Is there a game like this around?
I remember Shattered Galaxy from fifteen years ago or so. It was an interesting concept, where you lead squads of units in big RTS battles. The units leveled up and evolved.
It always surprised me that that mechanic never went anywhere. It seemed perfectly suited to MMORTS gameplay, where you jumped into a fight with your squad, and fought alongside other peoples squads. To my knowledge, nobody else has taken the idea. SG was a very rudimentary game. The squads all contained the same unit and when you 'died' you respawned with a new squad. Lots of room for improvement. I was wondering if the Dawn Of War franchise wasn't heading in that direction. They had commander units that seemed perfectly suited, and DoW2 seemed to have limited their units down to squads. A perfect matchup to me would seem to be a blend of SG/DoW2, and Kohan, another very interesting RTS where you built squads by combining different units. By having a variety of different units to build with (tanky, support, ranged, fast, etc.) you could use different strategies. The MOBA craze is already halfway there. Instead of having a single hero or champion, you would control your squad.
