Star Citizen - get ready for GamesCom ! (Multi Crew ships in action)

ErillionErillion Member EpicPosts: 10,328

Location of the Gamescom Star Citizen event:

Friday, August 7, 2015
E-werk
Schanzenstraße 37
51063 Köln, Germany

http://www.pcinvasion.com/comiccon-brings-more-star-citizen-info-new-arena-commander-after-gamescom

"CIG are planning to show multiple ‘multicrew’ ships in action at GamesCom, and Arena Commander 2.0 will be released shortly after GamesCom concludes.

Arena Commander 2.0 will include a new, larger map for free flight testing to accommodate the larger multicrew ships. Chris Roberts says this is a game changer as they move them into the persistent universe part of the game.

Squadron 42, which is the single player game set in the Star Citizen universe, was described as the “entry point” to the game to learn the game mechanics. Roberts says that Squadron 42 is bigger than any Wing Commander title, mentioning that the script is currently around 670 pages long. He also claimed it will be more vivid and emotional that any games he’s done in the past. More details on Squadron 42 will be revealed at GamesCom next month."

Looking forward to finally test-fly my Constellation.

Have fun

From the last "10 for The Chairman":

we can expect two kinds of videos .. most likely at GamesCom.

    First: Multi Crew Ships

A bunch of people start in a Gold Horizon space station, go to the hangar, enter a cutlass, fly out there to the location of a discovered derelict Retaliator bomber. Some go outside on an EVA, cross over to the Retaliator, enter it, power it up. Both ships fly away.

Second  (which in part MAY include the first video): Zones

They plan to show of all kinds of zones and transitions between the zones. From the large scale map  (millions of kilometers, a fast ship would need 2.5 hours to cross if they are not using quantum drive or jump engines) to the smaller scale map (e.g. an asteroid field, a planet) to the local map (e.g. the area around a derelict ship, landing on a space station).

They plan to show all kinds of (multi crew) ships. Especially the Retaliator and Cutlass. Constellation is likely.

    Have fun

Nice can't wait till we some more!

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

There is also a good interview from GamersNexus that has some more details as well.

The biggest takeaways from the GamesCom demo, though, is the new 64-bit precision maps that their engineering department finally implemented into the engine. Go go Foundry 42 Frankfurt!

What we've been told so far about the demo: (note that this is of course subject to change until they actually show it at the event)

(Some of what was stated in a previous post below, what I'm looking forward to...)

The demo will be starting off at a station that is orbiting a gas giant. The planet is 182 km in diameter. (Our planet Jupiter is ~140 km, by comparison.) The planet has 4 moons that orbit around it. Traveling from one side of the map to the other side takes the 350R (the current fastest ship in the game) 2 and 1/2 hours at max speed, without using the quantum drive.

They're going to show off localized physics grids and the container system, moving from the station, to the ship (stated to be a Cutlass, currently), then do a zero-g move over to another multicrew ship (unknown, rumored to be a Retaliator) and going through the takeover/startup procedure on that ship, to show how it all works.

    Definitely excited.

I suspect you mean 182.000 km and  140.000 km.  (Jupiter radius:  69.911 km, diameter 139.822 km )

Those 64 bit Engine maps must be pretty HUGE !

Will be fun to know if you find by sheer luck and/or Eyeball Mark I sensors all kinds of zero-emission derelict ships that have drifted off the spacelanes  IF you are flying around and NOT use the quantum drive.

If having fun annoys you, i pity you.

Because - at the end of the day - that is why we play games in the first place.

Let him have his 'have fun'!   It's schtick.

And even though I disagree with him as to the prospects of the game,  Erillion is pretty unflaggingly polite in his defense of it.  More so than I'd probably manage.    For this he deserves brownie points.

And Erillion,  keep a sharp eye out at the convention if they try to pull a fast one.    ;)

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

    Will do.

I will try to have a few words with "da man"  himself    (but i guess, the other few hundred people in the CIG special event ;-) will try the same).

Personally i am interested in the plans for the crafting aspect of SC and the role of the non-combat professions and have a few questions to the team about that topic. I know that most PvP fans are not too keen w.r.t. to player crafting of essential items, but when i think back to SWG, where you really could became famous as one of the best crafters on a server ... THAT is what i am still looking for in a game.  Seems we will get more on health professions (kinda like a doctor or paramedic in SC) soon - when they introduce the "Hope" class hospital ship based on the 200 m Endeavor hull.

All those conventions in the US and Australia  (PAX, ComicCon etc.) are a bit too far for a casual trip. GamesCom is close enough to home to take a look ....

and MAN, its a HUGE convention. Close to 300.000 people in only a few days.

    Have fun

the full 64 bit precision conversion of the engine paid off BIG TIME:

In 10FTC the little info was dropped that there will be a 184,000 km diameter gas giant with several moons demonstrated.

So there, full scale planets now in and working. "For reference, Jupiter is about 140,000 km in diameter." someone wrote in the forums so that´s pretty amazing scale.

