and the tanking pet when I'm soloing -- it has died a couple of times when I was overcome by multiple mobs, but I was able to re-summon quickly enough to save myself (I quite like this ability). I will be picking up Thaumaturge (sp?) as a second profession and hope I'm good enough with the game by then to get by without the pet.

I hope this helps anyone with challenges similar to mine. Again, thank you for all of your advice and suggestions.

Indeed the game is pretty much easy mode till you reach Titan. Again I hope you enjoy the game, I did till I was lvl 47 then just got fed up with the combat dodge mechanics in dungeons.

I hope you will comeback and give us an update when you hit your 40s or so.  I really want to know if your opinion on combat will change with the later stuff.

Try Runescape if the recent direction of their monetization doesn't put you off. As well as the kiddy community. Get a good clan and turn off public chat and you should be alright.

FFXIV: ARR your standard MMORPG experience done really well. Don't expect anything innovative but it's a good experience and will keep you busy quite awhile.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

Or just Minecraft on a server that has PVP disabled. Either modded or vanilla. Don't get fooled by how Minecraft looks. The adaptations thanks to mods and possibilities are endless. No MMO can compare.

Hey there, A few games I can think of that might be worth checking out are Rift, Archeage, Skyforge, Archlord 2 and Echo of Soul.
  • stio89stio89 Member UncommonPosts: 85
Archeage has ships in it like Pirates of the burning sea. If you are really into ships, you could try World of Warships, Its world war 2 ships though. There is another naval game with ships from I think 18th/19th century that looks amazing, its called Naval Action, Its in closed beta atm, The only way to get in is by emailing the devs and asking if you can buy the beta access I think its 20 dollars or something. I'm just gonna wait until its out.

If you are like me and have been jumping from mmo to mmo for the past number of years, You should be open to try different genres of mmo, I now try all sorts of genres now, You'd be surprised you might find one you love, I'm currently playing one called Project Zomboid. It's an isometric view zombie survival game, but theres a big focus on building/crafting and jobs like fishing/farming/cooking etc. 2 years a go I wouldnt of even considered a game like that, now its one of my favourites :chuffed:

I'm not sure if you've considered a text based RPG game like Avalon: The Legend Lives. I know you said your sight isn't that great but we have many blind players who play and give loads of help in using screen readers to others so that wouldn't be a problem. There are several professions that you could be a part of that aren't PVP exclusive and you could enjoy making potions, runes, picking herbs and poisons, or even spend your time using the farming and labours skills to help your guild or city. City politics is also something you could be  part of without having to worry about the PVP aspect of the game. I could go on and on as to why this would work for you but perhaps going to www.avalon-rpg.com and reading more about it would help or you could just log in and get started. You'll find a very novice friendly atmosphere to get you started.

    Circumstances:

    1. Have multiple sclerosis with serious hand tremors at times

    2. Some loss of vision (small text difficult)

    3. Stress is a component of my disease so random squads are a problem

    4. I'm more finesse than wham-bam, more methodical than running around with my hair on fire

    5. Horrible at PvP for the above reasons

    Looking for a game that:

    1. Offers meaningful alternatives to continual PvE/PvP combat

    2. Has excellent, non-cartoonish or non-anime graphics

    3. Possesses rich, meaningful lore

    4. Has a good crafting/gathering/farming function

    5. Possesses a solid, player-driven economy uninfluenced by external gold/resource buying

    6. Preferably a mostly open-world/sandbox environment

    7. Game mechanics should lend themselves to mouse/keyboard macros and voice command (i.e., Tazti)

    8. A battle pet and mature, helpful player community are huge plusses

    Games I have tried:

    1. WoW -- played for a long time and did well with economy -- left because of changing player population and expansions

    2. SWtOR -- sucky economy and little to do but combat

    3. TSW -- bad economy (when I played) and the environment bummed me too much

    4. PWI -- totally P2W, found a good private server, but end game is all about PvP and crafting is meaningless

    5. GW -- played for a long time -- weak economy and little to do aside from combat

    6. LoTRO -- hated the player animations

    7. EVE -- played briefly -- there was no *me* in the game

    8. PoTBS -- great game theoretically -- ship fighting, crafting great, land-based fighting was too hard for me

    9. ESO -- weird economy and the fighting mechanic was difficult for me. Quit one month after game launch, may try again

    Bit more background:

    1. I'm 32, medically retired professional woman

    2. Other than my disabilities, I'm quite hardcore, often playing as much as 16 hours a day

    3. I'm very goal driven and will put in the time/effort when there's a meaningful goal

    4. My character(s) become an extension of me, so I hate dying in game

    5. I place greater value on politeness than on being first to the prize

    6. I know all the dirty words (some in multiple languages), but I'd rather not hear F*** in every sentence

I realize, given the current player/gaming environment, I may be asking for the moon, but I'm hoping someone can offer something I've overlooked.

    Thank you in advance!

    Play Project 1999 100%

It's the only game that even comes close to your criteria. I hope you don't care about graphics though lol.

