World of Warships: Japanese Rising Sun Battle Flag to be Removed

Kotaku is reporting that the Japanese Imperial flag, or the Rising Sun, is being removed from World of Warships. It has been a source of controversy on the forums since closed beta. The flag will be replaced with the Japanese national banner.

Not surprising really.

 

It may well have caused problems in various asian countries, just as the swastika is outlawed in many european countries. Most games do not feature swastikas on their WWII combat vehicles or gear for that specific reason.

Adding to that that the swastika is not a symbol designed by Nazi's, it is a ancient symbol used thousands of years before the Nazi Party was created.

Players could also just not play that particular game if they are so politically correct and want to enforce this on the rest of the world. It is a part of history and trying to erase it from the history books will not make those deeds undone.

Trying to erase such symbols in (digital) media with those era's as subject is like denying it ever happened.

 

Plus symbols they 'love' can be experienced as highly offensive to other players too. Not everyone has fond memories when they see the US flag or the British (empire) flag or any other symbols they used on their war machinery.

Then I demand they remove all Soviet flags and stars from their products because Soviet Union's unprovoked invasion on my home country.

I would have let them keep the flags because I understand it's part of history, but if they start removing symbols of nations that have offended other nations then I expect them to do it equally to symbols of every nation.

The difference is the Nazi flag is illegal as you can be fined, arrested and jailed for in certain countries this flag is not.

I think it's ridiculous.  People are trying to ignore history when they do things like this.  It's better to remember it so it doesn't happen again.

Know what? Let's remove all references to Islam in games too. For that matter, let's remove all references and symbology related to all Abrahamic religions. But why stop there? Somebody's ancestors may have been hurt by Vikings, Visigoths, Gauls, Byzantines, Persians, Babylonians, or Carthaginians, so let's remove all those references and symbology as well, including their religions. 

Hell, let's just remove every single flag or symbol from all games, historical or otherwise, and replace them with plain-colored ones. After all, somebody might get their feelings hurt!

All characters will now be gender and race neutral as well, so as not to offend anybody of any race or gender.

This is nothing like a confederate flag flying over a government building. This is a game, these ships existed and the flag flew over them. No reason to remove them from the game, and honestly why stop at the flag? Why not the ships themselves? I almost never notice the flag but I notice all the Japanese ships and I remember why they existed. The flag is no more or less offensive then the ship itself...

My great grandfather may have lost friends to these very ships and then I blow them up and it is okay lol having the flag in the game is not the same as making a pro Imperial Japan statement lol having a tiger tank in WOT is not saying you wished Germany won the war this is not the same as naming towns and schools after rebel generals and celebrating them, this is not flying a rebel flag over an American one. This is silly...

If you have memories of japanese imperialism I can understand part of the sentiment. The problem is that almost all of those signing the petition has no memories of japanese imperialism and are offended because someome told them to be offended.

 

To make matters worse, if you are offended with japanese imperialism why are you playing a world war 2 game to begin with.

i thought the japanese navy still uses a current form of the rising sun flag anyways? keep it close to the original or current flag of what they currently use.

also, well we can't fly the chinese flag either in this game, cuz they killed like 5-15 million of their own people during the cultural revolution and i find that offensive.