Yeah, I meant what you put, I was being a dolt and forgot to add the zeroes. It would have been more appropriate if I had done 140 Mm for megameter, but you understood anyway.

And I'm sure there will be plenty to find out there. I don't know if you check out the Dev Talk stuff they post on INN from time to time (when the dev's show up on the website chat and answer questions), but yesterday they were mentioning that the Procedural Generation tech they already have working will be used to generate things like asteroid fields and other random 'discovery' items, like derelicts.

Let's see if they solved the precision problems with the CryEngine and the localized physics volumes. I still don't believe they can pull off a person walking in a ship that is actually moving and piloted by another player in real time. If they do i would be really impressed.

    Looking forward to this.

I'm interested in seeing this working, obviously a lab-controlled demo isn't the quite the same as real world deployment but it should give a fair idea of what they're hoping to achieve. When I can play it at home it'll mean much more to me than watching them demo it.

Yeah, definitely. But, if you can get it working in the lab you've taken the first step from 'idea and theory' to 'working model'.

I wonder what sort of Vegas odds there would be on Derek Smart crashing the stage yelling and screaming for people to pay attention to him and that Chris Roberts is just a thief, and for everyone to play LoD before being pulled off stage by security?

    "Large word technology"

Arena Commander 2.0 maps are 8.796.093.022 km large

The old CryEngine allowed 8 ! km maps.

CIG currently shows the Large World / Multi Crew ship demo.

NOT a trailer ... thats a live demo with 10 players ... and it looks AWESOME !!!

    2000 spectators at the venue.

I would not say its hot, but two Hobbits passed by and threw a ring in here.

Best cosplayers get prices (Vanduul Glaives for the pair of pirates and the uniformed lady). Lots of Saitek hardware giveaways (lottery for members  in the audience).

They show pretty much that scene described in the old post.

Its not the Gold Horizon station but a much bigger rotating Crusader Industries station ... looks nice !

3 escort fighters (including a Hornet and two Gladius), one Cutlass with Marines

    They show quantum drive flying.

Marines get up, exit Cutlass, EVA over to Retaliator, open hatch

Marines enter Retaliator and power it up ... they man various stations ... cockpit, turrets etc.

    They navigate an asteroid field

The convoy is ambushed by Constellation ... dogfight ..

    Retaliator launches torpedoes

    Constellation killed

    Convoy heads back to station

Crew checks engineering station ... any battle damage ?  (LOL Retaliator too shot up to fly home ... ;-)

    Landing on station

    *** audience goes crazy ***

:-)  And they do it again ... they want to bring the Retaliator home ... Chris orders the Bad Ones to shoot the escort fighters, NOT the Retaliator this time ... once more with feeling

Crusader station ... feels like the "2001 Space Odysee" station .... :-)

one escort fighter jumped too far

they find the Retaliator with scanning

seen from an EVAing marine, the bomber is a sleek beauty

Retaliator has battle damage, big blast holes, one marine enters there, not the hatch

the magnetic boots of the marines  have a heavy thumbing feel and sound

Turret gunners have fun with asteroid field

Now they show the multi crew team in the Constellation .. she is tough, shrugs off lots of damage

    torpedo hits ... SPECTASTIC EXPLOSION

Retaliator makes it back home this time

And we see the full Crusader station now .... 4, no 5 rotating rings ...

    detailed landing and disembarking scenes

    Heroic music

    Capital ship flyover

Chris Roberts thanks everyone, especially all the volunteers.

    And now ... drinks !!

    Have fun

It's probably a bit easier managing 8M cubic km of absolutely nothing than it is to manage 8km sq of detailed terrain, but OK, clearly CIG have been tinkering with the CryEngine code a bit... image

GameStar news from GamesCom (in German , just watch the videos)

    * Chris Roberts interview

    * Gameplay video  (NOT the demo he shows live, this is the Arc Corp landing zone)

    Video only:

    http://www.gamestar.de/videos/gamescom-2015,105/star-citizen,84239.html

    Things shown:

    * customs area

    * ArcCorp plaza

    * medical facilities

    * G-Loc bar (including dance floor and manly dancing ;-)

    * Chubby Blast weapon shop (with nice demo of the information feature)

    * Casaba clothing shop (from outside)

    * Dumpers Depot scrap yard

    * Astro Armada ship dealer  (Murder and Mayhem as they demonstrate basic FPS features in there)

Second part of the video is the press version of the demo that we visitors of the SC event saw

(we saw more, the journalists did not see the Constellation attacking the convoy).

ROUGH TIMELINE for 2015  (Guestimate by Chris Roberts, time stamp 7th AUG 2015, take it with a grain of salt)

end of August 2015 Social Module

end of September 2015 FPS Module

end of October 2015 Multiplayer Crew (around Citizen Con)

followed by testing version of first episode of SQ 42 (or parts of that) (no clear date given by Chris Roberts..2015ish)

end of the year 2015 ... small part of Persistent Universe up for testing

end of 2016 ... Persistent Universe launch

    Great game play footage !

The character animations still look far from finished, but the content that was demonstrated is really impressive.