To be honest there is no game out there that really fits your requirements fully that I know of and considering I have been looking for a game similiar to what you have described except for the combat system I doubt there is many. There are three games I can think of that I believe are close to what you are looking for. One is ESO which you have tried, the second is Archeage and the third is SWG. I haven't played the first two so I could be off but SWG kind of fits every requirement you asked for, I know people still play SWG with the SWG EMU in fact my old guild still does I could give you a link to their site if you were interested. I think your best bet may be archeage but like I said I haven't played it myself so I am not really sure.

Kind of offtopic but its sad how many people responded with so obviously not having read your post fully.

Hello again. A couple of previous respondents asked for an update on my experience with FFXIV.

I've been playing Final Fantasy: ARR for about a month. My Summoner is level 50, my Botanist and Fisher are 52, my Miner is 53. I've leveled all eight of my crafting professions to 50 (Weaver is 52, Carpenter is 51). Obviously, I spend the bulk of my time gathering and crafting, which is where I draw most pleasure.

Drawbacks are having to complete combat missions with my Summoner. While solo missions are easy peasy I'm indeed challenged by some of the dungeons. Even though I've been careful to study walk-thru's and have ensured that I'm very well geared, my physical limitations are such that I'm reluctant to join groups for the more advanced dungeons. As such, I'm probably a First Storm Sergeant forever and I may never get to play the new Heavensward expansion. This is the downside for me, but I can live with it I suppose.

On the upside, I'm doing quite well with the economic component to the game. As of this writing I've had several days where I've sold over 500K in merchandise, my Gil balance is comfortably fat and growing daily. I'm also obsessive about doing the daily GC crafting/supply & provisioning quests; so, I'm currently raking in more GC seals than I can spend (atm I have over 600 Ventures, which will keep my six Retainers in daily missions for some time).

In all, I'm enjoying FFXIV very much, I only wish there were alternatives to completing dungeons in order to advance in the game and unlock new territories.

I think there's not much more that can be said. I've hit on FFXIV, it's doable and fun, and I shall probably stick with it for many months or years.

Thank you again for all of your kind suggestions; they were most helpful and instructive.

Nice, I pretty much really enjoyed the crafting and mostly the same thing you do with the exception that those activities are my mainly solo alone time activities.  I really enjoy running dungeons and endgame content though and haven't really had much trouble with that kind of thing once past the initial learning curve, that said like you mention the combat mechanics in some of the later group dungeons are pretty bad due to the way dodging works.

That's the main reason why I left the game, that said I have read on the new content they have tweaked the dodging mechanics so the delay on dodging is less than on the older content so it could be if you can get past the original "endgame" content you might have an easier time with the newer stuff.  Not sure about all this though as I stopped playing quite awhile ago and this is all hearsay from their forums.

Dunno if this is still accurate but there was a forced 3ms delay on dodging and while they haven't changed this in the older content I was told in the later content they lowered this to 1ms.

Another game you might like is ESO, it's the game I am playing right now it's much fun the crafting and gathering is fun as well and you have more freedom to build characters to your liking, the dungeon are indeed hard but doable and they do not have the dodging mechanic of FF which I hated.  That's not to say you shouldn't dodge sometimes but it's pretty cool when on your sword n board tank and you block you can actually stun enemies and whatnot, anyways I digress suffice it to say if you ever get tired of FF take a look at ESO. It also has an interesting economy as there is no auction house but rather works via guild traders.

I would suggest The Secret World hands down.   Others to consider Final Fantasy 14 and Guild Wars 1 and/or 2.  If you like Star Wars; the old republic is good.  There are many games that I think you would enjoy.

RE: FFXIV: ARR ... I'm the OP btw :)

I decided to take a risk and started playing a Conjurer (healer). I'm now commencing my 4th day as such, am level-34, and have converted to White Mage, kind of a more advanced healer.

Doing this, with the intent of running dungeons was a huge gamble for me because I get really stressed when I consider others are relying on me, so much so that my hands shake terribly and I cannot click on skill buttons. Two things have helped me a lot.

    •  FFXIV provides training dungeons which can be done until you feel comfortable in your role

    •  I've created special macros on my mouse and never have to click the skill buttons

For the most part I've leveled this character just from doing dungeons ... AND I'm quite enjoying it. Moreover (and this is NOT meant as a boast), apparently -- who knew -- I'm good at it. I've received 67 commendations from party members in the past three days. This may not seem like a big deal to most, but gaming is a huge part of my existence and once again being considered viable is terribly reaffirming for me.

So, the upshot is I'm finding I can negotiate successfully all aspects of FFXIV after all, it just took some clever mouse macros and patience on my part. There's just a lot about FFXIV that works for me:

    •  Environment does not depress me like TSW and there are lots of things to do besides combat

    •  There's an open-world feeling to the game (it's not really, but it does have a huge feeling about it)

    •  Once you've completed the main story quest line it's unnecessary to do quests to level other characters

    •  For the most part, the community is friendly, helpful, and forgiving

    •  Game mechanics allow for multiple approaches to getting things done

    Here's a link to my character: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/character/11794522/

I appreciate all the recommendations very much, but for now I've found my home and I think it's time to bring this thread to a close.

    Cheers, everyone!
