UT99 is miles the best pvp game of all time.It offers every single aspect that pvp SHOULD have and i have yet to see another game that does the same.
Quake is a step behind because of it's layout and jump pads make for easier distance fighting.I guess a lot depends on the aged argument of what setup is better powerups versus no powerups.I am a purest i do not want powerups in my game ever.
zaxis,guess/prediction,cover,escape,map control, ways to fool your opponent, sounds are very important, weapons for every situation, weapon control as important as map control, ability to shoot or do damage around corners.
One of the main problems i have seen in ALL pvp games are the map designs,it seems MOST do not understand how to make a great map.Example the map considered to be the best in UT99 was Deck16 but imo it is not even a good map as it is a one dimensional wide open map and the lower area has VERY little playability and not enough routes for movement. Most maps have a major flaw in it's design, mapping is so important ,separating quality pvp from crap pvp.
I absolutely lol@CS being a good pvp game,it does almost everything wrong in it's design and mapping.CS became popular back in the day because it was the easiest game to cheat in,likely the most cheated game i have seen released in gaming.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
@Wizardy, there is a huge difference between CS Source, CS 1.6 and CS 1.6: Warcraft 3 MOD. If you've played it you would understand. Also as you can see all of my fav PvP games I can overcome multiple enemies by myself, which is the first thing I'm looking at any PvP game.
I dislike any games that force me to depend heavily on other skilled players like WOW/GW2/DOTA2/LOL or that I must bring numbers to feel safe like EVE.
If I could just go back a decade ago I would still be playing Star Craft 1. It had the perfect battle net, no hacking and a great seasonal ladder, but of course Blizzard abandoned it cuz they needed $ cuz you can't get more $ from a B2P product.
I think games like H1Z1, DayZ or Ark (the one I'm currently playing). I've played almost all games out there and I see more action in Ark in comparatively same number of hours played. Give it a shot if you are bored.. It's not that expensive!
i guess it depends on what type of pvp game, i think in terms of FPS'ers Planetside 2 is probably a contender, although it does have a few P2W issues where you can buy better weapons, both for infantry and for vehicles, that give you a significant advantage over others, unless they have them too, then there is Eve Online, but, there the PVP is reliant on you not being solo, so really its a group based PVP game, although battles can risk devolving to mass brawls involving hundreds of players. Then there are the fantasy based games that have pvp, contenders there range from GW2 to ESO etc. where really its not a case of best but personal preference. As for moba's who knows, i find them universally boring.
Dont you know you cant use the phrase P2W(unless it is used in exact detail of each words definiton ).. There is no such thing and the police will be here to correct you..................
Guys, as I mentioned about, if you love old-school shooters like Quake and UT. The new UT has a playable alpha build you can download I just fell in love with. I haven't had this much fun in a minute. I'm gonna pop a stream on in about 15 if anyone wants to see it being played.
Please come check out my stream. All the love is appreciated!
Sadly..the pc world lacks fighters. I was hoping MKX would be a huge hit. It was for a little...but the server stability was garbage. I know there's Thunder Rising, a pc focused fighter, or whatever it's called but that was just mediocre at best.

Yep MKX underperformed, didn't even come close to MK9.
Making a successful fighter is *hard* if devs decide they want to make a casual fighting game it's easier, but to make a tournament competitive fighter is very hard.
Balance is a bitch, putting in similar attack/block/counter frames while keeping characters unique and animations smooth - good luck with that.
Here's to hoping SF5 does well on their pc port.

Just call them credit card battles........ There is def such a thing, Acheage is one of them, so is uncharted waters, and 99% of all MMOs. I can only think of 2 off the top of my head that arent, Ryzom, and Istria.

How can a non-competitive pure pve game be a credit card battle?
That never made any sense to me.
So another guild beat the dragon first or cleared a dungeon first, so what?
When did AA become a non-competeitve pure pve game .... noted ...
And his opinion doesnt have to make sense to you just as yours dont make sense to others..

From MMO-RPGs I must say that World of Warcraft still holds the first place for me. Though I haven't played it for ages since the -reasons-, it still holds the fondest memories of player versus player combat (both in 10-10 battlegrounds, or as simple as 1vs1 duels). Those who played back in the first expansion, the Burning Crusade may very well remember how awesome everything used to be.
Also, from browser-based games I must say that at the moment, one MMO-RTS game called AD2460 really holds the top spot. It's an subscription-based, fairly new strategic game that is comparable to many in the same genre, such as Travian. Unlike others in this genre, the game ISN'T pay2win! The game may be slow to start but will pick the pace after the first week or so.
Planetside 2, an MMO-FPS is one of the best F2P (although it may be considered P2W in some cases) games I've played. It has great graphics, it's scifi and futuristic.

may be just learn to play :-)
gw2 spvp is so fun!
MAGA
Why? Because it's my opinion.
I don't want, nor need, to sell the game in order to explain why.

Destiny is fun too
Huge open zones
Ability to jump to where the action is.
Can change classes to suit my needs at the time(Sniper when low population, Heavy when lots of groups running around to join)
Also its not out yet but when it is I can easily see it being one of the best PvP games, For Honor.
I self identify as a monkey.
