Why would they care about you?

MMO's are largely about community. Otherwise, they'd just MOSPG which sounds more like a intestinal disorder than a enjoyable experience.  Having a close knit community is a strong community, just like having a close knit group of friends is a strong group of friends. This is what really makes an MMO work, and succeed.

Nobody lets just anyone into their group of friends. If someone doesn't put back into the group, they are just dead weight so why would you bother bringing them along.  It's like an unwritten rule that every member has to contribute to the group, and the cancerous members (the ones that do nothing but complain and demand from everyone else without contributing) are cut free and discarded.

So what do YOU do to be a valid part of your MMO community? What is the benefit that YOU bring to the group? If your MMORPG became a invite only club, would you be invited?

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.

They love the stories I bring from being on this website.  They can't believe people actually think the way some do on here.

...Do you solely exist to troll?

Because that comment is literally summarized as "I make lulz at you."

I think he might be referring to a different thread with an individual who expects everything possible for free.

Then perhaps he should keep it in there instead of using a different thread to taunt about them.

I play interesting, convincing characters.  I can also write and direct interesting stories as a game master in the old sense.  That's what I do, but that's seldom what anyone else is looking for.

Lets not get carried away here. MMO's should not be all about one social aspect like this. They should be loose enough so that players who want to solo can solo, or players who aren't that heavily oriented to participating in social activity like a bee in a hive can play the looser interaction with others.

    Once upon a time....

I can offer myself as a reasonable companion, guide, and assistant.  My favorite activity is RP with friends, and we usually do this in quest groups or out exploring.  I group exclusively with friends.  I play a decent healer in friendly non speed-run groups.  I don't PUG and I never touch an automated grouping tool. My friends know I can play and tolerate that I'm not BIS geared.  We're playing for fun.  Nothing more.

What I cannot offer is tolerating noise, gold begging, dungeon run-through begging, and people who are too good (or lazy) to make the effort of playing their own character in order to progress.

On the flip side, group leaders who only group with BIS geared and enchanted super-toons, don't need to bother asking me to group with them.  They won't like me, the feeling is mutual,  and we're not playing for the same reasons.

Would I get invited to a modern MMORPG with my having this attitude?  Not likely.

And thats fine with me.  I'll find something else to play.

They shouldn't care about me.  I don't  care about them anymore.  I don't  want to be tied to their goals their expectations or their pace. I want do the things i enjoy at my pace.  Likely that would interfere with your enjoyment.
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

I bring the sheer awesoness of my pvp. I'm kinda like a mix between Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. I make others around me better while sliding the dagger into my enemies.

So yeah I'd be invited, but I MIGHT not accept.

You will be surprised lol... I'm sure everyone for at least once in their life let in a terrible friend. If you haven't that means you haven't existed in this world for long enough yet ;)

And just like real world, mmos are not as able to be exclusive as you think. Trolls will always find ways to troll their way in so they can troll lol. Manipulative people will manipulate, and no one can be 100% immune (unless you don't associate with people at all and live in the mountains, that is)

During the time I used to play MMORPG games, people were actually dependent on a group in order to progress and succeed. This is why people cared about eachother. Not so much anymore. If games disallow people to bring something to offer to each individual player from one player, then you probably won't find a reason why people care anymore.

    I've seen the following happen:
    • People grow together after years of leveling together and develop this brother in arms relationship (especially when pvp comes your way).
    • People having different responsibilities that bring something to the clan: A recruiting officer (was a good friend of mine), a pvp general to handle the wars (that was me, i was appointed to organize the gank squad parties), a raid event organizer (this was also me), a clan leader (handles the politics between other clans), political officers that make decisions in place of leader absence, the clan crafters, the clan accountants that handles who gets what in the clan, the list goes on and on. Everyone did their part, and most had friendly relationships with eachother on top of their "something they brought to the table".
    • I've seen people pay for others accounts due to keeping them playing (for both/either/or friendship and need of their godly buffs to level).
    • I've actually had the pleasure of my clan craft me a full end game set (worth about $1000 on the market) when my current gear (worse than what my clan crafted me) was wrongfully deleted by the game company.
    • I've seen people actually get married after meeting in the game and have great relationships.
    • I've seen online friends offer eachother rl jobs and places to live during hard times to keep the gameplay going.

So to answer this post, I would say it highly depends on what the game actually allows players to do, and the type of players/community the game has. There is also a moment to recognize that when you achieve something (in game or in life), it holds much greater value if you have someone to share it with.
This right here, if the game is based around group mechanics that are needed to take on content then it is your class that matters, and if you actually help your group or not.

Oh sure, people usually give everyone a chance, but if the person ends up being a royal pain, or even just an unappreciated part of the group, then it won't take long before they are excluded and not part of the group.
