Since it seems to be the thing to say, goign to try and list 35 MMOs (no particular order)
Lotro (top 10) Asherons call (top 10?) WoW (top 3) SWG (should make top 5) Vanguard (robbed) AoC Warhammer Everquest EQ2 (top 3 or 5) Runes of Magic Eve (top 5) Swotor GW2 (top 5 or 10) GW 1 (not an MMO but might need it to make 35) Star Trek Online Rift (top 10) ARK (does it count as an MMO? and is it released yet?) UO (top 5 or 10) DaoC (top 10) Aoin (top 5) Secret World D&D online Fallen Earth Wildstar FFXIV (top 10, never played it) Runescape Pirates of the Burning Sea ESO (top 10) DC universe Lineage II City of Heroes (does it count) Atlantica Allods Tabula Rasa
I had to dig for those last 5, and I still only got to 34 and I counted a few there that are questionable and a few that no longer exist.
Oh dear some of the most innovative MMOs have only made the last five. So I will predict the top ten, all big sellers, big population. Big numbers means they must be the best.
I did not see one innovative MMO on that list just a lot of copycats IMO. Everyone has differing opinions so give me an example of what you thought was innovative about them.
Looking forward to the next list.
BTW that will be really hard on Vanguard and Shadowbane as they were some of the biggest copycats made.
"I did not see one innovative MMO on that list"
Just mentioning one thing each:
Vanguard - Crafting quests.
A Tale in the Desert - Unique MMO, I don't think there is anything else like it.
Fallen Earth - Survival crafting MMOs started here.
Wizard 101 - Started a genre of MMOs aimed at kids.
Age of Conan - The player as hero and guild sieges.
Path of Exile - How to do a cash shop not based on Las Vegas ethos like all the others are now.
Planeside - A three team MMO shooter, a MMOFPS. Got a few out now, not when it launched.
A collection of some of the most innovative MMOs out there.

If I missed any obvious ones add them.
this is why you cant make this list.
you have 5 games that are top 5, which is fine, but then you have 8 more games that should be in the top 10...?.....how does that work? there are only 5 spots left.....i guess you have lot of ties? that's kind of cheating.

I didnt proof it I just made a list them threw some ranks in there. But I did go back and look I had 12 in the top 10 and one of those was a question mark. If there is a tie for 10th it works.....
But if you want to be technical then I would leave off ESO and Asherons Call
Then you have a top 10 that looks like this....
1 EQ2 2 SWG 3 Wow 4 Eve 5 UO 6 GW 2 7 Aoin (yeah I called it top 5 but probably not) 8 Daoc 9 Lotro 10 Rift 10A FFXIV
The differences are marginal and ranking will be totally based on personal preference and bias. I never played either Aoin nor FFXIV but I recognize their popularity. Also the old school games like SWG, UO and DAOC get a little over rated due to nostalgia and bad memories. But for timing purposes and what it did and when it did it SWG is my number two, especially in comparison to what has come after it. 4,5,6 are basically interchangeable in order. As are 8,9,10. If I played Aoin I would probably rank it lower than I have but it is wildly popular and held a decent player base. Similar to Secret World (havent played that either) I am sure some people would call that a top 5 game. But I think people see it as a Funcom product and the opposite of AoC and probably rate it too high by comparison. It gets hard to rate games you havent played, it is also difficult comparing games from nearly 20 years ago to what we have no as well.
Oh and I left Archeage of the original list so I found almost 35 released MMOs worth mentioning.
I love POE but its a stretch to class it as an MMO
Everything is an MMO these days, it started to get out of hand some time ago. It's the reason why so many (gamers/ignorant data collectors) believe this genre is in healthy shape and also the reason these lists are becoming less and less interesting and relevant.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
It doesn't matter; the current obsession to lump 'em all in the MMO bin is greater than common sense or even how a studio classifies their game.

If WoW finishes in top 3, this article is void.
EQ1, DaoC, UO are genre defining games that should be top 3.
Genre defining is not the same as greatest
Gotta agree. I haven't played WOW since TBC and have absolutely no desire to return, but if WOW is not number one then it will be because MMORPG.com wishes to generate traffic via controversy, rather than a genuine countdown.
Horizons/Istaria should have been at the bottom of the list. Disappointed it won't make the list, probably one of the top 5 innovative MMO's ever
One could argue that innovation without proper execution would preclude a game from making the list, but then you could argue against Shadowbane or Vanguard on that basis.

EQ should be #1, it is the ONE that started the modern 3d MMO.
3D had nothing to do with it, it was the name Sony that had everything to do with EQs rise. Another attributing factor is no PvP but without Sony I don't think it would have been the smash hit it was.
I personally hated EQ because of the PvE focus. I think PvE focus'd MMOs are garbage.
Millions of other people enjoy PVE focused games. Must be a EVE player.
I hate EVE.
I know millions of players love PvE focus'd games, I do too. Here is the thing the PvE games I like, have a definite ending.
PvE centric MMOs do not build stable lasting communities. PvE is best when it is contested thru PvP in an MMO.
So EQ1 did not have a lasing community....please. PvP games are flash in the pan till the next shiny PvP game comes out.
The PvP is like that because the game is PvE centric, PvP is merely an afterthought in most cases. PvE games don't hold a players attention for very long.
I see nothing wrong with MMOs being balanced around PvP. It isn't like the NPC's are raging against players because they keep dying to fast. It isn't like PvE games are balanced anyways, they aren't even close. You always have FOTM.
Not sure what PvP-lite is to you, I'm under the assumption you're one them instanced PvPers who can't handle unexpected games of "tag".
The problem is non instanced PvP (open world) is not supposed to be fair or balanced. Fine tuning balance for instanced 1v1, 2v2, 4v4 etc is fine.
However in openworld PvP where I could be solo up against 5+ enemies, do developers have to balance classes so they can take on 5 enemies solo?
If people can take on 5 enemies solo in OW PvP they are either playing on OP class or they've beaten a group of not very skilled players.
If it's an OP class (I think there should be OP classes in OW PvP) some PvPers complain and it gets nerfed.
The problem is people wanting balance in an environment where there shouldn't be any. It's also an environment where it's more about luck than player skill and as a PvPer myself I don't like that.
I don't mind losing XP, gear if it was a fair fight.
So weird how people defend Vanguard, it was shit, it died almost immediately, it caused the developer that originally made it to break up.... it was terrible and the art style was just bland, it looked like the engine it was built on.
