Diablo 3: New Diablo Expansion or a Whole New Game?

A new advertisement has cropped up on the Blizzard site for an "unannounced project" that in and of itself seems like nothing too exciting. However, the addition of "A passion for games with a deep understanding of the Diablo franchise" is the clue. Whether this is an expansion to Diablo III or if it's an entirely new entry into the series, Diablo IV, remains to be seen, though Blizzcon could see a big announcement for fans of the legendary IP.

There is no way it would be an MMO. Blizzard knows where the wind is blowing, otherwise they would not have cancelled Titan. I am pretty sure it will be either an expansion or some smaller game like Hearthstone themed off the Diablo universe.
Diablo 3 sold 30 million copies; there is no way there won't be another expansion at some point.
I dont think they would need to be so vague on hiring someone to work on an expansion, more than likely its been in the works for some time
I always hoped for a persistent world in D3, maybe there is some type of transition available

Likewise, i dont think another version of diablo IV would be all that great, nothing new is adding to this game genre and there are plenty out there thesedays.
Expansion. They originally said Diablo 3 was going to have three X-pacs, and we've only had one so far.
Of course plans change... who knows when they decide that the expansions are no longer a good plan.
Still, my money's on the expansion. Or maybe a Diablo spin-off in a different genre.

Sounds like maybe back to a Diablo prequel.

Think they had plans a few years ago for a Diablo prequel that was scrapped..maybe time to go in that direction again.
This got me thinking about Diablo 3 again. I may re-download it on my new PC and give it a shot during times I am bored. xD The game has changed a bit since I last played.
Back on topic, though.. Would I buy yet another Diablo 3 expansion? Likely.. I tend to buy every expansion I can for games I enjoy, so why not? lol!
This game would have another four to six years before they make a new Diablo imo.
The only reason I bring that up is because I recall devs speaking about how this game is meant to last as long or longer than D2 before they thought about making a new one, IF they made a new one.
They also spoke on their philosophy behind it too & I also recall them talking about, at least, two expansions. Unfortunately in the thirty minutes i just spent trying to find these discussions/comments I came up empty handed. Will edit if I find them.

What if they are making an open world rpg based on the Diablo franchise? Blizzard has been getting out of their usual routine with Hearthstone, HotS and Overwatch. There's a good chance it won't be a mmo since they cancelled Titan and WoW's population has dropped to it's lowest point for a long time.
Of course, at the same time, the decline of WoW could be a pathway for a Diablo mmo to arise. They cancelled Titan partly because they couldn't really find a way to make it fun. They could have been uninspired by the setting and want to return to an IP they know and love. The lore of the Diablo universe is also a bit more open ended than WoW was considering the story is more generalized and less specific character driven compared to WarCraft. There are staple NPCs in Diablo, but there's not a central figure like Arthas, Thrall, Sylvanas, etc. Diablo is more about the war between Heaven and Hell and the effects of the war on the world.
It's probably just an expansion though.
Speaking of Dreaming... How about a new Fallout: Tristan game
Takes place in the world of Fallout but has Diablo assets... could love a game like that.

its very likely an expansion. They did say there would be 2-3 expansions for d3. D3 is actually getting better and better with every patch. I will probably play again for a bit when the new patch launches later this month.

WoW seemed a lot stronger back when they canceled Titan.
If they wanted to release a diablo MMO in 2020 now is the time to start working on it. Then again if they want to release Diablo 4 by 2025 now is the time to get working on it too. I don't doubt there is another D3 expansion coming but that should be well under way, perhaps they want to boost the team to get it out faster?
