It's official, "MMO" is a dirty word for developers as they all scramble to just be called "a game."

It's official, "MMO" is a dirty word for developers as they all scramble to just be called "a game."
That's because there has been an increasingly strong stigma associated with "MMO".
Yeah I know but some MMOish games can legtimatellly get away from using the term because they're not 100% there: Destiny for example.
ESO is about as traditional an MMO as has launched in the past 5 years. But it does sort of explain their reluctance to include a much-needed AH-like buy/sell system: obstinate determination to be the un-WOW.
There are limits where newspeak and rebranding just become feeble and silly.

Maybe when devs first started making mmo's they were inspired. Now that everythings been done they want to move away from the traditional. Explains why traditional healers role is being removed. Plus it's less work.

There is no agreed definition; lots of definitions but no universal benchmark.
Customer A has their idea of what an mmo is; company delivers mmo; does not match vision; unhappy customer; may post bad karma. Worst case: class action law suit.
Gets worse: games change. Is WoW an mmo? Sure? People sitting in garrisons all alone playing what essentially is a "moba"?
Easy solution: company says our game is our game; it is unique; this is what we offer call it what you want.
And it isn't just "mmos" - take a look at first person shooters. Like what Destiny is right - or then again ....
I just got this game. Launcher works fine, game downloaded in a few hours. Levelling is slow, but havent found a grind at all, just a feel of the old fashioned take your time levelling, which I'm enjoying.

Well yeah every game is unique but we've been calling this type of game an MMORPG (as in the name of this site) for many years... and that's still what ESO is.
Maybe I'm just in a bitchy mood but sometimes like today my tolerance level for PR departments massaging messages is very low. Everyone does it and it's done more and more every day.
If there is any confusion about what an MMORPG is, it's deliberately manufactured confusion for PR and marketting purposes. At one point, every game that could barely fit wanted to be thought as one but I gues new focus group results are in and now they're trending the other way. And sites like this one lean toward an inclusive spin while game studios all want theirs to be a special snowflake and no longer an MMO even if it walks and talks like one.
We're so used to digesting the carefully crafted and worded statements that we're accepting the BS and half truths as normal truths now... and getting very confused in the process. I'm sure Mark Twain and Vonnegut both are rolling over in their graves.

Of course it is Marketing manipulation.
People associate certain features, payment models, development timelines, etc. with the concept of "MMORPG".
Therefore if a developer wants to do something that breaks the "rules", they need to distance themselves from the rules. Naturally, the easiest dodge is to say: "Well, you see, the MMORPG rules don't apply to our game, because our game isn't actually a MMORPG !"

You felt the need to post that you will not watch the clip because the cookies bug you on your cell?
We have a winner..
Won't be touching the game until the walls between PS4 and PC are opened.
It makes no sense to stretch a game across three factions and three consoles. None of them being able to fully interact with each other.

i bought eso couple of days ago..
Their launcher is complete apeshit.. i cant even play the game..
Launcher is terribad slow... .0000004 download speed.. then i got errors..
How can this even be possible for a game thats how old?
That sounds like a problem with your connection. Launcher is fine for me.
