Sounds like a fun sweeps, bet I doubt it's legal in my state of NY, USA, since you can't make contests that 'require' a purchase to enter here. It's just not legal... Sigh :(

The prize is basically $50k if you choose the island you'll probably get a rock in the middle of the ocean lol I'm thinking something along the lines of Rockall. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockall

It looks like it's a real island valued up to $50,000 or cash prize equivalent.

I'm tempted to tell my wife to play all day and just blow stuff up. My 2 year old can watch himself, right?

It is a real life island (not guaranteed to be inhabitable, or reachable by anything but boat) OR $50,000.00 (they haven't picked which island yet, but a island that's only $50,000.00 value is probably a big rock somewhere (also it may be an in a lake or river, not necessarily the ocean) Still that would be pretty cool.

It's probably an Island inhabited by hundred's of Komodo Dragons, "Welcome to you're island" As boat speeds away once you are off it.

There is also the logistics of reaching said island, constructing anything of worth on the island, etc.

... plus paying the land/property/etc taxes to whatever country thinks it owns the waters it's in :). After a while the "lucky winner" will take a $50K bank loan just to pay someone to take the island off his or her hands :).

Not necessarily. While you have to buy the game to be able to play, you don't have to "buy into" the actual contest. And the rules state it's open everywhere - it didn't even look to exclude Rhode Island!

"Location of Island to be determined by Sponsor. [...] Sponsor does not guarantee the Island to be inhabitable, developed or reachable by any means other than a boat." So, you get a piece of rock somewhere that is cheap to buy because nobody wants to go there. You probably won't even visit it unless you're rich enough to travel around the world. Even if you can, it will take you at least two weeks to get there because you'll have to charter a boat from the nearest civilized location.

If I won, I would definitely name my island "NowWhat".

well, no one said "you will win an island with an airport on it!" ... seems fair to me, islands usualy ARE reached via boat

The Island's value is up to 50 000$ in cash and the location is determined by sponsor.

At 50 000$ they'll probably be able to buy a rock on some lake somewhere.

I like that it's an actual competition rather than a random drawing.

@lechugh I think that means that it is illegal to start said contest in your state. Typically, this wouldn't prevent you from participating, so long as the contest was started in another state where it was legal in the first place.
  • UhwopUhwop Member UncommonPosts: 1,791
$50k can buy an island the size of Delaware if that island has no natural resources, like fresh water; which is very likely exactly what the contest winner would end up with if they were actually not intelligent enough to take the cash. Islands really aren't that expensive, and most people don't understand how cheap land really is. Land is cheap, developing it isn't.

The picture on the site title page that leads to this article has Sponsored on it. I hope MMORPG.com is not giving the game away there? :)
