My guess is that it will break even or be mildly profitable. I think the stigma against WOW, Fantasy and MMO's by the general public will hurt it especially at the theaters. TV is changing that slowly but surely (one hit isn't enough).
i hope it is, Blizzard has become too comfortable on top spot for so long, they need a major bamboo up their ass to wake up and start improving WoW.
The paradox being that they are still raking in the dough. Why change?
The little I've seen does not impress me. WoW has rich lore and history with some great stories that could make good movies. None of this is centered around the player. This is the pitfall I see happening with the tiny bit of video footage I've seen.
Looking at all the profits from the superhero movies is making them want to jump in. There's also a 'not do it the way it is' sort of vibe in hollywood, that might kill it.
If they manage to capture the spirit of the game it will be very successful. Hopefully hollywood politics won't kill it.

The stories told in Warcraft I, II, II, and WoW are interesting and fun, for games. But they are no Lord of the Rings. Combined with using real actors instead of staying with the CGI videos and voice actors that everyone is used too... I just don't think its going to do that well.
You might be right, the WoW comics were pretty pathetic and comics still are way easier than movies. Then again are the Archlord comics actually not that bad and the Suikoden comics are even good so it might just be that WoW hired in some lousy comic writers.
As for a movie, computer games do tend to make lousy movies and even the D&D movies suck. I think partly is the problem that Hollywood (and Uwe) don't really take stuff like this seriously and don't really bother to research the stuff. They just make some kind of joke with little of the original feeling.
With the right director it could work. The British Discworld movies are good even if they are based on books.
But I can just see another lousy movie here, possibly with Jeremy Irons as the bad guy.
While I do remain positive, I honestly think this could flop badly. I just think WoW is not what it used to be 6-8 years ago. Feel like it is too little too late.
So basically what you are saying is, 6-8 years ago, WoW fanaticism would have ensured a successful movie even if it were a 2 hour slide show on Ogre poo. "OMG, WoW on the big screen!" "Will there be a collector's edition? I'd gladly pay triple the price just to get a signed autograph from the poo!"
What if WoW had 24 million subscribers today... would you suggest the movie would be better because the subscriber was higher than it was 6-8 years ago?
A movie can sell lots of tickets and still be terrible... a movie can also sell very few tickets and be fantastic.
The artwork looks way like it may be taking itself too seriously to be Warcraft. Warcraft has a serious plot, but a humourous, "over-glamorized" undertone.
Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile
You guys wanting doom are all nuts. "I want the movie to flop because I hate Blizzard". Do you all realize how childish that sounds?
Yeah, its pretty hilarious.
And the "reasons" they give are just as bad.
People saying "oh, this will flop because WoW isnt popular anymore" is ridiculous.
If the movie does badly it will have absolutely nothing to do with WoW, the CGI or Blizzard.
Agreed. It is inane. I mean, people watched Fern Gully 3D Avatar where "unobtanium" was actually a thing. If anything should have flopped it was that terrible movie.
Well....given the track record of game-to-movie adaptations were pretty bad. I have pretty low expectation for Warcraft movie. Maybe I will enjoy it more then.
I am not going to comment more then : Hollywood did say they are putting there own little twist in this one. That was the only condition why they accepted to do it.
I guess the movie will be ok. Not good, not bad, not worth all the hassle and waiting for. As to the CGI, it all depends on their quality. Let's just hope they aren't as bad as in Hobbit 2, making the whole movie look like a Playstation 2 game.
Do you know how pathetic your comment is? What do Blizzard have to wake up from, oh yeah making billions of dollars lol.
Why the fuck would any company want to wake up from that?
Look i know you blame blizzard for stealing years of your life because you were addicted to there pixels but don't let it cloud your judgement. The film wont flop even its crap, the fan base wont allow it. Let's say 80% of there fan base go and see the film they still win.
Instead of wasting your brain matter wishing blizzard would die you would feel a lot better getting a girlfriend or a dog do walk on the park.
fivoroth Lol of course they expect there fanbase to watch it, come on your not that naive are you. If none fans watch it then even better but don't be in any doubt that they expect fans to watch the film.
we still dont know , i think the movie will be "ok" , what has been showed is a bit "meh" , but the scenary and the "spell effects" are really well done , but that was a given knowing blizzard CGI.
Not playing WoW since BC. But am intrested in the upcoming movie. and after I have seen it will I make judgement if it was worth it.
Also mentioned in the articel if this would spark a maybe for a new Conan movie. Wel there have been snippets of talk since 2012 around the net about Arnie returning to his role of Conan in "Legend of Conan"
I think that visually it will be great, good effects, great battles and all that doo-doo that simpleminded watchers want from an action movie.
For my persnoal taste I bet that there is too much to tell, and not enough time. Dialogues will be shallow and full of cliches (and this is not necessarily the script's fault, but just lack of time). We will be lucky if, to watchers who are unfamiliar with the franchise, the story will not have major plot-holes and make any kind of sense.
I think that this kind of franchise is more suited to television shows.
