Didn't realize PFO was released already. According to MMORPG, Status:Final (rel 2014). Explains much.

Yep... when you give a game designer an IP, and that game designer turns around and says he can't simply design a game that corresponds to the IP; this is it where that ends up.

another really really crap game designer.. why are there so many of them?

PFO and Ryan can quietly exit the building now.

It's released by our standards. Taking monthly sub, no wipes.

What would you consider a reset? Which are more important and how many to meet the standard of a true reset? * New CEO * New Vision * New Engine * New Developer / Publisher * New Monetization Model * Server Wipe Before Relaunch

Played: E&B, SWG, Eve, WoW, COH, WAR, POTBS, AOC, LOTRO, AUTO.A, AO, FE, TR, WWII, MWO, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, NWO, WoP, RUST, LIF, SOA, MORTAL, DFUW, AA, TF, PFO, ALBO, and many many others....

$150 to translate an already launched game and set up an aggressive cash shop....smells like Trion to me.

Such a lost opportunity. A shame someone doesn't pick up the IP & do it justice.

PFO had been on my radar for a while.  It really sounded like an interesting game, before they made it.

I am embarrassed to say I kickstarted this atrocity and it was so bad i couldn't even play for my free month or whatever. One of the only kickstarters I really regret.
  • sakersaker Member RarePosts: 1,458
Another in the long list of games I had such hopes for. Such a hugely developed P-N-P game, so much they could easily call on for story characters and lore...

Look, I understand the interest in sandbox and pvp that seems to be new now, but the Pathfinder IP is one that is served better by plenty of themepark in its design. There is nothing wrong with making this a Sandpark with set-piece content but also places in the world for players to build their holdings and towns. There is just too much fantastic theme-type content available to paizo and pathfinder to ignore it entirely and completely jump on the pvp sandbox bandwagon that so dominates today's MMOs in development.

'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.

I think D&D 5e is the most played tabletop RPG now. The only stats we have to determine it is the number of active games on Roll20 and sales, of which 5e is ahead in both. The only reason people played Pathfinder is because it was an evolution of the 3.5e ruleset and they really didn't like 4e.

This was an easy call my experience with Ryan is he is egotistical and a poor business person. Everything I mean everything he touches turns to crap look back at his failed attempt to take over the Living Cities property from Wizards he managed to run that into the ground in record time. This is one more example of his talent. Bravo. Luckily I did not fall for his BS this time around.

While I was occasionally vocal about the "crowdforging" nonsense, I was really hoping they pulled it off.  The potential it had was exactly what I am looking for in an MMO.

I feel bad for those that supported the idea of this game. Hopefully it doesn't influence feature attitudes toward supporting other ideas of gaming just because of this group of....inexperienced individuals.

While PF online was a flop, I shudder at what a publisher would do with it. Please god, not another trinity based themepark. Anything but another trinity based theme park.

It's not so much about sandbox/themepark with PFO, but the low production quality of it. The models, textures, and animations are subpar compared to other MMOs. It's not a knock against their devs, just an observation. If it had higher quality standards, there's no doubt more people would've taken interest in it. This is what plagues indie developers and most kickstarter/crowdfunded projects.

When they asked players to fund their tech demo, I knew then they did not have the belief in their own game. Now that lack shows through.

Taking a PvE IP and turning into a PvP centric game is kind of silly I think.

Never heard of PFO before, but those video snippets didn't look that impressive.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

This is the only standard to have, otherwise F2P MMOs would be saying they were in Beta until the 22nd Century. As Bill said we need a new hit, this sort of thing just puts a question mark over the genre. (The quote box is a bit weird I am seeing all the formatting commands from the quoted post)

That is because Pathfinder Online's "Marketing Genius" of a former CEO, Ryan Dancey did not believe the game needed marketing, could not afford marketing or did not want to be bothered with marketing the game.

He was so confident that players would want to play this game he concocted the idea of staggering entry to 2,000 players a month.  By this time PFO was supposed to have 18,000 players, they perhaps only missed their goal by 97%.

I hope Paizo realizes that if they are "Resetting the Course", a substantial graphics upgrade along with massive amounts of work on the game play, UI and new player experience are included.

For every one gamer that says they don't care about graphics, there are 10,000 that do.

Played: E&B, SWG, Eve, WoW, COH, WAR, POTBS, AOC, LOTRO, AUTO.A, AO, FE, TR, WWII, MWO, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, NWO, WoP, RUST, LIF, SOA, MORTAL, DFUW, AA, TF, PFO, ALBO, and many many others....
