Why do people go bonkers on forums?

I have had this happen to me and seen it happen a lot and I was wondering:
Why does the breakdown occur when someone posts a comment or thread about "topic xyz" and other poster(s) reply back either about the topic plus negative comments about the poster or in most cases 100% negative comments berating the poster? like why do we create a reply about the actual poster negatively? i wonder what sets people off to where they take a forum about a hobby and feel the need to reply about another poster directly negatively? I've even gone about creating a signature warning to hopefully it wards off people who like to reply about posters.
